Hmm. I guess these would be nice to fix? But these continuity errors never bothered me. I suppose as long as we have the original, error-filled ones I wouldn't care if he fixed them.

The Throne Room ceiling is still missing from this shot.

If you up the gamma on that shot, you will notice that the space isn't black for a missing ceiling. It has texture. There was something there so nothing is missing.

I feel that if he is going to tinker and "make them better" he needs to fix the continuity errors as they have more impact than R2 hiding behind a rock, a scene I never heard anyone complain about. That shot is just ridiculous.

That's not even the ceiling, that's some closer, overhanging thing. A walkway or something, perhaps? Note how the metal pole on the left is cut off, because that thing is in front of it. It's just that its corner and the corner of the room happen to line up.

Looks ok to me

I have a question about the "Luke's ghost" scene. "Somewhere" I have seen a screenshot from a similar or the same angle, but Luke was running up the staircase. I think it could be from the same scene. Does anybody know what I'm talking about ? images.google.com is not very helpful :-(

The mother of all vfx errors to me, and something I'm assuming they still haven't fixed for the blu-ray (unless they have???), is during the Battle of Endor.

When the Death Star II fires off its superlaser for the second time, we cut to it blowing up a ship as rebel fighters fly past the camera. The camera is rolling clockwise (or counterclockwise, I don't remember) relative to the forest moon below.

The only problem is that the fleet of big ships in the background rolls in unison with the camera!!!

Whoops!

This was obviously something they forgot to think about back in '83 when they were doing all of that complicated optical compositing.

Hi, just signed up here after a long time lurking - consider me another fan for whom these new Blu-Ray changes represent the proverbial donkey back breaking straw...

Anyway - I believe this is the still you are refering to...

I sit corrected but it says something about the composition of the shot if you have to crank the levels up to blinding to spot detail in what looks like a jet black triangle.

Am I the only person who thinks this bleached out version of the throne room looks more Star Warsy than the way it was presented in the actual film?

I know the Emperor is evil and all but you think he could afford to turn the lights on :-D

I'm kinda with Bingo on this. I think that shot looks really great because everything isn't all washed out. It's a lot more visually interesting.

I definitely agree with Bingowings. This way is much better than as is in the actual film. This is much more Star Wars-y. One of the reasons ROTJ doesn't work is that the picture seems blander than the other films; nothing is really vivid and sticks out to the eye. This is along the lines of why I like a white Hoth in ESB, as opposed to a duller blue; I love whatever sticks out to the eye without being overly obnoxious. Darker picture makes dull film...

Count me on the opposite then; I prefer the moody, dark blues and greys of the Thrown Room. It's always been among my favorite sets in the film. Really, it's the forest battle that tends to bore me.

Oh, of course. Wasn't trying to defend Georgie. I was saying it would be nice if he fixed these, but I would still want an unfixed theatrical version

Well, perhaps not as bright as the screenshot there, but at least bright enough that you can see the details in the set. Otherwise they might as well be fighting in a room with four matte-black walls. Certainly you want to keep the mood and the gravity of the situation.

This COULD be the shot. I remember it from a slightly different angle, but it could be just mixed memories. But thanks for confirming I'm not absolutely crazy yet :-)

Something that always bothered about ANH, how the music sometimes doesn't match the images, or rather a certain note starts a few seconds earlier than it should. I blame this on the editing rather than Williams, some examples:

The shot of Tantive beneath the Star Destroyer's belly.

Mos Eisley's introduction (the aerial shot of the city from the cliff).

So does the blu-ray still feature the same crappy firecracker effect when Red Leader crashes into the Death Star in ANH?

That's pretty insane - never noticed that before. You would have thought that, at the very least, as soon as they reached the point in that process where they had to add one shadow they would have realised they had to consider where the light source was going to be for the entire scene...

Off topic, but the way those Gungan musicians movie has always really annoyed me - they look awful.

ESB: The recycled ROTJ-shot of Vader arriving on the Death Star. You can still see the wall/ceiling of the stage.

OH, IT'S *THIS* SABER AGAIN

Turned green in 2004. Corrected in 2011, that's good. But this is a lightsaber shot that needs completely remaking anyway due to the way it wobbles. There was no pole in the hilt for this shot -- because Luke switches it off without a jump cut -- so it was hand-drawn without a reference. The beam is also too thin comared to other shots in the scene.
IN NEED OF FIXING SINCE: 1977?
IGNORED CHANCES TO FIX: Oh boy

How ugly this shot may look to some, I just want to point it out that it was remade for the 1997 SE. The saber along with the remote and chess elements was digitally re-composited. The saber itself look quite different than the original, the blade was extended for example.

The original effect was quite impressive back in the day due to using so many elements in the same shot.

timdiggerm said:

I never really thought about that, msycamore. You've got the blade, the remote and all the little chess men. That's a lot!

Don't forget the remote-laser in this later shot:

^does that laser hit what I think it does. ;)

Even if the volume of elements aren't that impressive, (some shots in the asteroid secuence in ESB used over 40 different elements I think) it was quite impressive in how well integrated it was with the live action in those Falcon scenes.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
