What Didn't You Like About ROTS?

Author
Time

Because there’s actually someone on this planet (maybe) who ranks ROTS ahead of every other SW movie other than the original (yes, even ESB).

Please be specific. “Everything” is a reasonable yet counterproductive answer.

The score aside from Anakin’ Dark Deeds and a couple of other original pieces…I don’t even like the lightsaber duels anymore.

“Everything” is the correct answer. I will break it down a bit, however:

  1. The characters.
    Terribly written and awfully acted. Mace Windu, Yoda and to a lesser extent Obi-Wan are a bunch of dull monks. Grievous is silly. Palpatine is way over the top. Anakin is less awful to watch than he was in the last movie, but his transformation is handled very poorly. Also: Darth Vader is now a child-killer, yet his mentor and his wife still kinda like the guy.

  2. The story.
    Most of the time it feels like George had a checklist of stuff that needs to happen in the PT and only got around to using it by the time he started making the third film. Having said that, the PT doesn’t even tie in to the OT very well and introduces a lot of continuity errors. I also hate how every surviving character (except for Chewbacca) ends up in the exact same place where they are found 20 years later.

  3. The little things.
    They had the same actor who portrayed Palpatine in ROTJ. They could have take advantage of that and with some very mild make-up work he could really become a 20 years younger version of the same character. Instead they chose to glue an awful Halloween mask on his face.
    The two lightsaber duels lack any suspence whatsoever. I never found out why the Yoda vs. Palpatine duel was even in the film.

Mainly, like the other prequels, it sucked all the excitement and adventure out of Star Wars. George forbid a Star Wars movie be any fun for anyone.

Also, the entire movie is a bad Sega Dreamcast cutscene.

People like it because “it’s dark.” I kinda get that. “Dark” movies can be good, but this one is just so needlessly dark and that just makes the whole thing dull.

Grievous is stupid.

Many other things I’m too lazy to type.

It is, however, my favorite prequel. This is because things actually occasionally happen in this one. Nothing happens in TPM, nothing happens in AOTC.

That said, I’ll still probably never watch it again. The only prequel I own is AOTC because my sister got it for me when I was younger and I rewatch it when I can’t sleep hoping it’ll bore me to sleep but, alas, it never works as I spend the whole time angrily pointing out the innumerable flaws.

It’s got the worst dialogue out of any of them.

Author
Time

Some of the dialogue is just shocking, especially Anakin
“My powers have doubled since the last time we met”
Ah you were Attack +33 but now I see you have +55 and Agility bonus…

“You will try”
Is that even a sentence?

“If you’re not with me, then you’re my enemy!”
ooh i’m soo scared.
I mean compare that with
“If you will not fight then you will meet your destiny”

Palpatine is overdone, the makeup is awful and plasticky, not to mention… POWER!!!

The final battle is so long and drawn out and it all comes down to “I have the higher ground”, they’ve been battling for what seems like hours and Obi Wan gains an advantage by jumping up a bit?

Other than that I find it fairly enjoyable…

Anakin: You are so…beautiful.
Padme: It’s only because I’m so in love.
Anakin: No. No, it’s because I’m so in love with you.
Padme: Then love has blinded you?
Anakin: Well…that’s not exactly what I meant.
Padme: But it’s probably true.

Yep

The Vader nooo

It’s my favorite of the prequels and I think on par with ROTJ as a whole, but it’s got the most cringeworthy scene in the saga.

Oh god, I was thinking of six or seven different lines when I made that post but I’d forgotten that one. A lot of people say AOTC is the worst for dialogue because of the sand thing, but ROTS has it beat in terms of sheer volume.

“What have I done?”

Two seconds later…

“I pledge myself to your teachings.”

Also, my absolute favorite to bring up, the Chewie/Yoda romance.

OT Yoda “missed not” everyone. Especially another OT character that was in the PT for two hot seconds (and for no reason) and never met Yoda in the OT.

The ultimate test for that movie was having it on in the background and constantly finding myself laughing at the dialogue, god it’s awful! I’m not gonna write a massive essay over this “swagmasta” simply because it’s not even worth my time to prove that a bad movie is bad, there’s so much wrong with it I wouldn’t even know where to start.

So the story isn’t quite as stupid as the previous film but the main side villain should have been Dooku. Grievous serves no point beyond adding another toy to the range.
Selling the war as a Jedi plot makes more sense if you keep your main Jedi plotter alive for most of the film.
If Steve Grievous had to exist not making him Maul (or Jar-Jar) seems petty at this stage.
Lucas is just getting his design team to create something that looks cool for kids but doesn’t actually do anything as a character.
Padme does very little in this film. Her dying of a broken heart schtick was very lazy and contradicts the OT.
It’s the PT so the usual observations of people speaking the strange space language of expositionese still hold.
Iain has been the only thing worth watching the PT up until now and then they go and scribble over his face and tell him to do a really bad impersonation of the Emperor from ROTJ
Threepio does very little in this film. Wiping his memory at this point seems pointless and hardly something Artoo (his friend) would laugh about.
Why are all the Jedi killed by Clones and not Vader?
Since 1977 I’ve wanted to see Darth Vader in a cyborg suit fight and kill Jedi with his red lightsaber. Not some pouty kid in a bath robe with lizard eyes (for reasons) kill a handful of people mostly off screen before entering into a glow stick party with Ewan McGregor.
Why does Coruscant still look shining and pretty. Surely with all those capital ships falling out the atmosphere now would be a good time to see the capital at least partially damaged?
Vader should look less advanced than he does in ANH not more and he should have been played by a big man in the cyborg suit not Hayden in high heels FFS and the final indignity of the NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The worst thing about all of ROTS is how Lucas attempted to tie everything into a neat bow to lead into the original trilogy, almost as though Revenge of the Sith ended just a few minutes before A New Hope began. It is pretty insulting to think that the audience wouldn’t be able to understand that maybe Padme died sometime between the two trilogies when Leia was young, but she had to die on screen so dummies wouldn’t wonder why Natalie Portman wasn’t in the OT. Same thing with Obi Wan chatting with Qui Gon’s ghost because apparently everyone needed to know how Obi Wan learned to be a ghost. I could go on and on.

-Grievous as a cartoon CGI character (well, at least his death is decent);
-“Another happy landing” :’(
-Ridiclous lines during battles (“UNLIMITED POWER”, but also every single one in the confrontation between Yoda and Palpatine). Though they’re probably meant to be like that, homaging the classics from the 50s, they’re totally out of place in Star Wars;
-Anakin’s sudden turn to the darkside and his decision to turn against the Jedi;
-“We can rule the galaxy…”, because he never expressed such a lust for power before;
-Padme’s death, because, though poetic, retcons Leia’s statement in ROTJ;
-NOOOOOOO, and I don’t care if it was a tribute to Frankenstein!

Let’s not forget the Jedi Purge lasting all of a couple hours.

I personally never expected – or wanted – all the Jedi to be wiped out with the close of the PT. I fully expected Ep. III to end with the extermination of the Jedi Council members and the razing of the Jedi Temple – and perhaps with the young Jedi children (I refuse to use the Y-word) taken into custody to be reprogrammed into dark Jedi – but nothing more than that; I figured most of the other Jedi would perish off-screen in the years between the two trilogies in various skirmishes with Vader and other Imperial agents.

But noooo, Lucas had to have the Jedi go out in the lamest way conceivable – shot in the back by CG Temueras.

STRANGE

I wouldn’t have been able to comprehend that loose end though. I’d never be able to stop thinking about why Yarael Poof wasn’t in A New Hope.

FTFY

The Jedi are completely inept in the PT and it’s magnified in ROTS. They can’t sense Palpatine. They can’t tell Anakin is into some bad shit. They confront Palpatine four to one, and three die within two seconds. All the others are killed by fricking clones.

It’s so embarassing.
