What 30th Anniversary?

I've been thinking, if Lucasfilm are indeed going to re-release all 6 films in an uber-box set in May (as part of the 30th Anniversary), wouldn't we have heard about it by now?

From past experience, they always tend to announce news like that several months in advance right?

It would be logical based on previous patterns that there would be something said by now, and that the 30th year anniversary would be exploited more. But, I hadn't heard anything yet either.

Aren't the new stamps part of the 30th anniversary celebration? To be honest, even if there were ads on tv, I wouldn't even notice them. I DVR everything I watch these days. If I happen to be fast forwarding through a commercial slow enough and it looks interesting, I'll stop. If the ad is at the beginning of the commercial break or end, then I'll notice it. Otherwise, I don't really see any ads.

I don't get a newspaper or anything else at home either and I don't read TFN that much anymore. So unless they start advertising the 30th on giant billboards, I won't really notice it. That doesn't really bother me though. I still like the original movies, but Star Wars just doesn't have the same weight in my life anymore.

My feeling has always been that IF there is a new set it would be announced near or DURING Celebration IV. So although it is looking a bit unlikely at this point i say wait until CIV until we declare it dead.

It is true though that if new interviews with cast and crew and new docs were being done that we for sure would have heard about it by now. When the 2004 DVD set was being made we heard rumblings as far back as January of that year. So whatever we get it will port most of the extras over from before. Being that it is the 30th anniversary and the whole vintage thing is being milked to high heaven I am guessing that new extras will be OT deleted scenes and a vintage doc or two--and just maybe a better transfer of the OOT. All the films should be getting new transfers anyway--TPM's old transfer looks awful, AOTC could be improved, and even the OT-SE had all those huge colouring problems and audio errors. So we'll see.

If George Lucas thinks the 1977 release was half-finished, then why would he celebrate the 30th anniversary of a rough cut?

For the 30th anniversary, its been awfully quiet. I'm starting to think that the so called "archve" boxset isn't going to happen. Maybe they've decided that they've re-released Star Wars too many times, with a new repackaged set every year since '04. The Post Office with their stamp set seems to be the only big thing thats come out so far...

Are 30th anniveraries supposed to be loud? The real bang should have been the 25th anniversary of SW, but all we got for that was bad romance and clones.

I don't recall where I read it, but Sansweet will be conspicuously absent at some other larger conventions also, presumably to avoid being asked about this again.

A good ole stamp collection definitely outshines any DVD collection. Depending on where you place it in relation to an open window during a sunny day.

I seriously cannot wait for those stamps. Me and my friends are all dressing up as Star Wars characters and we are going to camp out in line in front of the Post Office the night before. We are even going to see if we can't get ourselves a vintage Anthony Daniels leaning board so we can take naps while waiting the vast long line that is sure to circle the Post Offices of America on that day. It is going to be like Revenge of the Sith all over again, only with stamps.

Over the weekend I watched my TPM dvd on a 4:3 tv with s-video and was suprised by how good I thought it looked. Then I reminded myself it was an anamorphic disc and therefore being downscaled in order to fit the screen. On my computer at full rez, no, the transfer doesn't hold up very well and its flaws become very obvious, but even the worst anamorphic transfers look pretty good on the tv and this is why I've been spoiled by them. A few months back I picked up Conan: The Complete Quest even though I noticed Conan the Destroyer was 4:3 letterbox. Let's face it, there's not exactly an outcry for that one like there is for Star Wars. Anyway, while taking it for a spin I was almost transported back to '97 and the days of watching the widescreen SE vhs. The only other letterbox discs I've seen off the top of my head are the old releases of Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma! and South Pacific, Artisan's first release of Frank Herbert's Dune, Universal's first release of the Dune movie, Fox's first release of Planet of the Apes and Michael Collins.

Is George Lucas's ego really such that he can't even swallow his pride for one split-second and just remaster the things? It's the 30th anniversary and yet LFL is determined to sell everything except that which we want the most from them.

Maybe the 'letterboxes' are a bit of a jab at the folks who want a proper release of the OOT?

it only took Lowry Digital a month to restore a Star Wars film to digital goodness... why can't they cut us all some slack and just have some of the OUT remastered? Is it that hard!? I doubt it's harder than stamp making.

Well, it looks like all of the years of marketing are finally taking their toll and Lucasfilm want to scale back a bit so as not crash and burn. Obviously, they don't want to sell a restored OOT, but it looks like, with the "saga" over, they've run out of things to market. Sure, the T.V. series and the endless toys and tie-ins and whatnot, but it looks like the core of it all is just burned out. I'm not saying that the franchise is dead or anything, just that the public would appear to have had enough of it for the time being.
