Westworld - 2016 tv series

Westworld is based on the 1973 film of the same name (written and directed by Michael Crichton - starring Yul Brynner & James Brolin, and to a lesser extent its 1976 sequel, Futureworld. There also was a short lived ‘Beyond Westworld’ TV series in 1980 - yet I digress)…

The premise… (from imdb)

The story takes place in Westworld - a fictional, technologically advanced Wild-West-themed amusement park populated by android “hosts”. The park caters to high-paying guests who may indulge their wildest fantasies within the park without fear of retaliation from the hosts (who are prevented by their programming from harming humans)

The Westworld theme park, run by the Delos corporation, offers its guests the opportunity to experience the Wild West in an expansive tract of open, arid land that includes the frontier town of Sweetwater. The town and land are inhabited by “hosts”: androids with advanced programming. The hosts follow a predefined set of intertwining narratives and have the ability to deviate from these narratives based on interactions they have with guests.

The hosts repeat their narrative anew each day — having had their memories of the previous day erased — until they are re-purposed or stowed away for use in other narratives. For guest safety, hosts are unable to harm any lifeform; this allows guests nearly unlimited freedom to engage without retribution in any activity they choose with the hosts, including sex and simulated murder. Staff situated in vast underground facilities oversee the park, develop new narratives, and perform repairs on hosts as necessary.

Needless to say - things aren’t quite what they seem…

A stunning show - like HBO’s Game Of Thrones it has that ability to look like a feature film, somehow absorbing you into it’s epic world - with an intriguing plot, layered characters, breathtaking cinematography & direction - having a fairly unique style, and sublime choices of music by Ramin Djawadi - of Battlestar Galactica, Person Of Interest and GOT.

A great cast helps too - with the likes of Evan Rachel Wood, Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris, James Marsden, Jimmi Simpson, Shannon Woodward & Luke Hemsworth - and a large supporting cast, giving some strong performances and bringing that something ‘extra’ to the series.

And beautifully put together by the Jonathan Nolan from the likes of Person Of Interest, Interstellar, The Dark Knight and DK Rises - and Lisa Joy, of Burn Notice and Pushing Up Daisies.

Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality…?

Tis’ a really enjoyable watch, one of those show where you want to watch what happens next week right now, and has random thoughts popping into your head about it during the week (that may just be me, though 😉)

Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here?
And say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

“Westworld” the film was groundbreaking for its time. “Westworld” the show is spectacular.

Don’t do drugs, unless you’re with me.

‘Alt Shift X’ - the man who does the superb ‘clear and concise’ Game Of Thrones explanation videos, and the occasional film, is now doing the same for Westworld too…

^ Well worth a watch, as well as for insights and pick-ups on content we may miss (or I miss, anyway 😉)

So many things being turned on their heads - so many possibilities, all beautifully done.

SPOILERS for S2xE04…

Did not see the new girl being the MIB’s daughter, nor guessing Bernard would execute Order 66 😉 Poor Jim too.

^I sort of had the thought that that might be the case, and then I think there was some editing early on in this episode that kinda confirmed it for me before the actual reveal. Fun development.

SPOILERS for S2xE04…

Forgot to mention I’m very happy Felix and Sylvester are still alive (for now…); some great chemistry and humour in there 😃

Really enjoying the music used so far this season too (just like the quality used last season!) - some if it can be found on here:-

and the Season 1 Soundtrack to Westworld is well worth a listen too.

(I hope Ramin gets to work on that Season 5 soundtrack for Person Of Interest soon, though that ship has likely sailed…)

I just marathoned the first season and haven’t decided if I should dive into season 2 or wait until it’s over so I can marathon that.

The production quality on this show is some of the best I’ve seen. Beautiful cinematography as you mentioned and stunning landscapes. The writing is spot-on also. Being a coder, I’m not rolling my eyes over tech talk like I usually am in sci-fi. They discuss builds and QA and other stuff that sounds very familiar 😃

I also love the contrast of the polished interior sets with their sophisticated, yet minimal technology held up against the raw, wide-open wilderness of the park.

Throw in some good plot twists along with HBO’s reliable V-N-AC-AL rating and we have a winner.

I adore so many of the “old-timey” covers of songs, particularly the Radiohead ones. Exit Music in the S1 finale was perfect, and the Vitamin String Quartet version of Motion Picture Soundtrack used in that one Maeve scene was great, too. And, of course, the version of Paint it Black in the first (?) episode was gorgeous.

It’s a great metaphor for the blurring of realty with fiction.

My CrossFit coach recommended it and she hasnt steered my wrong yet. Now with this write-up and discussion, it looks like something I need to look into. To be honest, not sure why it’s not been on my radar. It certainly seems like something I’d dig. Better give it a look.

.

Just gave the linked trailer a look. Jeffrey Wright and Ed Harris are two of my favorites. A definite plus.

😃 Very nicely done, it was.

SPOILERS for S2xE05…

Shogun World looks fantastic, and well explained by Sizemore 😉 - yet how do they control the danger of bows and arrows swords and pikes etc for when the Park is running ‘normally’ for the Guests?

Wow. Bringing him back was always a possibility - yet that was very nicely done. Poor Maeve - she finally found what she’s looking for and then… that. Also enjoyed that Teddy may be have been ‘fixed’ a little too well. The opening scene too - 💫

So much occurring, and all of it so immersive.

SPOILERS for S2xE07…

Great to see Anthony Hopkins returning - and really moving the story on somewhat too. Some quality explanations - really set it up for the final 3 episodes of the season… (which has flown by) Seems we may get a bit more of Ghost Nation too…

SPOILERS for S2xE08…

Wow - what a beautiful episode, a character-driven story and it’s focus over the time at the park, his interactions, the transitions, the play on emotions, and a superb performance from Zahn McClarnon as Akecheta. The piano arrangement of Heart Shaped Box for part of Akecheta’s journey was quality too. Well worth a re-watch, that.

Finally finished season 2.

…meh. Felt like the show kinda went too far up its own ass this time around. I don’t think the fragmented timeline/“puzzle” nature of the story was warranted this season at all beyond the writers trying to show off how smart they are.

I’ll probably give season 3 a shot, but I don’t think it’s a surprise that this season hemmoraged viewers like it did.

I also finally finished the season, but with a different reaction. While I had some issues with the finale, on the whole I thought the second season was better than the first (which I loved). I’m now fully willing to call this my favorite show on TV.

Very excited to see where it goes next.
