We have to buy this set atleast to preserve it for the next generation of fans — Page 2

I'm buying this DVD for selfish reasons.

I'm tired of watching my VHS, and my Laserdisc isn't the best of quality. Since these DVDs are being made from the LD master tapes and not the Laserdiscs themselves, this is going to be good quality.

I had no idea what the hell "anamorphic" was until this event, and had I bought the DVDs with out knowning, I would have NEVER known.

Bottom line: I want these. I have no guarentee that a better release will be out and I'm willing to settle for this quality. If a better version comes along, hells yeah I'll be buying it.

And none of us have seen the final product. We are all making judgment calls on half our info.

IJ is right - until we see this thing, all our "subpar" vs. "best yet" rhetoric is so much hot air. I hope the cynics will be pleasantly surprised with an image that's better than they expect. But that shouldn't mean not campaigning for a new HD scan.

I'm still demanding that Star Wars get the proper treatment it so rightly deserves, but I'm tired of holding out. Sure this DVD release is no filet minion, but I'm hungry and am willing to have a little "snack" because Lord knows when dinner is coming...

I'm buying this DVD and I'm happy. Not ecstatic, but happy. I'm picturing a great release in the future. A nice shinny silver box complete with all three unaltered movies, original artwork, and a bonus material featuring making ofs, behind the scenes, all the deleted footage, old interviews, and a tribute to George Lucas (because, obviously he'll be dead).

That is my dream. This DVD set coming out in September? Well, it's the stuffed Teddy Bear I'm hugging while I dream of greater things.

Do you think the OOT will be available in the '07 box set? IF I buy the Sepetember discs, and it becomes availabe next year, I will be super pissed! I already own the '04 set, and I am not happy about having to buy those crappy transfers just to get the ones I want.

May I send the George Lucas tribute DVD back to Lucasfilm with a polite note when I buy this set? It doesn't exactly fit my vision of my perfect Star Wars boxset, and we all know good old George watching down from heaven would be proud of me sticking true to my vision.

No I don't think that the '07 will have the OOT on it. In fact, I guarentee it.

And no I don't think that a Lucas tribute is what I want on my DVD extra disk. I just said that to make a point that I won't be seeing this beloved box set until he is dead, ergo the tribute. (not like I'd ever watch that segment anyway.)

No way will the OUT make the '07 set. IF it ever comes again, it'll be way down the line, probably on an HD format, which will make this the only official SD DVD release of the OUT ever.

My problem is that I'm not made out of money. If I had known the Hayden Christenson thing in Jedi before purchasing the 2004 DVDs I would have never bought them and would have no problem getting this release. I can't justify getting that same travesty a second time.

I'll wait for the Blue-ray versions. :\

I'm hearing rumors that

a) Lucas took out the ROTJ Anakin floating head for the 2004 disk

and

b) Hayden has been digitally inserted and dubbed into Shaw's unmasking scene. (possibly for a 2007 release)

I only heard this through my cousin and the grape vine. Personally, I don't care either way. I'm getting the originals and am for the most part, pleased.

And as much as I hate the idea of Lucas replacing Shaw with Hayden, I am very curious as to how it would look. Not that I would ever accept the altered scene, but it would be neat to see what it would look and sound like, see how creeped out I would be with the change, and then shrug my shoulders and go "Huh, that was kind of weird. Whatever. *tosses out disk*"

Could Hayden be put in age make-up and pull off a non-creepy, heart breaking line of "Now, go my son. Leave me."? I actually want Lucas to do this so I can go, "Wow, huh. Yea...uh, no. Shaw was way better."

I heard that to about totally replacing Shaw. Well we will find out next year in those inevitable Archive Editions

I guess I'll just be hearing about it, then, because I sure as hell am not going to be seeing it.

I would be curious too, but George Lucas has made me hate the Special Editions by trying to erase the existence of the original trilogy. I would have loved the special editions had he not begun doing this. As it is now, I cannot even bring myself to watch the 2004 DVDs I purchased. They just sit on my shelf, ignored. And now I'll have to buy a second set because of that creep? I'm not going to do it. It's depressing.

I hate to play the tired old "well I heard from a friend who heard from a guy who knows a guy" card, but I could have sworn that Lucas himself stated that the "great unmasking" would never be subject to a Hayden replacement.

Of course, that man's word means fuck all these days, but I'm just sayin'.

...crap, maybe I should go try and find some sources on this one...
For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

Just a thought - he might have been referring to Shaw on the Death Star,

JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Aye, that's what I was referring to, in response to Jenny's comments. I just can't for the life of me find anything online to back this up.

Lucas may have well said that the unmasking scene will never be altered, but I don't know why he would say that. He already insulted Shaw by replacing him during the end scene. What difference would it make if he replaced him in the unmasking scene too? He already crossed the line. What's stopping him from just going all the way?

While I agree with the OP on the fact that we need to preserve the OOT, and think he's absolutely right, it just seems out of the question to buy another set. I don't have the money to spend just to preserve the OOT. If I had the money, I'd do it in a second, but I don't, and I think that's the case with a lot of us.

Isn't it Lucas' or Fox' job to preserve the OOT the way they were originally? Why should all fans invest into this preservation project? I sure as hell don't feel responsible to the degree that I 'have' to buy a 2nd set of the 2004 SE just to obtain the OOT in sub-standard, below-par quality that even George himself wouldn't stick his THX quality mark on?

Remember the Episode 1 VHS-release?
According to Lucas at the time, the DVD format had it's quality issues and he didn't want to release it on DVD but instead wait until a better, higher quality format would come along.
But something changed his mind. Some 6-12 mounths later Episode I finally did see a DVD release.

With this in mind I'd like to say: Don't buy the september DVD release! No matter how nuch you'd like to own the OOT on DVD!

Sales figures and disapponted or even angree reactions of fans from all over the world, sendign messages and mail to Lucasfilm Ltd., should give him enough feedback as to why fans didn't buy this september DVD release. He cannot deny it. He KNOWS!
