Watching in order 1-6 is screwing up the original SW for newcomers! — Page 4

I watched ROTS on the weekend (first time on DVD, fourth time in total), and I must say, I hated a great deal of it. I was in 7th heaven the first two times I was watching it, but that's because I'm a Star Wars fan, and all that I had been waiting for since the age of 7 had been fulfilled. All I could think after seeing it for the fourth time is that I can't wait to rewrite it...

No, I read your comment CO. It's just your conclusion here is fallacious:

My point is that your nostalgia is what's making it #3. Nostalgia doesn't automatically mean you love it unconditionally. just that because of your childhood memories, you give it more love than it probably deserves. Nothing really WRONG with it, but it helps to understand that up front so there's a proper frame to your argument. The nostalgia is also why you refuse to believe there was ALWAYS this divide amongst film fans and even Star Wars fans more specifically, and it's deeper than simply "Ewoks = Jar Jar" or whatever the line is that you're drawing. There were people back then who HATED ROTJ and ESB after Star Wars came out. The difference is a) you didn't really seek those people out and b) there wasn't, because of lack of internet, as far reaching a segment of the community for you to easily read about. You think it was nicer mostly because you didn't KNOW about those who hated just as people now hate the Prequels and Computer Animation and all things post models and opticals. And along with the growth of the internet has come the gift of massive overstatement. It's one thing to recognize there are some screwed up elements in all the movies, and some really screwed up stuff in the Special Editions. It's another to call it "spitting in the face" as if it carries that much weight. But that sort of overstatement isn't just accepted, it's EXPECTED.

CO Answers:

Again, I have to disagree. When I say #3, it isn't my #3 favorite movie of all-time, it is #3 in the OT, and the last time I checked, that is dead last. If you asked me in 1983 what my top 5 movies were of all-time, I would have said: #1 Star Wars, #2 Return of the Jedi, #3 Superman II, #4 Wargames, #5 Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. Out of all 5 of them, the only one that hasn't changed on that list is the original Star Wars. My top 5 favorite movies of all-time presently would be: 1. Star Wars, 2. Empire Strikes Back, 3. Field of Dreams, 4. Hoosiers 5. Back to the Future, cause I can watch them over and over, so again I don't know where you keep getting this nostalgia thing?

As for people hating ROTJ, as I said earlier, I am sure there were people that didn't like ROTJ, and even ESB when they came out, just look at the drop in box office numbers after the original Star Wars in 1977. And your right, the internet does exasperate the level of both sides, positive or negative.

But there was a level of Hatred toward TPM I have never seen toward any movie that was so anticipated by an already fan base. Sure have movies bombed before, yes, but you can attribute alot of TPM problems to the hype, cause people were expecting the second coming. Sure people had grown up, and realized that they didn't love Star Wars as much as they did as kids. But it is, in my opinion, such a bad movie compared to the other Star Wars movies, and alot of people feel that. Now many people would argue and say AOTC is worse, but that is another debate.

My whole point is in 1998, Star Wars between the fans was alot more civil than it is today, and there two reasons why:

1. The Prequels to many are terrible. I said before TPM is average, AOTC is better, and ROTS is pretty good. That is 3 shots for Lucas to finally get a movie that I liked, that is not a good record. There are many fans that love the prequels, and there are many fans that despise them, think they ruin the myth of Star Wars, and many people, even though they may have not liked ROTJ, didn't think it ruined the series. Star Wars, before the prequels, was never mocked by the fans, it was mocked by the people who DIDN'T like it!

2. The SE, (Greedo Shooting First, Hayden in ROTJ as a Ghost) alienated all the fans that didn't like the prequels even more. Whether it is fair or not, the refusal to put the O-OT on DVD as made many fans who grew up with the series frustrated and angry. Say, you hate the prequels, and don't recognize them, but everytime you watch ROTJ, you have to see Hayden's mug at the end.

If there were no prequels, would they be debating today how good or bad ROTJ is, sure they do that with every movie, but the prequels have brought out a level of hatred that, to me personaly, has seriously hurt the saga. You know there will always have two factions of fans, most younger, but not all who love the prequels, and mostly older, but not all who hate the prequels. I don't think George ever intended that to happen.

I have to say that I love the OT, hate the PT, and enjoy some of the EU, accepting some of it into my personal canon.

I saw a survey one time that asked which was the official version of a movie:
A) The Theatrical Cut
B) The Director's Cut
C) The Longest Version
D) Version I like the most

The result was an honest D. EU to me is like a buffet. I take what I like and leave the rest and I'm okay with that.

However, the PT has really ruined SW for me in a big way. It's like dating a really cool girl for a while and setting up a good history only to find out that she is a he. A little hard to go back and forget the new information, you know?

Darn you George Lucas, why did you have to be a woman!!!

I've thought long and hard about this issue since ROTS came out. In my opinion, a first timer should watch the movies in the order they were released. After that, the "shock" value is gone and there is no harm watching the movies in story order. I think the movies do play out interestingly in story order. Vader's character is quite different when we first see him, though I'm quickly immersed in "the old Vader" by the time of Capt. Antilles' death.

Where is The Emperor, he is the star of the prequels, and he is mentioned in one line in the movie?

I would love nothing more than if Lucas had a chance to see my edit and, specifically, what I did after the credits in ANH. Re-using what I deleted from ESB (because of incongruity introduced within the movie itself) here also allows us to see Palpatine in the movie in a way that doesn't disrupt the movie as we know it.

Where is the inner thoughts of Vader about his loss of his wife, and why is the whole movie really not about him?

Here's what bothers me most about the up-and-coming generation, and what Lucas has been saying. No matter which way you order the saga, the PT is about Anakin, Padme and Obi Wan. The OT is about Luke, Leia and Han. Those who can't make the mental separation between the focus of the two story lines concern me more than those who complain about FX. At this point, 20 years have passed. Vader has had a chance to consume Anakin almost completely. While he undoubtedly thinks about her, he probably didn't brood on her any more. In fact, his old emotions didn't start to resurface until Obi-Wan came onto the Death Star.

Why is the lightsaber battle so slow, and really nothing comparable to the prequels?

Quite simply, Obi-Wan is old, and Vader is practically a robot. They just aren't agile any more. Lord Tyrannus' acrobatics in ROTS actually undermine the OT in this respect.

edit: Not to mention the fact that Obi-Wan tells Luke "I'm getting too old for this sort of thing" and Vader actually says "Your powers are weak, old man." Lucas was right in the PT to make the saber duels "faster, more intense." than the OT. Newbies need to understand this was by design and for a good reason.

Why when they go to hyperspace, do they not go into that circle, and then go to hyperspace like the prequels?

Other than Jedi starfighters, no other ships do this. To the kids who ask this question, I answer them to pay better attention to the prequels themselves.

Why does ObiWan call him Darth Vader in Episode IV, and when he called him Anakin throughout the Duel in Episode III, when he was clearly Darth Vader by then?

MBJ answered this perfectly in an earlier post when he said: "Because he didn't realize how truly far gone Anakin was at that point."

A certain point-of-view? Hehe.
George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

Was Palpy=Sideous supposed to be some sort of surprise? I overheard a lady a couple months back in the toy isle at Target saying to a friend while looking at the Palpy=Sideous figure, "I knew that he was Darth Sideous! I was telling everyone at work and no one believed me!" I thought this was absurd. If the movies proper didn't make it obvious, the fact that Ian was credited as Senator Palpatine/Darth Sideous in every movie should have been a clue.

Anyways, I thought there might be an explanation about how Palpatine had split personalities or maybe was possessed or something... but RotS put that to rest.

I thought that it was SO obvious that Palpatine / Sideous were the same guy, that it couldn't be true. I thought there was going to be some thing to do with the force that 'they would become one' or something like that. And that would tie in with why the Jedi, especially Obi-Wan, dissapear when they die. But, Lucas just chose the obvious. I have to admit that I knew it all along, but I was still dissappointed.

How anyone could not have thought Palpatine & Sidious were one and the same is beyond me.

Lucas spelled it out so blatantly.

Qui-Gon's funeral, Yoda says "Always two there are, a Master and an Apprentice" and it cut to a medium close up of Palpatine.

It couldn't have been more obvious if there was a freeze frame with the flashing words "HE'S THE EMPEROR!"

Same thing goes (off topic) for the 6th Sense - it was so plainly obvious that Bruce Willis was dead from the get-go, but I digress....

Oh yeah, I'm with you. He gives it away SO blatantly and if you're at ALL familiar with the language of film, you know who Palpatine really is by the end of TPM, but I guess he left him out of the credits as insurance for those who didn't know.

*Maybe* if I didn't already know that the Emperor's surname was Palpatine after ROTJ, it might have tricked me. But then watching all the political goings-ons, there's no way you couldn't suspect at least one of the politicians to be him, lest he take the title by force.
