Was the Original Trilogy ever released to *Super* VHS?

Let me start by saying, I am NOT trying to offend anybody here. Twice now, I've posted questions, and people assumed I was posting insult.

So I'm stating up-front: "I'm not trying to insult you."

Just curious..... was the Original Trilogy ever released to *Super* VHS? The laserdisc is good, but I'd rather have Super VHS if possible (better resolution).

VHS = ~1975 standard = 220 lines of horizontal resolution

Super VHS = ~1990 standard = 425 lines of horizontal resolution. Super VHS has almost-DVD-like clarity, and I love it. It's great for recording TV without any degradation! And I'd love to own the original trilogy in this format.

By the way, there's a NEW standard out there = Digital VHS = capable of recording 1080-interlaced HDTV upto 4 hours. Can also record 50 hours of DVDs.

It rocks, but I've not heard anything about it for at least a year. Are they still selling D-VHS transfers?

Oh, and to answer your question - no, there was never an S-VHS transfer. Here's a comprehensive list of the versions.

Looking at your other thread. (Damn, you sure do rub people the wrong way j/k j/k

Wouldn't this at least be close to the resolution you were hoping for?

Nah... PAL VHS is still only ~220 lines horizontal resolution. The bandwidth of the signal stored to tape is too narrow to hold any higher resolution.

So the ratio of PAL VHS to PAL LD is about the same as NTSC VHS to NTSC LD then?

(I'm American, so PAL is unfamiliar to me.)
