OK then. If you have a source of funding I can get several of those titles scanned in 4K right now…

I’d really love to see these two restored - Aladdin & The Lion King. Would even like to contribute some funds later.

The Lady and the Tramp preservation will include both the widescreen and fullscreen versions of the film.

Please explain better, so that even a non-English native speaker like me could understand.

Thanks!

The goal of this project is to preserve the entire Disney Animated Canon up to Fantasia 2000, with all of the details of the cels, in full 4K.

Details please? I mean this sounds great and all, but what are you using? Sources? Etc.

OK, understood. So you have all those titles on 35mm films, in good shape, and a film scanner, or at least the means to scan them all, right?

Yep. It’s all very well and good to say we’re going to have this “massive community effort” to do 4K restorations of 29 animated classics from film, but it requires: time, money, 10s of 1000s of hours of labor, and prints. Unless you find a pristine print of each and every film (which you won’t), restoration of just one of this films by a small devoted team would take longer than until the 80th anniversary of Snow White even if you started today. Also, there’s really no point in restoring these classics in 4K anyway as they are hand drawn animations with only up to 2K detail in the source.

As mentioned though, if you have a source of funding I and others here have prints we can send off to scanners for 4K scanning right now if you want.

How about 2k Scans of The Black Cauldron, The Three Caballeros, Make mine music, Melody Time, and Saludos Amigos first so I can complete my Blu Ray collection before we move on to re-releasing yet again the other films?

We may as well restore Disney’s live-action catalogue too, while we’re at it 😉

Okay guys, I’m currently working on getting a number of IB Tech Disney prints scanned at 4K. IB Tech prints will be much better quality than Kodak prints, especially LPP prints. At the moment I’m getting choked by funding unfortunately - it’s difficult to find prints in good condition given their age. I need to buy at least one new hard drive soon, and pay some other bills associated with all this stuff. If anyone can help out please message me there are some opportunities I don’t want to see lost. 😃

We may also have the opportunity to scan at least one IB Tech print in Europe on an Arri 6K soon as well.

I’ll contribute to pretty much anything Disney once my current pledges have been covered 😃 😃

If this was more about the live-action compared to animated Walt Disney Pictures/Studios output, I’d’ve been way more interested. i.e. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Black Hole, etc.
Top priorities should be The Sword in the Stone and any other titles which were heavily DNR/EE for their Blu-ray disc releases. Leave the film grain! These movies should have the original cinematic logo before the film anyway.

My focus is on the animations. I can get 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea scanned if you want to pay the fees (about $800 or so all up).

Not interested in the animations. Good luck anyway.

Right, that’s why I told you we can scan 20,000 Leagues if you come up with the scanning fee. There’s lots of films that can be scanned if someone pays for it, but it’s not going to automatically happen.

I’m focused at the moment on Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty (both IB Tech). I may also have an opportunity for Lady and the Tramp on IB Tech as well. If anyone is interested in helping funding is desperately needed!! Soupdrinker has already been an amazing help, as have a few other people. 😃

IB Tech prints are the closest to a negative that we can access. They are far superior to LPP, and also show improvements over other stocks of their era.

Just to remind people, the IB technicolor prints I have access to: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp, and yes 20,000 Leagues if there’s interest in that are all in excellent condition. We won’t find them in better condition to scan.

This is why I need help, I don’t want to loose the opportunity to scan prints in excellent condition. They will need very little digital clean up for release. If we loose an opportunity like this we could spend years looking for prints in similar condition.

And I also need more hard drives, I haven’t spent any donated money on hard drives, it’s all been used on scanning costs. If anyone wants to help with storage, I need to get 2x WD Gold 6TB as soon as I can afford it (price is $253 ea) plus another external 8TB sometime ($200).

Hello everyone! Just a reminder that scanning is not cheap, and without new contributors I won’t be able to organise scanning of everything I would like to.

There are three new projects I would like to pursue:

  1. Fantasia (KOSTAL) from 2 prints (1 Kostal print, 1 IB print).
  2. Sleeping Beauty.
  3. Lady and the Tramp IB/Technicolor from 2 prints (plus the LPP already scanned).

If any of these interest you and you can help please get in contact!

Lady and the tramp technicolor, that would be cool, team negative’s lpp already looks great to my eyes, but the more the better.

The Lady and the Tramp LPP had no involvement from TN1. The scan looks good but it has multiple issues starting with the off-centre cropping!

I admit it’s not perfect, I actually never noticed the cropping. I’d still be curious to see how the color, contrast, etc compares to a dye transfer print.

Yeah there are a few issues with the LPP, the biggest being that the wider perfs and soundtrack area causes it to be cropped to 2.35:1 from 2.55:1. It also doesn’t contain as much detail in the dark areas as a Technicolor print. And then yes the colour will not necessarily look identical to the Technicolor version, in fact I would expect some significant differences. There is one print I know we can scan, and another I’m hoping to get access to.
