Maybe we should just start redirecting everything back to the politics thread. It's not like this thread hasn't become "Politics, Part 2".

Plus, if we were "stealing natural resources", which we are not, then why would we be paying $3 a gallon? Seems like we'd be at .50 a gallon with all this stolen crude floating around. Sort of an enigma to me. Anyway, yes, my pal C3PX is right this is hardly the thread for this rhetoric. For a while, I thought eros stupid comment was gonna be ignored and left for the thread history with no response, which would have been cool.

I think I'd do my best to just ignore them. I'd try to convince my family to do the same. Maybe even drop some hints to the media during interviews or something.

Speaking of media and interviews, apparently the students are sick of the media and are giving them the cold shoulder when asked about the guy and the shooting. Good on them I say.

I agree. The media coverage of this has been sickening. Around the clock nonsense.

I will tell you why it are often people from Europe who rant about America.

The truth is, we look up to America. When we look at America we see some things we would also like to see in Europe. I think a lot of people are (a bit) jealous of America.
So when you're big example does things that you wouldn't expect from it, or you don't want it to do you tend to be more angry than when Russia, or South American countries or China (from whom you know they are more corrupt, don't pay as much attention to international right, human right etc.) does something like that. You expect bad behavior from other countries but not from America.
Our expectations of the biggest western country are much higher than the rest of the world. Yes, everybody is bitching about Guantanamo although they know it is much worse in Chinese or Brazilian prisons. We bitch because the US of A is our example and we expect much much more from you than we do of other countries.

That's the best argument I've ever heard for strong criticism of America. Unfortunately, you're the only person I've ever heard it from. I see people on the internet all the time who operating under the conviction that America is an evil, horrible rat hole.

It's the big morality part of the 'dream' that is the problem. as soon as something like that school incident this week happens the morality establishment are running around lokking for a scape goat. You know the usual; .....too much Grand Theft Auto, Heavy Metal, Violent movies etc. (an easy target to blame). Instead at looking at society within and the problems that lead to these incidents. Don't get me wrong the UK is bad with violent crime these days but it doesn't get world wide coverage when someone goes haywire like the US does.

Actually, surprisingly enough, I haven't heard anyone blame anything except bullying. According to the video he released, his bullying took place in middle and high school. I guess he was a little slow on the uptake if he was exacting revenge at VT for things that happened in high school.

I have heard plenty of how we need to take a stronger stance against bullying. My thoughts on that are that parents need to come down harder on the school administration when it happens. Having been there (I was bullied) and knowing how the administration works, I'd tell my kid "If he pushes you, hit him". You don't have to win the fight for the bully to leave you alone. The worst that would happen these days is that you'd get expelled (I don't think you'd be expelled for hitting someone though). At best, it's a day or a few days suspension. I think I can live with that, but I won't have to deal with it for a while.

The problem with looking "within" at society is that people are bullied everyday, yet kids aren't going on rampages everyday. I really don't think this was a problem with society. I think he was mentally disturbed (he was in a mental hospital for a while) and needed to be under close supervision.

I was bullied too so I know what it's like to have those with power abuse it. I believe there's two sides to this story... Firstly, Cho's an idiot for what he did. there's never an excuse for taking the life of innocent people. Sure I was bullied for no good reason... And I got into a fight at school after having my head bashed into a brick wall by some punks. What more can I say but this is simply the reality we live in... Some people are ass holes. And some people don't like to be pushed around. Some people will fight back. He probably couldn't get any girlfriends, was probably being bullied, and had it all explained to him that he was just 'depressed' and then people left it at that. I'd say he was more horny than depressed, since he stalked girls for a while. In my humble opinion the current generation of college kids is scared to engage in sexual relations because of aids and stuff, so I'm not surprised.

Secondly, kids are bullied every day. And it's wrong. All those kids being bullied are on the edge right now. We can't run and hide from that fact. Those kids being bullied have all at one point thought about some way to defend themselves from the constant bullying they endure DAILY for no greater reason than them being the path through which the bully can boost their self esteem.

Cho's set himself up as a hero to the people who go unnoticed... and unfortunately he succeeded. By getting his face on the news, his words transmitted and immortalized for millions of people, HE WON. The dumbass Media granted his final wish.

America needs to think long and hard about its problems now... something like this just can't be forgotten about next week and everything goes back to normal. It'll only escalate if we do nothing, keep quiet, and hope it goes away.

This is the problem, most schools in my area do not even consider an expulsion for fighting like they used to just 10 or 15 years ago. Kids, and parents, are scared to engage in fighting around here for several reasons with the primary problem being the wretched idea of Zero Tolerance. For example, and this is based on actual events that I encountered, a 14 year old boy is being bullied by a 16 year old boy on a regular basis. One day the 14 year old had enough and when the 16 year old thumped the 14 year olds ear, the 14 year old kid jumps on top of the 16 year old and started to whale on him. Totally took him down and left the 16 year old bully with a busted lip and black eye, no other injuries. Well, the school officials called the police and parents. Charges were filed on the 14 year old for assault while the 16 year old bully was disciplined for simply causing a disturbance and moved to TEAM school for a month, which is a highly monitored and regulated school for the bad apples where they have to wear uniforms and can't talk at all. After being convicted of assault and spending a couple months in a juvenile detention center, the 14 year was made to do 1000 community service hours and attend TEAM school for the remainder of his school career. So in the end, it seems that bullying is encouraged and standing up for yourself is not, bad signal to send.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I'm not surprised something like that happened. I guess my feelings on it are that I'd tell my kid "If you get pushed or bullied, hit them, make sure you hurt them, and do your best not to get caught". That essentially means make sure no adults see you and make sure you've got friends around that'll back you. At least that way there's conflicting stories and no one will ever know what really happened.

And Wayseed, I don't think college students should be engaging in sexual activity anyway. They're their to learn, not have sex with anything that moves.

Yeah... College students afraid to have sex? That's...

I don't think so. And even suggesting that almost implies that the girl Cho was stalking (or any girl fro that matter) would be doing something wrong or unintelligent by chosing not to have sex. That's a frankly dangerous mentality to even consider. Seriously, though, why should college students be having sex? Unless their married and living together on campus, that's not what college is for. Being horny is no excuse to stalk a girl anyway, and from everything else I've heard, Cho wasn't a pleasant guy to begin with.

I don't mean to harp on this, but you seem to be implying that the tragedy could have been avoided if he'd just been able to find someone to sleep with...

Maybe that's not what you meant to imply, but that's how it came across.

Yeah I agree. There are much easier ways to overcome sexual frustration than punching holes in all your class mates. If he was able to justify murdering a bunch of people, I am sure he could have just justified raping a girl then blowing his head off instead. That would have probably been much more sexually fullfilling than mass murder.

Months in a juvenile detention center for a black eye and a bloody lip? Also, the fact that it was self defense didn't figure into anything?

That was what I thought, but the self defense was considered mute by the judge and prosecuting attorney because they explained that the level of force far exceeded what was necessary. The attorney basically stated, "Black eye and bloody lip for a simple thumped ear. This amount of force used by said 14 year old was excessive and unnecessary in response to minor teasing which could have simply been reported to a teacher at a later time and did not require an immediate reaction by the Defendant."

Now I am usually one for punishment for the well deserving and I rarely choose the side of the defendant, but this one was stupid. When I was in school, I had several fights against bullies and I never got charged criminally or got more than a couple days suspension, usually in school type.

Going back this dumbass Cho, I find to argument that women wouldn't give him attention weak. It is so damn easy these days to get a piece of ass it is ridiculous. I know a many places to go to get a little for free, but that aside he could have gotten some top notch female attention with that $600 he used to buy the glock. Loser.
