I almost got into a fight with a kid today over accidentally spraying oil. I don't belive in fighting so I walked away. It shows who is the better person.

This is the first I've read about this, Ric. I feel so bad for you I don't know what to say. I've never experienced anything like that because I live in a small town and people treat each other more like human beings.

Just reading about this makes me sick. I'll pray for your family.

P.S. I know you said not to, but I really would get out of wherever you are in Brazil. If you moved up to where I am, I think you would have a totally different outlook on life.

The problem is, Davis, yeah, Rik could move to your little town and live happily, but it would be an imagined happiness based on life in a microcosm. As they say, ignorance is bliss, and I don't believe that living a sheltered life in a pocket of niceness is the answer.

Yes, besides what YIYF just said, I could move to a different place in Brazil with no crime whatsoever, a small friendly town, away from the huge urban areas. That uncle of mine lived in a city where there has been only 3 murders, 2 of those criminal, he being the last one. Although this country sucks for a whole number of reasons (and for those conservatives out there, I criticize Brazil much more than the USofA, only I don't discuss it here because you wouldn't understand), going to some place else is not going to solve anything. I could move to a cute little cheese-makers town in Switzerland where everyone is happy and good-hearted, and still be the subject of mean persons, and crime would still happen, and violence would still happen.

Mankind itself is beyond salvation, so I don't care anymore. If anyone wants to put a gun on my head and kill me for my wallet, go ahead. I won't be losing much anyway.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Come on man, don't say that. We need people like you to at least slightly balance things out.

My theory, for what it is worth, is that all significant acts of good and evil stem from the knowledge of mortality.

We are greedy because we know we have a limited time to enjoy living and avoid drudgery.

We wish to leave our mark so we will be remembered.

The robbery is obviously an attempt to get wealth quickly with the minimum of effort.

The murder is more difficult to understand but If this man was caught he will be statistically significant therefore live a short time in infamy after his biological death (nobody seems to be in a hurry to forget Hitler). He may feel he gains power from this knowledge.

Often people who commit these crimes get high on drugs to chemically give them the ability to perform a potentially dangerous act.

This could impair the judgement of the men involved (he may not of set out to kill but the chemicals flipped a switch blinding him to the consequences).

Adrenaline is a drug produced by the body in times of stress.

It too can impair judgement.

Ultimately there is very little meaning in life other than what you chose to make from it. Bad and good things happen almost in a tidal sense.

If you are patient all bad things pass but you have to prepare yourself for the certainty that all good things pass too.

ah yes, I remember this thread.   No idea what bingo said nor why he revived this thread.    I miss Ricarleite.  I disagreed with him a lot, but he was a nice guy.

Some of those images are pretty tasteless especially considering the subject matter.

Agreed...but it's also worth questioning why you felt the need to bump this thread.

I read it and the subject drew me to comment on it.
