TMNT arcade in my dad's Pizza Hut. I got it for Xbox LIVE Arcade, its just not the same mashing those buttons.

Link to the Past (SNES): My used copy had a save on it right before the end. If I ever got frustrated in my save, I'd load that one up and beat the snot out of everything.

SimCity (SNES): It wasn't much, but that was the beauty. The fact that you could build railroads instead of cars and people would be happy and there was no traffic. The simple 3x3 squares instead of the "high, med, low" density stuff of today's versions. The free-play scenario that was just solid land with trees in the shape of Mario's face.

Now, there's one I can relate to.  Proof that you don't have to give a crap about a show to enjoy a game.

man no one here has talked about Super Mario RPG. Possibly the best RPG ever made.

Starting playing it on the Virtual Console a while ago but put it down. Will probably get back into it at some point. So far it felt kind of like a rough prototype for Paper Mario.

Okay here are two games I haven't played or even thought about in years. Two games that were frustrating yet rewarding, two games with sequels [of sorts] that I never got around to checking out...

ANOTHER WORLD [aka OUT OF THIS WORLD]

FLASHBACK

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJyP5efESaI&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AQvgbdtIJk&feature=related

I played both those two games and their sequels.  You could only get Heart of the Alien, as far as I knew/know on Sega CD, which neither I nor anyone I knew had.  I replayed OOTW/AW on a SNES emulator not too long ago and started looking into HotA again.  I found an emulator and played through it.  I think if you could handle a replay of OOTW, you would really did HotA since it's mostly more of the same thing, but maybe a slight advancement.

I also replayed Flashback around the same time.  That game is so well balanced, I found it extremely compelling.  18 years later and I think it's held up remarkably well.  My friends and I thought about making a game in XNA a couple years back and that was one of the ones that I thought was 1. simple enough that we could mimick it and 2. awesome enough that people would want to play it.  The sequel, Fade to Black, was pretty good, if I recall.  I remember getting it for my PC on release day and being pretty thrilled.  It probably hasn't stood the test of time quite as well, however.

There was a new game called One Escapee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnEscapee (New in 1997, I guess...)) that was supposed to be a spiritual successor to both OOTW and Flashback.  I was pretty stoked, but I couldn't get more than about 5 minutes or so into it.  Either the game was buggy, or the player was. ;)

EDIT:  Damnit, xhonzi!  I was typing, kay?!

Don't get me wrong, I love the Paper Mario series as well.

Let me break it down for you, mkay?  In certain ways, it's hard to compare the two, as all of the Mario RPG series takes things in different directions.  As far as the action command aspects, yeah, the Paper Mario series takes that aspect from the original RPG and runs with in ways the original never dreamed.  Each character has a specific function on and off the battlefield.

In terms of being an RPG, though, the Paper Mario series is definitely the most simplistic and stripped down of the bunch, though.  The original game definitely has the edge in terms of story and characters, though, where your party members actually feel like characters and not just tools to use in specific situations.

The first game definitely has my favorite depiction of the Mario universe ever.  I remember even attempting a novelization of the game when I was about to finish middle school.  Sadly, I never finished it.  Maybe someday...

This thing ate quarters like crazy.  It cost 25 cents per football quarter, and there were six quarters!  Someone never bothered to define "quarter" to the guys who made the game.

Mentioned this before, but I entered a Cyberball Tournament once with a buddy at an arcade, and we finished second out of some 50 people.  We won our semifinal match on a last second play and the whole place went crazy.

Yeah, that's my nerd moment of the day...

River Raid - awesome
Pitfall - never played.  But I killed tons of time on the original and never beat it
Defender - never cared for the controls
ET - The Atari 2600 Game?  Hilariously bad.
Star Raiders - I always thought this looked cool and never had a chance to play it
Prince of Persia - too much damn work!
Loderunner - one of my favorite Apple II games
Donald Duck's Playground - never heard of it

eh, that's enough for now

I disagree.  Simpsons arcade was funnier, but the game play is too clunky.

Yeah, The Mario and Luigi series always went too far with the action commands for me, to the point where you needed some really good reflexes to get anywhere. I always felt Paper Mario 2 had the best characterizations and world. That game was absolutely hilarious. Paper Mario was my second RPG, after Pokemon Blue, so I hold it in pretty high regard.

Whenever I want to do a jump kick in TMNT I always end up just slinging my weapon wildly in the air... that's one reason I dislike it.  Also, too easy to die.  I actually like the NES version more, even though it's way simplified.  Probably because I know it better.

Really?  I love the Mario and Luigi games... well, the first one as that's the only one I have... I don't own a DS.  But I really can't say enough nice things about that first Mario and Luigi game.

And Mario RPG was actually the very first RPG I played.
