Looks like there's a good amount of news coming out of Gamescon for xbox this year. We haven't really seen much of interest from E3 et al but now we can get a good idea of the games and features coming out in the next few months.

With all the features coming out it looks like the Xbone will finally be the system that it should have been on day one. Further proof that they launched the system way too early.

better interface, better social features, interesting looking games, media streaming...

new halo waypoint type app looks interesting -

Played some Artemis starship bridge simulator last weekend with a big group of people. Good fun. It all went down hill once we discovered we could name our own ships. I lost count of the dick jokes pretty quickly at that point..

Been playing a bit of Broforce lately. Good fun. I don't think it's complete yet. Somebody gifted me a copy on steam.

Anyone else thinking of getting Destiny? - I think Doubleofive is getting about 12 copies. I'm considering getting it. The controls are good and the story could be fun. Not really a fan of the MMO type elements.

The only reason I'd touch an Xbone is for HALO. The Xbox fumble had nothing to do with being released early, the management became complacent and cocky. New people are in charge now and they're making nice headway in making up for their predecessors. But I'm still moving to the PS4 as it's still the better system.

So yes, I will be getting Destiny but it'll be on the PS4. =P

Any of you guys played Dragon's Dogma? It's been out for a long time, but I keep replaying. I need to go to a Betty Ford clinic for obsessive gamers disorder. I've done literally everything there is to do, but I KEEP COMING BACK. The story isn't that great, the map isn't vast enough, but something about it just keeps me sucked in.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

DESTINY

It's pretty cool. Mrs. O'Five and I finished the story missions yesterday, but there are new specs for the classes you unlock at lvl 15, so we still have room to grow, plus you can roll a new character that uses the new specs from the beginning once you unlock it. Johnny Ringo joined us for a late-night-for-us/early-morning-for-him Strike, which is what would normally be called a dungeon crawl. It only took us a couple hours to take down the giant boss. ;-)

My only real bummer is only having 3 people per fireteam, because the more the merrier. They are doing Raids now, which allows 6 players. It's a lvl 26 event, so its an endgame thing (the level cap is 20, not sure how leveling works past that). A lot of people giving the game negative reviews seem to be playing by themselves. It's definitely a co-op game.

There's multiplayer, but we haven't gone there yet. Apparently you take your character with its weapons and abilities in, so I imagine it'd be frustrating to me.

So I caved and got Destiny. I was still undecided on release day but then all the local retailers slashed about a third off the price so I decided to pick it up.

I think a lot of people were expecting something completely different and I'd say that Bungie have done a pretty poor job of explaining things.

I've just hit level 20 in Destiny and it looks like you can go back and do the story missions at much harder settings, initially there were two skill settings per mission and now there are about 5.

I'm not exactly clear in progression at this point either, it seems to be more based on what you're wearing.

I've also unlocked weekly and daily challenges. Not sure if it will be a mix of things or just strike missions.

on a team is fun but 4 would be better. I've played thru solo and with friends [including the o'fives] and it works well as a co-op experience.

I've been playing it pretty solid for a week and i'm yet to finish the main story. I'd say that's decent value so far given that I can finish a HALO game inside of a day.

With Multiplayer it looks like there is no ranking system so you wind up with players of wildly varying skill levels. There will always be somebody running around with better gear than you. And even if a low level player is good, they just wont have access to good resources yet.

Here is an interesting question(at least I think so),is there a difference between a game and an interactive toy?

What I mean is I see some people drawing the line and say that if a game doesn't have levels or defined objectives it's not a game it's an interactive toy.

This is an interesting question to me because some of my favorite "games" from when I was a kid don't fit the mold of being a game.  I mean is something like 3D movie maker really a game or is it a toy? What about the Sims games, are they games or toys that happen to be on a computer?

If there is a line between video games and video toys where is that line?

What do you think?

Been playing FFVII for the first time seriously. I'm enjoying it; it usually takes a lot for an RPG to sustain my attention and, so far, it's doing its job. Of course, this being 2014, I know most of the plot details -- but there's nothing wrong with being taken along for the ride.

Cloud is a much more dynamic character than all the spin-offs and fans would have you believe. Especially Advent Children. Screw that movie.

Yeah this is a case of a good game where you should avoid all spin off media. Even the FFVII spin off games were pretty bad.

I don't worship FFVII the way most gamers may age seem to(FFVIII was my first game so I seem to be the only person who likes it better then FFVII,I know I am a freak but I like the junction and draw system)but even I can see that the movie and the spin off games are nowhere near as good as the game they spun off from.

Open question for everyone here, what is your favorite FF game?

For me it's a tie between FFVIII and FFIX.

FFVIII was my first FF game and the first RPG I played all the way to the end(I gained 40 pounds spending six months exploring every inch of this game staying inside instead of riding my bike every day like I used to)and it holds a special place in my heart and I seem to be one of the few people who likes the characters in this game and didn't mind the plot twists. In my mind all the FF games even seven have somewhat silly stories and plot twists so that is part of the charm for me.

FFIX is to ne the perfect FF game.  I know it is silly but to me everything works.  The graphics are stylized in such away that to me they still look good,The characters and world are really fun,and the gameplay is just perfect for a turn based RPG. It's easy to play and everything is set up in a logical fashion so you never feel lost and you are always having fun but it is hard to master and unlike some other games every time I die I don't feel like the game cheated,I feel like I just need to think about what I did and fight smarter next time and I no point was a tempted to give up on the game.  In short from start to finish I had a blast with FFIX and it is one of those games that I keep coming back to again and again.

How about you, what is your favorite FF game?

Okay so any Mass Effect fans here?  I guess there are a few.  One thing that I find interesting is that each Mass effect fan seems to have their own idea of what Tali looks like under her mask,in fact the only thing Mass Effect fans seem to be able to agree on is that the bad photoshop job that wasn't even a character model we saw in game in ME3 is not what she looks like.  So here is a question, what do you think Quarians look like, and do you have a favorite fan made version?

This is my favorite. It me it has just the right degree of alienness while still having something that feels like Tali.  I really like this version and it is the version I see in my head when I play the games or write fan fiction.

How about you,do you have a favorite version,or do you like what was done in the game, and if so why?

Just got Spec Ops: The Line as well. Haven't played it yet. I look forward to checking it out.

I mentioned to xhonzi that I was interested in getting The Bureau: Xcom Declassified and he pointed me towards Humble Bundle where you can get it for as little as a dollar.

I opted to spend a few dollars more to also get Spec Ops as well as the first 2 Bioshocks and a few other things.

all Hail xhonzi - his Bioshock ramblings paid off for once ;)

My local Kmart is (finally) going out of business. The sales aren't insane yet, but the deepest discount so far was 25% off all video games. They had a "Shadow of Mordor" that I couldn't resist.

So far I really like it. The Nemesis system of the orc that kills you getting promoted and leveling up does really add frustration/challenge to death in a game where your character is already dead. Then interrogating another orc to find out the other one's weakness then setting up a plan to get them is really great.

For example, one of the SOBs that killed me is having a recruitment event. I learned from another orc that this one is susceptible to ranged attacks and can be killed instantly by an arrow to the head. So I start the event, climb up to the top of a tower, wait for him to come by and start talking and shoot him in the head. The rest of the orcs run away without their leader and I fade back into the shadows.

It does feel a lot like Assassin's Creed, but that's not a bad thing at all.

Coming back to check on you guys. How is everyone? It's been a while...

Been playing the hell out of Battlefield 4 again for the past couple months. The new patches have done a LOT to clear up a great many of the issues that plagued the game at launch. It's nice to see DICE and EA committing themselves to making it right, even if it is late in the game, the Community Test Environment they released a few months ago is a fantastic resource that allows DICE to release frequent patches and repatches into a test environment to get feedback from players and make any necessary changes before they release the final patch into the actual game. All games need test centers.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Picked up ALIEN: Isolation a few days ago. I think I'm about halfway through at this point. I wont reveal too much, just want to say the atmosphere is amazing, sometimes I catch myself wandering around staring at the environment...and then I get eaten by a Xenomorph.

Long story short - you're trapped on a partly abandoned space station with a Xeno. There are other Humans, both friend and foe as well as primitive androids that will attack you if you break the rules. It's about 15 Years after ALIEN and you play as Ripley's daughter searching for any indication of what happened to the Nostromo.

it can be pretty tense at times.

The Kmart near my old Denver residence (and kitchen (wink)) has gone out of business 6 or 7 times in as many years.  Like a stupid, I get lured in each time by the promise of insane sales due to the shuttering of the doors.  Somehow K-Mart's prices at 40% off start to approach WalMart and Target's standard prices.  Why does this store still exist?!?!

During the going-out-of-business sales, I see people who apparently don't watch as much TPIR as I do stocking up on overpriced junk they don't need.  I don't mean to judge, but these people often look like they are the members* of our great society that can least afford to be paying higher than average prices for standard household goods...  Anyhow, K-Mart seems to make enough bread during these events to unshutter their doors for another several seaons, only to promise going-out-of-business-price-insanity a few months later.

Though I picked up a few movie/game related items at these sales too.

Sounds good!  Maybe once I get caught up on AC**, I will be picking this one up.  I really do love the AC series, but I often want it to expand its horizons a bit.  This new contender in the genre will hopefully shake things up and bring some new ideas to the melting pot.

*005, for example.

**It will never happen.  I'm about to start AC4, but with 2 new AC games this year and all of the other crap I've got going on...
