The 8 and 16 bit games have save states? Huh. No excuse for anyone not to play and beat Zelda II now. That would make a lot of those old games cake walks. Imagine playing Donkey Kong or Pac-Man and being able to constantly save the game and reload it if you loose a guy. Kind of takes the bit out of them.

Pfftt...I just finished playing DKC for about 2 hours, of which 1 1/2 hours was spent on the first mine cart level. Let me tell you, I said a lot of things, but two of the words were not cake or walk.

Not quite, 3PX. You only get one save-state, and it only works when exiting the game to the Wii menu. It's just a way to quit playing the game and still keep your place, without having to deal with clumsy passwords.

Sean, I used to like you, but lately you've become nothing more than a troll.

Go start another one of your useless threads, and unless you have something valuable to say about video games, stay out of here.

Sorry to be blunt, but you're pissing a lot of people off lately and doing yourself a great disservice.

AH, that makes more sense, I was thinking of the first peron shooter save states, where the instant you die you can just reload where you last saved. That is a good idea actually since some of those old games didn't have save options, or you had to use those passwords.

Cassidy, I wasn't refering to DKC, I meant the original Donkey Kong game. If you had save states you could just save the game at the beginning of every level and you would be through it in no time. You could even save it everytime you successfully make it over a barrel, that would really make it easy. Same kind of thing for Pac-man.

Those mine cart rides on Donkey Kong Country were always my favorite. They can be frustraiting, but man are they fun. Is this the first time you have played through the game?

This saving problem is frustrating to me...it's poor design. They should have either TRULY allowed you to pick it up after saving and be where you left off, or remove the option.

Overall it's a big turn off for me. I'm assuming the Fire Dungeon in WW is not that difficult, being the first one, and yet I've spent about 2 hours on it and keep getting stuck at the beginning because I've got to take the kids somewhere...GRRRRRRR

Nope - I played through it about 12 years ago, and just forgot where everything was. That game is all about the memorization, which is partially why it is so good.

As I said to my wife, this is one of those games I can stay up till 5 AM playing and not even know where the time went!

Jed, it's always been this way in Zelda games. It's nothing new.

I must admit, the old school gaming days did seem more difficult at the time, but looking back - the lack of save games was a substitute for actual difficulty, and an actual challenge (and by no means am I saying that modern games are pulling their weight in this respect, either). The clear and present danger of having to start all over again the next day was the moving force to complete a game...

I totally understand that, and you're right it was a HUGE motivator in the old days. I was thinking about this in the wee-hours today. I love the game, don't get me wrong. However this "feature" is a huge detriment to my continued play because I just can't afford to spend the time on it like I used to back then. I'm going to continue trying, but I'll have to remember to clear about 3 hours of uninterrupted play when entering a dungeon in the future.

That's pretty much how you do it. Typically, I save when I enter a new dungeon and wait till I have a good chunk of free time (Like Friday night) and complete the dungeon then. If nothing else it makes the game last longer.

Anyways, the VC released a few not so good games, except for Tecmo Bowl, which I have never played. And suprisingly no galaga or excitibike, so unfortunately these will be here next week

A Link to the Past and the other older games will take you no where near 3 hours a dungeon. Also usually the puzzles remain finished if they were difficult puzzles or if they were hidden secrets they usually don't go hidden again. But if you do stop and save or die in the middle you do begin at the entrance.

The dungeon design in ALTTP is so intuitively done, that even when you do die and start in the first room it's relatively easy to get back to where you were. All of the doors you unlocked (with keys) remain open so you can usually just use the Pegasus boots and run through.

For those of you that haven't played Zelda II, you have no idea how easy you've got it, right now. Jesus, wait till that game comes out on the VC. I think I left my NES on for a month finishing that game.

That gets me to thinking. What are the crown jewels in your gaming crown? Let's keep it to 5 "achievements" in your gaming history that you are most proud of. Here's mine.

1) Finishing 'Zelda II'
2) Finishing 'Halo' on Legendary
3) Beating 'Golden Axe' in the arcade for under $10
4) Finishing 'Ninja Gaiden' (Xbox, but on lowest difficulty setting - still hard!)
5) Finishing 'SMB 3' for the first time.

Ah, I am sure there are more that I cannot think of right now but the very top two I can think of are,

1. Finishing "Zelda II"
2. Making it as far as I have in "Battletoads"

'The Adventures of Link' isn't on virtual console yet? Is there a release date in sight? The first one is right? I can't wait until Zelda II comes to the VC, the discussion in here will be great. Sage, I highly recommend you get it for curiosity reasons, but I would advise you not to attempt to beat it. If you thought starting at the beginning of a dungeon was annoying... you haven't seen anything yet.

I've come close and given up on number 2 (got up to the Warthog gauntlet at the end, and gave up in frustration). Never played Golden Axe at the arcade, but I've finished it on Megadrive a million times (probably not as hard, and the game itself probably only cost me $20). So far, not very impressive, right?

But I have finished Ninja Gaiden 3 times (on Normal and Hard) with all 50 scarabs, so that's gotta count for something...

I guess the jewel in my gaming crown is how I play my Sonic games. I can equal the world speed record for Level 1 Act 1 of Sonic 2, but it's far more impressive just watching me play Sonic 3 in general. Last week a friend of mine commented on how fluidly I change my playing style depending on my choice of shield, which I've never noticed before, but I was stoked that he pointed it out. Aside from that, I can collect all the chaos emeralds by Level 2 (Hydrocity Zone). Not the hardest game on Earth, I know, but it feels good to be proficient at a game I enjoy so much.

1.Finishing Super Star Wars
2. Finishing all three Super Mario Land games for the Game Boy back in the day (unfortunately, I don't own any of them anymore)

I'm not sure I'll ever play a Sonic game, again.

Let's just put it this way...Sonic + (edit) x youthful stupidity = disaster.

Ah, a third one to add to my crowing achievements on that list,

3. Finding the right formula to beat 'Oregon Trail' in record time and impress all the other kids when I was in the grades.

Yeah, I know it isn't a hard game, but with all the kids who couldn't beat the thing before all their family died, I gained a lot of cool points for being able to rocket right through that stupid game on grueling pace without resting once (usually I had only one family member left at the end though.
