Vader vs. Kenobi Reimagined [A New Hope / "Scene 38 Reimagined"] – Release

I agree it looks great for the most part - some shots look really weird but it’s a fun piece! I plan of editing it into a version of ANH for sure!

There are parts of it that just look bad, like all of the force powers, those would need to be fixed. Also my wife says it’s too fast, and in some places it is. It’s like so close to working

I agree, I think in theory it’s a great idea, but the execution needs some work. Kudos to these guys doing it, but it just feels not professional in places. I think it’s too fan boy looking. If it was a little more conservative it think it would be perfect and would integrate a bit better with the surrounding footage.

I like some of this a lot, and I dislike some of it.

If I were doing a fanedit of ANH, I think I might use some of this footage, but probably not all of it. Either way, it does make this battle feel a lot fresher and more like what we would expect from these two characters.

I would definitely strip out this music though and replace it with John Williams.

It’s a neat idea, but it looked downright absurd. I don’t buy for one second that I’m seeing an old Alec Guinness sword fighting. And as others have said, it doesn’t match the look of the film at all.

The camera moves, cinematography, lighting, color grade, editing, costumes, etc. are so different that it would be extremely jarring to include this in any edit, imo. Perhaps someone could find a way to squeeze in a few quick shots, but it’d be tricky to match the surrounding footage.

Personally it is unusable for any edits. It is jarring since it doesn’t match the rest of the scenes surrounding it. Fun idea and is neat in aspects, but it is a standalone thing.

I mean, props to them I guess for the effort, but if you edited this into ANH it’d look laughably out of place.

I was going to post something, but DominicCobb sums it up. It’s a great fan film with nothing wrong with it at all. But reincorporating it into ANH would feel very wrong. And it’s perfectly fine for that not to be their intent with it.

Author

A) It doesn’t fit with the surrounding film
B) The effects are poor
C) The sound effects have no OOMPH
D) The choreography is both non-functional and incongruent with ANH, the Prequels, and the characters portrayed.

Not that I could do a better job, but it’s not very impressive.

I like it - I like it a lot.
Obi Wan moves pretty fast when he cuts down the cantina guys, this almost all works for me. I think it was really creative and just a lot of fun. The only part that really didn’t work for me was some of the dubbing of lines, sometimes less is more.

I think some of it could easily fit into A New Hope. Definitely not all of it, but could easily cherry-pick a few shots to extend/spice up the fight. Would love to see some people at least attempt it.

JEDIT: Everything from 1:12-2:43 and 4:54-5:14 are just fine. They need some touch up here and there though.

Vader throwing a punch seems pretty low even for a Sith. Technically impressive though!

While putting it in ANH wholesale would make it look ridiculously out of place for so many reasons, I think there’s some great material in there that would make for a solid improvement. Maybe I’ll try my hand at it in a bit. I’m definitely going to eventually.

Yeah, this was a cool piece of work and everything… but the comments section is just too much as always.

“Wow… this reignited my love for Star Wars!”
“OMG, this is better than everything Disney does!”
“They should make a new Special Edition just to add this!”

The colossal amount of stupidity, argh… it’s making my face hurt, please make it stop!

This. If Disney were to do anything like this then fans would hate it for sacrilege. But when fans* do it, it’s an inspiration and deserves to be made canon, and of course it’s 3000x better than all of Disney’s stuff combined. I love this re imagining as well, but people need to calm down. My only real critique for this is for them to cover new Ben’s face with the hood more and not rely on tracking Alec’s face on top.

I don’t think the creator of this fan film intended it to be really put back into a full edit. It’s obvious it doesn’t match the original footage at all in every single way possible. It’s called “Scene 38 reimagined”, not “Scene 38 Replacement”. It’s fun as it is though, and it’s exactly was it was meant to be I believe.

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

I’ll be honest, that’s actually not half bad.

There ARE some shots in here that could be used. Obviously using the entire sequence might feel out of place (mainly just because of some choices made with regards to camera work and mediocre effects). However, using some of it sparingly looks decent, I won’t lie.

This is a promising start. Like I said, much of it is usable. You just need to adjust the contrast and grain or something as well as the speed to make it match.
