I have the 2000 VCD releases of the SE Trilogy, on each CD if I copy the .dat file to my computer and rename it .mpg I can play them right on my PC as mpeg files, then I can use a program (like tmpeg) to merge the file from disc one and disc two of each movie back into one file. I suppose from that point it would take nothing more than converting the mpeg file to mpeg-2 and authoring it onto a DVD, then you will have a nice overly poor quality version of the 1997 SE on DVD. I am not sure if every VCD works with the renaming the .dats to .mpg but I know it works on my trilogy set.

I'm pretty sure you don't even need to do that. MPEG-1 video is legal for DVD-Video, IIRC. It will need encoding to a lower bitrate if you want to get it all on a SL disc, however. If you did pass it through an MPEG-2 encoder, it could probably preserve all the visual data and lower the filesize - just set the bitrate to 8000kbps because it will never be able to reach that without padding.

Just to have it all on one disc instead of 6.

Darth Editious is right Mpeg 1 can be authored to dvd. I've seen Asian Bootlegs that were done this way. I've also seen tutorials on how to do it in the past. But could that really be any better than a vhs capture of the 1997 SE. I never really messed around with VCD much does anyone know how it compares to VHS.

Lots of blockiness in patches of the same colour, ie blue sky seems to cause it lots of problems. Looks very soft to my eyes to.

The VCDs are pretty bad quality. In some ways a VHS transfer might look better, even though VCD is suppose to be better quality it is extremly blocky. Hmm, is the VCD version of Episode 1 the same as the VHS? Is there any laser disc --> DVD transfer of Episode 1 that does not have any of the added scenes from the DVD. I would like a theatrical release of it, if it exists.

There is an Asian bootleg of Ep 1 on DVD from Laserdisc as well as a recent transfer done by a member of this forum of the same Laserdisc.

There is also the TB Release of Ep 1 which is a Scandanavian DVB broadcast captured to DVD. I uploaded a few screenshots and a video clip in this thread.

I am not aware of any Ep 1 VHS or VCD captures.

Ah, don't really care about VCD or VHS transfer, just the best quality theatrical episode 1 possible. Sounds like there are some halfway decent ones out there, I'll keep my eyes out for that one.

Yes I have. Just with the SE vcds.

PS I should be back in action after this month. Moving, getting dumbed after 3 years, and working 65+ hours a week is very hard.
