Well someone else will be doing it, I'm not qualified. But I don't really want to hijack Jay's gig here with a discussion of my restoration. I also didn't really see the need for a forum discussing the OT/PT stuff - there's more than enough of that here. What I wanted was to set up a discussion of my restoration in particular, so people could weigh in with questions, or comments.
To be honest, in the few days the site's been up, I've gotten about 1000 emails to that effect, so it looks like the forum might be helpful. I've linked to this site because I think Jay's the man, and I always appreciated this place, but I wouldn't feel right usurping it without his blessing. If he wants to setup a forum thread here for my restoration, that's great, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Since it was all the same hallway, you can learn to recognize the wall panel patterns, but once you do, you can never "unsee" it... the whole thing starts to look silly. I wouldn't recommend it.
Boy, you're not a-kiddin'. I'll never get that out of my head, now. And I got that just from quickly looking over that map and screenshots.

Especially since they aren't being released commercially anywhere else. It is probably "technically" against the law, but so is loaning copies of your movies to others, and even backing up your own stuff now. As is distributing anything that is no longer in production, but still has the copyright on it, since they extended that to 75 years. Which is another whole argument in and of itself, but still quite plainly crap.
And actually, with the new laws, ripping your own CDs to MP3s, and never giving them to anyone, is now illegal. Making mixed CDs from your own collections is now illegal. All those mixed tapes that we used to make for our families and girlfriends are now technically illegal. I no longer consider that to be a legitimate test of whether something is "right" or "wrong."

the Alien 3 SE has the old fox logo remastered quite pristinely. Since that logo fades out on Star Wars faster than it does for Alien 3 (The music also does something weird) you'd have to mix together the fanfare and manually fade out the image of the Logo--but if you were looking for a very clean 2.35:1 version of the old logo, it's on the Alien 3 SE

I like that you have that shirt availible. Did you use a commercially ready font or was that a Star Wars font? I only as because you want to AT ALL COSTS avoid all possibilities of copyright troubles.
Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see it.
Also, if it wouldn't too much trouble..could you use your technology and skill to exume the scene ' And you call yourselves human' and 'If my blade should find it's mark..." from Empire of Dreams and showcase them to us as if they were in the original films? Don't put them in it, I just was hoping to see them as finished product quality.

Why doesn't someone who has this disc cap the image and show it to us. That would end the debate right there.
I just checked the Down With Love disc, and it is actually a hybrid. They took the old image, updated it with clearer, new spotlights and add 'A Newscorp Company'. So if you were wanting to blend the new and old, like you said on your website Mike, this may be an avenue.

As for your site, Mike..that R2 CGI stuff is amazing. If you did that yourself, I am VERY VERY impressed. If only you would do a CGI Vader, the possibility for deleted scenes would be endless. Plus, you'd be able to make Vader do whatever he wants.

Anyways, I was curious about the modified component video out being used on your laserdisc player. Since LD is a composite format, and a lot of the video information has been irretrievably lost when converted to this format (luminance, etc.), I'm wondering what kind of difference your connection makes compared to the composite and/or S-video connections. I'm sure it's better, but do you have any screenshots for comparison?
I ask because I know laserman has an LD player with RGB output, and he's seen a tremendous difference (though again, there are no screenshots.)

Your assertion that LD is a composite format is incorrect. Laserdisc is a storage medium, not a format. Laserdisc stores the video format, in our case, NTSC, which may be input or output using a variety of methods, such as component (RGB or YUV), composite, or C/Y (S-Video). The same video signal decoded 3 different ways will wield 3 different results, in this case, superior sharpness and chrominance when delivered via component outputs.

Let me restate my question, then. Using S-video from LD players usually doesn't give better results than that from the composite output, generally because the S-video comb filter in current display devices outperforms the older comb filters in the LD players. I'm curious to know how the component-mod in your player compares to the eventual component signal that would eventually be derived from the composite connection. Does it somehow utilize the component-video circuitry already in the 91, or is it a separate device altogether?

Ah, ok... it's a custom bit of electronics that to the best of my understanding (I'm not the engineer) is inserted in place of the component circuitry which ships with the 91, which apparently sucks. My engineer explained it at lengths before he built it (and a few others for other components) and I know it has stuff from Faroujda and Crystal Vision in it. What I DO know is that when they were first upgraded a few years ago, we went through a bunch of comparison tests, and the results were obviously better...
