Total Recall: test clip with BD, LD, ColourLikeFBF and ColourMatch (43MB) - ATTENTION: CONTAINS NUDITY - DOWNLOAD AT YOUR RISK! (^^,)

and, without being too "salty", I admit I don't like very much the Mind Bending color grading - even if, after The Matrix BD, this is *almost* good...

That Total Recall clip is NSFW.  I've never hit cmd+w so quickly. ;)

lol

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Oh it's cool, I caught a glimpse.

A nice treat on a mundane day. :)

Color grading is different, but which is the most similar to theatrical version, in your opinions? Of course, the latest version will proclaim itself as the "one with the right color grading... supervised by... using the best..." blah blah blah, but we all know this marketing lingo, so...

Honestly and not meaning to be a pain in the ass I think its somewhere in the middle

Ugh, at this point for me it's not even about the "proper" color timing, it's about which is the most satisfying to look at. And by that I mean for the movies I grew up with it's whichever release looks and sounds the closest to how it looked and sounded when I was a kid. In this case, the the new 4k looks leaps and bounds better than the 2007 BD just from color timing alone.

Without a source print or negative to compare it with, the 4K does look like the best presentation overall.  The MGM BD was an upscale from a 720p source and the Criterion DVD was from an SD transfer with a more restricted color range.

There is more detail in the 4K transfer, and I find the colors much more appealing. The bluer image on the 2007 disc looks rather ugly by comparison.

Fleshtones in particular look much more natural in the 4K transfer, while everybody on the 2007 disc has a greenish complexion that looks vaguely Vulcan.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

“You don't do ‘Star Wars’ in Dobly.”

I watched the new BD last night and it's more than fine. No question is ko's the old release, sometimes brutally. I have no reason to want or desire any additional tinkering. They did the film justice.

How's the audio?

 Are you sure about that?

And what is up with the x rated scenes?

It looks like the footage sourced for those excised scenes were not from the original negative. In the older transfers, it looks as though they lowered the gamma in those shots to hide the low-quality. In the newer transfer they raised the levels to better integrate with the surrounding footage, but with the unfortunate side-effect of seeing all of the warts.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

to paraphrase the old latin adage, in media stat virtus...

Using the caps-a-holic screenshot comparison, I took both the old (UK) and new (US 4K) pictures; I ColourMatch'ed the new one using the old one as reference, and overlaid it to the untouched new one; here you are the results - top old, middle overlaid, bottome new:

As good as it is going to get for this release. It's limited by the way in which the audio was originally recorded. I'd say this is the best I have ever heard it sound and yes, I once owned the Criterion laserdisc set.

Screening now. Some subtle differences from the Criterion LD. Never heard it in 5.1 before. Anyone wanna rip the PCM and sync?

I have the LD and a player but no way to rip the track.

It looks terrifc to me. Very filmic. Looks like an 80s movie. That's a good thing.

I think it could look a little better still, but that's just me. I am happy with it, as I hated the previous releases, except for the old Orion DVD release and Criterion LD/DVD.

I don't like the 5.1 one though, it sounds too fake and flat in my opinion. The stereo track on the Criterion sounds slightly more aggressive in parts, and there are other parts that sound clearer. For example, when we are introduced to ED-209 at the start, there is more of a electrical humming/buzz to ED-209 on the stereo mixes than in 5.1.

I'd really love to have either the Criterion LD or DVD PCM soundtrack sync with the new BD (and having both to compare would be out of this world).

I just can't stand remixes anymore, they just never sound as good as the original audio.

I have the DVD, I had forgotten about that! To the bluray ripper!

What about the mix between the two editions? I'd like some feedback, as I'm thinking about a project - of course, along with the Criterion laserdisc soundtrack, plus - if available - Orion laserdisc and other from previous DVD releases...

Bloody knew it, the DVD was AC-3 not PCM :(

I honestly think the transfer is great.  My idea would be to sync it to PCM and cut that MGM logo off the head.  :)
