Update: Blade Runner Dvd

It looks like the dvd that is going to be released this sept will just be a disc that is really just designed to update the original Snapper case release (one of Warner's first EVER releases on DVD back in 1997) in the meantime. This is a single-disc release, with no new extras, but you'll be pleased to know that the video has been completely remastered with a brand new anamorphic widescreen film transfer.

Awesome-o for the new transfer. I won't be getting this one, i'll wait for the "ultimate/mega/super/deluxe/gizz dropping version that'll hit next year. I might give it a rent tho.

Hey look, a bear!

Of course there will also be the eventual HD-DVD/Blu-Ray release. My wallet continues to weep....

The Alien Quadrilogy (That isn't a word, is it?), The upcoming Superman releases, the Blade Runner boxed set. Is anyone at Lucasfilm taking notes?

You're right; of course plenty of people think it is actually a word after Fox marketing department made it up. The real word is tetralogy. Quadrilogy 'seems' right, but it is a mix of Greek and Latin; duology, trilogy and tetralogy being Greek, quadri being Latin. Of course it may end up being a real word if it remains in usage; 'television' is a similar Greek/Latin combination.

While just Googling some of that info I found this humorous quote:

Television? The word is half Greek, half Latin. No good can come of it.

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

SO, THAT'S WHY IT ALWAYS LOOKS LIKE YOU WET YOUR PANTS.

Actually, it looks more like explosive diarrhea, but that's beside the point.

Before the big Star Wars box. Hmm. Is anyone in Lucasfilm's marketing department taking notes? I've only seen the DC of BR (a masterpiece, in my opinion), so I'll definitely get this.

Why didn't they just call it the Alien boxed set? Ah, well. It doesn't really matter. It's a kick-ass set that presents both versions of all four movie in crisp anamorphic widescreen (athough I wish Cameron had supervised a new transfer of Aliens, and The Abyss while he's at it) and booming 5.1 surround sound interpolated from the original six-track with a fantastic plethora of extras for a reasonable price. I suppose complaining about a made up word is nitpicking.

Well, they could've called it The Alien Legacy, but they'd already used that title for the first boxed set. As for the Aliens transfer, I don't know why so many people have a problem with it. Cameron himself has said that it was meant to be grainy, and I found it to be very faithful to the theatrical experience. Digitally removing the grain from Aliens would be like cleaning up the "archive" footage in Woody Allen's Zelig, or transferring O Brother, Where Art Thou directly from the camera negative; it would go against the director's wishes. Just my two cents

As the transfer is anamorphic and looks very good to me, I don't take an issue with it. Once, I would hear the director/producer/writer's intentions and ask no more questions. However, in light of things like the SEs and the music replacement issue on the Quantum Leap and Northern Exposure DVDs which are there because the creators of the show did not want to pay for the rights to the music, I've come to feel that their word shouldn't deprive me of my preferred viewing experience. I agree, in the case of Aliens, because despite the high-tech storyline, there was an obviously guerilla quality to it (a strange phase in Cameron's career between the offbeat and indie-esque The Terminator and the slick glossy spectalcles like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, True Lies, and especially Titanic, all of which drip Hollywood style from every pore) and grain enhaces that (can anyone say Zulu?). I wish he's supervise an an anamorphic version of The Abyss, though. Ah, well. I'm sure we'll see one someday.

I'm not holding my breath. The non-anamorphic has been out in at least 3 different incarnations.

All of which were taken from the same master, correct? I think that, with him back in the chair, they'll do one to put "from James Cameron, director the action-packed Hollywood Blockbuster _____ ______." Fox knows an anamorphic release would sell. I'm sure that we'll see one eventually. But maybe I'm wrong.

Cameron has overseen each transfer. He prefers the non-anamorphic (though not because it's non-anamorphic.)

Interesting. I wonder if it would be possible to convert his preffered transfer into an anamorphic release without messing it up.
