I’ve been toying around with removing the superweapon aspect of Force Awakens altogether. Hopefully I can get something working : )

I’m excited. An edit like this is something TFA needs.

How do you plan on getting Han, Finn, and Chewie on Starkiller/Ilum? There’s the “I’m just here to save Rey” thing, but they also still have a mission.

The First Order havent fully revealed themselves to the galaxy, and its in the Resistance’s best interest to destroy them before they deploy. The oscillator is the power system for the base and destroying it would blow up the base, which would cripple the First Order. Maybe the mining of the planet could be used to imply that the planet’s the source of all the Star Destroyers also.

Perhaps the scene where the Hosnian system is destroyed could be recontectualized to be an attack from a First Order Dreadnaught.

I could certainly see that working.

Also, woah… Those two images… So good!

Snooker, that’s pretty cool!

I haven’t put a lot of thought into TFA lately because of TROS, but when I think about of fan editing it, I also have felt the urge to remove the super weapon aspect of the base.

Those images are cool! I just figured one could just totally replace the planet with a regular ice planet, but the big canyon is a cool trait that sets it apart from other worlds. Maybe in scenes, like Rey scaling the walls of the base, you could add factory noises, like the droid factory on Geonosis, to imply there is some construction going on offscreen.

I think the idea I had was to make Han and Finn go to the Base to find the other half of the map to Luke (to keep the third act focused on the macguffin). The “oscillator” would be a planetary tractor beam they have to destroy in order for them to escape. And then you would cut it in a way so the planet doesn’t blow up.

But I think what you have in mind would require less changes. If you implied the planet is being mined to build a fleet, perhaps the sun-draining aspect could be kept to imply it is like the Star Forge.

Anyway, I’ve thought about this a lot if you need some help brainstorming ways to make this work!

Star-Forge, star-destroyer factory…
Might as well make Starkiller and Exegol the same planet 😉

Maybe the mining of the planet could be used to imply that the planet’s the source of all the Star Destroyers also.

So is that why you’re leaving the hollowed out parts? 'Cause personally I would just make it an unaltered Ilum, no mass mining involved.

Perhaps the scene where the Hosnian system is destroyed could be recontectualized to be an attack from a First Order Dreadnaught.

I’ve been saying this literally since before Dreadnoughts were even a thing. The fact that they are makes it all the more approachable. The fact is the destruction of the Senate is important. What isn’t is the destruction of an entire star system.

Especially because in-universe, planet destroying superweapons clearly do not friending work. Why the bad guys would try it a second time, let alone a third time, let alone a fourth time, is beyond me.

How about have the Dreadnought be the Supremacy instead?

That would probably open another plothole about why couldn’t the Supremacy just obliterate the Resistance fleet from a distance (assuming the Supremacy in this version would have weaponry similar to what a Mandator Dreadnought’s). The original chase sequence in TLJ is already headscratching enough (did the First Order run off of dreadnoughts?), it might be better to not muddy the waters any further.

The Mandator Dreadnought destroying the Republic HQ could be more feasible and leave less questions hanging.

I think making Starkiller base into a hollowed out Ilum and having the Senate be destroyed by a Dreadnought would probably work, and it would make Poe’s Dreadnought bombing mean a little bit more in TLJ.

Oh right, he destroys it at the start of the film. Hope that wouldn’t be too anti-climactic after a whole film of build-up. I guess they did the same thing with Dooku and it turned out okay.

Here’s kind of a proof of concept of the Dreadnaught destroying the Senate. I don’t know where in the movie this would fit, but i sure am making shots lol.

That looks pretty good!

You could add the Dreadnought jumping in without too much trouble (probably just cropping out or rotating out the D’Qar rings at the start of that shot).

Also color-correct(?) the Dreadnought to fit in with the other Star Destroyers in The Force Awakens and make it less obviously from The Last Jedi.

I kind of don’t want a full shot of the Dreadnought and to save the ‘reveal’ for TLJ

Pretty cool to see this idea actually materialize! I wonder if you could use a shot of the dreadnought bridge in TLJ instead of using the shot of the Starkiller Base control room.

Regarding where it could go in the movie, I could share what I had in mind with this idea and see if it sparks any ideas for you.

I originally had this idea that when we first see Starkiller Base from space, we would also see a large First Order fleet in orbit. So dozens of tiny specs of distant Star Destroyers. Later, Hux gives his speech and then we see the fleet jump away into hyperspace. When Black Squadron is attacking Starkiller Base, we could hear an off-screen pilot wonder where their fleet is, having expected much more resistance. Then, during the climax we could cut to Hosnian Prime, where we see the First Order fleet jump out of hyperspace and engage the Republic Fleet. During the chaos of the battle, we see three dreadnoughts jump out of hyperspace and fire upon the Capital. I figured three dreadnoughts firing six rounds total would justify why the red blast seems to fill the entire sky as it approaches the senators on the ground.

With that in mind, I wonder if you could have three dreadnoughts appear in the sky above Hosnian Prime, rather than just one. Or even more ships to imply a big First Order fleet showed up. Maybe in the close up shot of the cannons firing, we could see other cannon blasts in the background flying down past the dreadnought.
I don’t think all of this is really necessary, but it might pack more punch if more than one ship was firing down on the city.

I do like how you managed to make a longer shot of the city with a dark night sky. If you did add a larger fleet to appear in the sky, it could be cool to see them firing at Republic ships that might also be in space. Imply that a battle begins and First Order will also destroy their “cherished fleet”.

Anyway, what you have so far is really cool to see!

You could crop out the right side of that arrival shot. Depending on how tight you do it, you could have a smallish Destroyer on screen in the upper left corner and then see a chunk of huge ship just pop into frame. Then it pans down to the (left) cannon dropping into firing position. Nice it have in one shot.

Cropping it (and maybe horizontally flipping it as well) save the wide shot original for TLJ and takes care of your ‘rings of DQar’ problem too.

Just a thought!

I feel like you could definitely repurpose the destruction of Kijimi since a lot of TROS edits remove that scene. But I haven’t seen that scene in like a year so I’m not sure.

Was curious if anyone had seen this yet? https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/ladfr3/darth_jarjar_by_kevin_cassidy/

This person did an absolutely amazing job at a Darth Jar Jar fan art. If we could put this head onto dark rey, we could have an awesome darth Jar Jar shot, maybe even put him in the Snoke tanks? This could be used as a subtle way to tie in the prequels/plagueis/the Darth Jar Jar fan theory.

I really think George wanted the dark side equivalent of the Yoda character, and that was supposed to be Jar Jar.

Scene test!

Now, I really don’t know how to handle the Resistance briefing scene. All I’ve managed to do is change Poe’s line from “Lower the shield, destroy that oscillator, and blow up their big gun” to “…blow up their base”
