“Centralists” is definitely a more accurate term. I don’t know what were they thinking when they went with “centrists” which is a different kind of political posture IRL.

For any version that keeps Starkiller Base, it should be stated that the First Order has fully seceded from the New Republic, becoming an independent state (because it could feel strange having the FO going from wanting to control the Republic to just go and destroy the Republic).

What about Centralists? Is that better?

Yes.

General reminder that Mandolorian season 2 is coming out in one month and will have a whole new host of continuity changes.

It would, and in some fanedit that involves these recontextualization would be nice to also include a change to Mando S2.

Maybe they thought that since this is an entirely different universe, the terminology could be justified in being completely different? Even so, it clearly didn’t work.

It could be a Taiwan/China situation. The civil war has kinda cooled down, and both sides sort of operate as separate entities despite claiming to be the only true government in control of the galaxy., with one entity having the Trump card of controlling Coruscant/Hosnian/whatever, that obviously being Leia’s faction, now becoming the Resistance. They make a ballsy power play and destroy the only thing the Resistance has going for them.

I don’t think it makes a ton of sense for the more pro-Republic faction to be the one seceding, though.

I’m a fan of them re-appropriating Imperial assets.

Remember how, after The Force Awakens came out, some people had a theory that Rey’s force abilities were psychometric (like Cal Kestis or Quinlan Vos), and that’s how she’s so good at lightsaber combat? What if we lean into that by adding even more force visions? Like, maybe the entire opening scene of TFA could be told in a flashback when she first meets BB-8.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

That could be cool, much better than inheriting force powers from evil granddaddy…

This could make an interesting concept. It may explain the vision Rey experiences after touching Anakin’s lightsaber, and her “This dagger has done horrible things” remark upon holding Ochi’s blade.

Heres my idea that would change both the originals and the sequels- DON’T KILL OFF DARTH VADER in Return of the Jedi. 😮 He would still throw the emperor down the shaft and turn good, but he doesn’t take his mask off. Then have him appear in the SEQUELS using other james earl jones dialogue and other footage. Then finally in Episode 9 he would kill the Emperor again and Luke (who would also have to survive, unless we can somehow make it Ben there too) takes his mask off. That way the prophecy thing is kept, Anakin has years to be redeemed, and Sebastian Shaw would then be the right age to play Anakin as an old man. I don’t know maybe this is too much, i was thinking about doing this in my 3 in one but i also don’t want to ruin Reys arc and Lukes arc. What would be so nice and beautiful would be Rey, Ben, Leia, Luke and Anakin, the whole skywalker family all against Palpatine and all not as ghosts but alive, but I don’t know if this is possible.

A bit of a late quote - I did think the ST would have worked better if Anakin had been redeemed by Luke’s death in ROTJ - and had then gone to live in exile. With no Jedi to guide him Ben Solo becomes Kylo Ren (who idolises the image of Vader) - and the wayward force sensitive turns to the long lost Jedi Anakin Skywalker for training.

Learning the truth of Anakin’s redemption would seed doubt in Kylo Ren who ultimately is himself redeemed.

Another nugget - what if Rey is tutored initally in dreams by Ghost Anakin. It’d help bridge her rapid jump to super-Jedi from literally nowhere.

I’d also love to somehow retool the James Earl Jones’ “REMEMBER…” speech from the lion king to lecture Luke (although why would he have THAT voice?). It’d help bring Anakin’s story full circle if he is then teaching Luke from beyond the OT.

Concept for my previous idea:

  1. Open on Rey to establish her as POV character
  2. Random vision of the Star Destroyer crash to establish her power
  3. Partial vision of BB-8’s backstory so that the mystery is in the other direction

I really dig it. Especially the sound effects. I would probably intercut more of the massacre over Poe’s lines like how you did the star destroyer flashback.

Unrelated, here’s my pretty useless pitch for anybody who wants to try. I wanted to know if anybody has the super ability to rotoscope Kylo’s crossblades out of everytime he ignites his saber, and then the moment you actually see them ignite in the film is the shot from the first teaser in the forest that they removed. For people that watch VII for the first time without seeing the trailers, they see the crossblades from the get go and think “oh cool…” but the way it was presented to us in the trailer was this huge thing akin to Maul’s double lightsaber. I thought it’d be cooler, but again it’s an almost pointless edit.

Not a bad idea, actually. Not sure if there’s a good in-universe reason for it, though.

Is it just me or does Snoke’s portrayal in TFA not at all align with his portrayal in TLJ? I guess on first viewing it makes his death more shocking when he’s set up as dark and mysterious, but the minute you meet him in TLJ that’s all gone as he’s wearing lavish gold robes. I feel like his TFA appearance ought to be changed to reflect that but it’s probably beyond our abilities.

Yep. TFA Snoke is not TLJ Snoke. They’re two different characters by two different director/writers.

Since the character was made pointless overall, massive changes need to be made to either make them match. Problem is that the TLJ portrayal makes him out to be a joke, so that’s very very hard to reconcile. You’d have to heavily re-structure the entire pacing of TLJ and incorporate ROS’s aspects too.

You could just add some effects to make Snoke’s hologram harder to see. Make it blue instead of photorealistic. It could be faint, and the hologram itself could be very glitchy. Just obscure his appearance more in TFA, so TLJ can be our first good look at him. This would just require some masking around foreground subjects (like Kylo and Hux), and apply multiple effects over the Snoke hologram. Perhaps even distort his voice more.

That would only further build up the mystery surrounding him.

Is there any context in which it would make sense to have Palpatine as the giant hologram?

Author
Time

I thought you were trying to make Snoke’s appearance between films more consistent? I was just suggesting that it would be easier, fx-wise, to just obscure the inconsistencies. I guess you mean his personality. Tbh, I feel like he barely has much of one in TFA.

Author
Time

I guess you mean his personality.

Nono, I just mean visually.

I think changing the flamboyant gold robes to black would go along way.

I was thinking the complete opposite. I’d make his robes in TFA bright purple, to match his flamboyant appearance in TLJ.

Yeah, this would contribute to further distancing Snoke from a Palpatine archetype and maybe retcon a connection between him and the over-the-top garments of the Imperial counselors in ROTJ.

I really think Snoke ought to be an eccentric ex-senator with a fascination for the Dark Side.

Author
Time

Since his robes are already dark, it would be hard to recolor them to something brighter. At the same time, it would be a pain in the ass to recolor the golden robes and the masking not be noticeable. I do like the golden robes because it separates Snoke from other baddies, but giving the hologram of Snoke different colored robes would be hard, IMO.

Author
Time

I don’t feel like this is a huge deal, Palpatine was in multiple colours of robes… it’s not like everyone can only wear one outfit for their entire lives, in fact just about every character changes clothes between movies. The personality and portrayal felt consistent to me, even with the twist that he dies in TLJ.

Not sure what the fuss is all about.

That could work.

Even a rogue clone that was doing its own thing would’ve been more interesting than what we got.

Before Abrams retconned himself, he was a dark power that Palpatine felt drawn to… only to be betrayed by his pupil that would become the big bad (Kylo). Abrams should have cared less about Reddit fan theories and complaints and focused on telling a story.

I still think Palpatine being the ultimate evil of the ST was the way to go.

They had the perfect opportunity in one small scene to fix all the complaints about Snoke AND also fit the storyline: SOLO. Instead of Maul being the criminal empire leader cameo, just have a younger (unscarred, too) Snoke.

One scene explains where Snoke was during the OT, where he got his power/money, why he dresses in an ostentatious glittering robe (he’s a wealthy crimelord, not a sith lord), where he got obsessed with the Solo family, and thematically wraps up his role in the cycle of revenge.
