Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 10

Probably, although it might be best to see how the Knights of Ren are portrayed in TROS, and if the lightsaber additions can be carried over into that film as well.

Author

Of course. Always wait for the conclusion before editing to see where it all goes.

I expect this page to boom once TROS comes out. As it stands we really don’t know what the overarching story/theme/impact is for the ST. How much will TROS rely upon TLJ? That will affect how much is cut/altered. What new twists will TROS give us? That could be moved up to other films, and radically change their stories. There is so much in the air- can only imagine this was what it was like back in the OT’s day.

Just without the editing. And the internet. And oh, digital media.

Yes, everyone will finally have a full picture with, including the people behind Darths and Droids, who are supposed to start their ST adaptation once it’s concluded. I still need to read their version of the OT. But that’s getting off topic. Point is i agree that this will be a big moment in the ST editing scene.

A few ideas I have had I don’t know how workable but whatevz
1 Rose Finn and Rey’s escape
1a for any editor looking to edit rose and Finn out, It would be cool if the shuttle that scrapes through the big ass door was somehow rey. Matte out Finns hands in the crashed shuttle have rey saying dont shoot or something. That would explain how she got off snokes ship also. Because it’s not like the falcon docked with the blowing up ship and picked her up… this isn’t Aliens
1b The above also sets up Chewie alone shooting tie fighters, just have to matt out rey or find a shot of just chewie, zoom in or what have you. Then he finally gets a chance to do something without being a sidekick. Han is gone but he can handle it.

1c the plot does not need the tracking device device. To get where the rebels are is luck rey is going after Kylo the resistance just happened to be there.

2 Better Luke Death - and not lifting rocks…
I will start by saying Lukes death is a massacre, no wait; it’s not, he just has a force heart attack or something pfffhhhh…
He should go out ala obi wan kenobi
And say see you around kid and have Kylo slash and a robe drop. He died saving them it would be sweet. Leave the box moving when he sits on it, leave the atats shoot at him we have seen Vader absorb Hand blaster shots, Kylo freeze a laze blast and it would be like the iconic scene in the Dark Empire comic when He does the same thing.

2b Also if you had rey at the base a doctor shot of her looking at Lukes sacrifice interpolated with poe talking to Finn about it being a distraction would be cool. AND then the walk out of the cave to the melinnium falcon
2c also also maybe a cgi x wing In the distance, Luke pulled the xwing out of the water and used the force or intercepted a distress signal or contacted chewie or something to find them, nor as important how just the point that he is real.

3 Starkiller base
3a. I think it would be a good idea to set up in the crawl or anywhere that Starkiller base is built on Jeddah or however you spell it, that’s where the kyber is, it’s powered by the planet not a stupid star. And it would link to Rouge one in a good way.
3b That being said I dislike the Starkiller base completely, If I ever get a better computer that could handle it I would make a two in one TFA and TLJ that edits the entire thing out, rey is captured Han goes to save her gets killed they leave on the falcon, Finn is never injured
4 Two in one ideas
as for the two in one movie they are just tracking the falcon use the deleted scene of Kylo on the falcon, if he has his helmet on it would be cool to voice over set the device or something to set it up. The problem is that doesn’t set up how they track them after they attack the base. Maybe reuse some DJ stuff to make him out as a spy but there is maybe a better solution.
It may work to once they get to the base Kylo Flys out and when his ties hit the cruel that’s why it’s out of fuel. And also maybe that’s when the tracker gets planted.
That let’s us set up the bomber fleet and all of that as a distract from the evacuation poe says permission to blow stuff up, and then they go do it that happens during the Kylo rey fight

I know what your thinking “Damn, these is some good ideas y’all!”
I hope to discuss them so flame on!

1 Rose Finn and Rey’s escape
1a That is a good idea, much better than rey somehow boarding the falcon. Good
1b Dont think chewie alone would work, falcon needs someone in the gunner seat to shoot. Unless your suggesting that no one shoots from the falcon. Or… if you really want to put Finn in the gunner seat using footage from force awakens. But youd have to remove him from inside the base & maybe need a shot of him getting on? Its just an idea being thrown out. I dunno.
1c Not much to comment on this. Not really sure how this improves anything?

2 Yes. Should be easy to do? Just add a raising hand in a closeup shot right before the first blast hits.
2b Not sure how this improves anything ether but might be good/needed if events were rearranged.
2c Would be cool but not too fussed on it. Id be happy with him just leaving the island on the falcon & remove him from the shot of him watching the falcon fly away. If he arrived on the x-wing, how would we see him land and get out?

3 Starkiller base
3a. I like the linking of story, sequel trilogy needs it. Jedda is sand, Starkiller is snow though? Am I misunderstanding?
3b Yes to this.

4 Personally, Im thinking of having the falcon being tracked from as soon as they escape jakku and the first order follows them directly to the resistance base. This is where they meet Han, at the base, still a general. This obviously cuts a huge amount of TFA out but cut footage would be re-purposed for somewhere else.

Can I possibly throw out something else I would like to see redone? The whole beginning of TFA. As fun as it is, its completely ridiculous. Coincidence after coincidence. I dont know how to fix it but maybe others might have ideas. BB8 leaves the village, could go in any direction, 360 degrees, happens to meet Rey. Finns first mission happens to also be when they capture Poe. Finn leaves the crash site, could go in any direction, 360 degrees, happens to meet BB8 & Rey. Falcon happens to have been stolen and ends up on the planet and in the village that Reys on. Hans been looking for falcon for years and yet finds it now, when he needs to meet the heroes. Large ship that Han pulls in falcon with is now no longer needed, bad guys happen to show up to force Han to abandon it. Han has a choice to go straight to the resistance, republic or ANY of his friends and yet takes Rey to the lightsaber which he didnt even know was there.

Am I the only one that sees this as just terrible writing? I feel like im missing other coincidences.

Edit: Also, Kylo, knowing the map is in the area, takes Poe to the ship and tortures him, just so that they have to go back down to jakku. Makes no sense and is only done so that Poe and Finn can escape.

Move Starkiller Base to Return of the Jedi. Eliminate Death Star II altogether.

@DougieP
Thanks
1b I do think chewie needs his own shot
1c RemovING the tracking device helps because the whole thing is cheesy and doesn’t pay off. She’s after Kylo not the rebels.
Also helps if you are removing leia death, because then you don’t need Finn to get the ring. And remove a lot of the Finn and rose stuff. This may be more valuable to anyone doing a two in one movie as it cuts a lot of time.
2 good thought on him raising his hand. I wonder if there is a shot of him raising his hand. Luke being caporal and sacrificing himself for the others is a better end and tedeeming.
2b adding rey looking at luke would remind us that she arrived on the shuttle. But It may be problematic to not have her on the falcon because if she saw his death we would either need a reaction from her. Or even better Poe distraction dialogue could get ahead of the fight so they can run.
2c yeah an xwing in the distance I am not in love with. Maybe it is enough to recolor his looking at the xwing to night time so he can look at it right after the falcon Flys away or soon after. A good music cue and you don’t need to see him pull it out.
3a Jeddah was wastelandish but you could just figure it was an ice age caused by the DS blast
4 they usually have to set a tracker in the past. They fly straight to the base it makes sense and calls back to the original.cue On a string indeed!! Scene!! Then the sith follow them. The rebels have found find the tracker and that is why they are evacuating. It we be nice if Leia could say something like they have found us. Or maybe, the first order they’ve found us. Find Luke and bring him back. That explains why Kylo does not track them to Luke.

Also you are right too much coincidence. But I like the idea the falcon blew a hose near Han and that was the Force.

Would like to add an idea of not having a rather escape and when rey does her stuff to close the doors the right ones close, they run. Need a shot of the falcon leaving without the rathtar on it.

Or you could, you know leave it as is where it is heavily (and I mean heavily) implied to be Ilum, the planet where Jedi would go to get lightsaber crystals in the days of the Republic, as featured in TCW… I don’t see a need to link up to Rogue One anyway. This isn’t the MCU. The spinoffs aren’t setting up anything; they’re their own stories. That’s why I was baffled by people thinking Vader’s castle would show up in the ST.

Anyway, here’s the state of the uninspired planets and what could be done to remedy them (largely taken from my previous statements but centralized in one post):

Jakku: Honestly, just make this Tatooine for poetry’s sake. Just add a second sun to some scenes and voila. In fact, you don’t even need to go that far, as you could argue the second sun only shows up on certain days. Alternatively, if you want to keep the planet distinct, cacti would help.

Takodana: Oh my this one is so generic. We’ve had Yavin, Endor, and Naboo, we do not need another forest planet. While Endor is pretty distinct the other three are very similar, so I recommend making Takodana either Yavin or Naboo. I’m leaning towards Naboo, as it’s been shown to be widely inhabited, and has an abundance of water. If one were to make it distinct, the trees need to remain green due to Rey’s line, and I don’t see what else you could do with it. If anything, you should change the leaf color of Yavin, but editing the OT that way would be seen as sacrilege by most.

D’Qar: This one I think we can creative with. Add mountains to the few wide shots and suddenly you have Lothal.

Pasaana: Yet another desert. Since the film isn’t out yet, we can’t say for sure how to approach it, but I recommend making it a distinct planet from Tatooine, unless you like the idea of every film but one having Tatooine in it. Once again, cacti could be used.

And can I just say congrats to TLJ for not making this list.

Depending on if there is a lot that will set the new desert planet, Pasaana, apart from the other desert planets in the Saga, I think an interesting alternative would be to make it Jedha instead. Both planets used Wadi Rum in Jordan as their shooting location, so it already looks similar. Maybe you could add a more gloomy color grade to show how Jedha has become a bit apocalyptic after the Death Star test 30-odd years ago. Maybe huge rocks could be seen floating in orbit, or establishing shots of the planet could be altered to help reflect its damage and help make this desert planet stand apart from Tatooine, Jakku or Geonosis.

Also, making it Jedha would help tie into the ST’s theme of visiting worlds that were once holy sites for the Jedi:
Ach-To
Starkiller Bass (Ilum?)
Takodana (site of Jedi battle)

But like I said, it’s kind of too early to even consider, I had just been speculating that it might be Jedha before they revealed it to be a new world, so it was on my mind.

Off-topic, but I had a very little idea for TFA. Remember the rebel pilot doll Rey has in her AT-AT home? I think it would be interesting to give that doll a little toy lightsaber, like a screw tied to its hand that has been painted blue. Why makes this addition, of all things? I think it would be a nice visual that would help solidify that Rey has heard the stories of Luke Skywalker (in this instance, Rebel pilot Luke, like when he single-handedly brought down an AT-AT like the one Rey lives in), and Rey idolized Luke like a hero, which helps emphasize this idea that the new generation kind of represents the fans. Rey hasn’t just heard the myths of Luke and the Jedi, but she dreamed and fantasized about them.

EDIT: Also, this is a very minor thing, but what I like about Canto Bight is that although it is technically a desert planet, they have created an artificial oasis on the planet. I think it would be interesting if this could be illustrated visually in its brief establishing shot somehow. Maybe there could be little circular, clearly artificial, patches of green across the sandy planet surface. Just a little touch to make it distinct, basically, and to help get that oasis idea across.

I also think it would be interesting to try and add a familiar alien race or two to the casino sequence, whether it be with a physical mask and green screen (Bith, Rodian, Twi’Lek), a CG alien (Kaminoan, Dug, Toydarian), or just augmenting humans to look like one of the near-human aliens (Zabrak, Kiffar like Quinlan Vos, Chiss).

Since apparently Tatooine needs to be in every movie, let’s make Hoth Tatooine (wintertime, duh). Also I guess Naboo should just be Endor, and Geonosis might as well be Tatooine too.

It’s all actually one planet and whenever they go into space their just making a loop

We can replace every planet establishing shot with the ships just flying around Earth.

People once speculated that Naboo would become Dagobah by way of some kind of disaster or something.

I feel like post Death Star Jedha would have perpetually cloudy skies. It ought to look post-apocalyptic, since, you know, it is.

The Tatooine oasis thing is interesting. And I didn’t Cantonica was a desert planet, so that’s neat to know. Basically, the idea for making it Tatooine is already in place for those who want to.

Place a Sith Holocron next to Snoke on the left armrest of his throne.

You could add it to the entirely of TLJ, or at the very least his first scene with Kylo Ren. It’s a small detail that doesn’t necessarily spell out anything, but it could add an extra clue regarding Snoke.

Snoke could’ve been a dark side acolyte or enthusiast who used the knowledge of that holocron to gain his power. He could’ve been an already powerful dark sider who used the holocron to unlock new secrets. He might want to restore the Sith Order, or is just using it for his own personal gain. Or, it was left by Palpatine to manipulate others as a part of his contingency.

Still keeps him mysterious, but at the very least it gives us an onscreen source of his power for those who feel like there wasn’t enough. The desire for such an addition might change if we learn more about him in IX, but if we don’t I think it would be a pretty simple idea to implement.

While it would take more work, if you added it to all the throne room scenes, you would also get a nice bit of dualistic imagery when the Sith holocron rests on one side of Snoke, and a Jedi lightsaber rests on the other.

I like that.

There’s an upcoming book, linked below, that will describe the Skywalker Saga from “Anakin, Luke, and Rey’s point of view.”

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars_The_Skywalker_Saga

Could this book be used to create a narration for the films? For example, if we could get an “old Luke” voice actor, and have him speak lines from the book, we could create seamlessly blend the PT/OT with the ST as Luke explains to Rey the errors of the past, and why he thinks the Jedi must end.

I like the holocron idea. It’s one of those things that creates more questions than answers but in a good way. Mystery is good.

One idea I had a while back for generating mystery was labeling every film as part of the 34th saga in the opening crawl. Makes you feel like you’re seeing but a fraction of this wide universe, and makes you wonder what other grand tales there are to tell in it.

Outbound, thanks! And that is an interesting idea! You, or someone who picks up that book, could maybe report back and see if it has a format that an edit like that could use as an outline.

Exactly! It is hard to explain, but that’s basically what I was thinking too.

That is an interesting idea! It makes me think how an early draft of Star Wars referred to it as Saga I, the Star Wars. You basically could add that to the opening crawl like: Star Wars. the 34th Saga. Episode IV.

Was trying to think of ways to add more familiar aliens to the Sequel Trilogy without having to shoot any new footage. Here are some ideas:

For Maz’s Castle, I really only have one strong idea so far.

So, there is a shot from the cantina scene in ANH where Greedo faces the camera when the bartender tells Luke he can’t bring in any droids. In that shot, Greedo is on the left side of the screen, and he slowly turns back to the table he is at for the duration of the shot.

In TFA, when Maz shouts “Han Solo!”, there are three quick reaction shots of bar patrons turning to face him. In the third shot, at 0:57:45, three patrons quickly turn to camera. You could potentially rotoscope Greedo out of the original scene and put him into this one, covering up one of the two patrons sitting on the sides. Then, you could reverse the shot and speed it up slightly to have him turn to face camera like the rest. Also, you would need to recolor his costume and skin so he would be clearly seen as a different Rodian. You also might need to rescale the shot some in order to match shot to the scale of Greedo.

I think Canto Bight would be another good place to add some familiar aliens, but the ‘how’ is a little more difficult. I think one of the simplest ideas might be to take a shot of Jabba from ROTJ and add a Hutt somewhere amongst the casino-goers, which seems like an appropriate species to appear.

This clip of Canto Bight with additional deleted shots has a few shots that might work for this idea. Around the 1:36 mark, there are three brief CU shots of casino patrons that I think Jabba could be added to. I think one shot of Jabba that is usable would be when he stuffs a frog in his mouth. There might be a better option somewhere else though. You could rotoscope him out of that shot and recolor/add dinstinct features to him to help make him look like a different Hutt. You would also need to mask out parts of the foreground patrons that Jabba can’t cover up, and also maybe flip the shot in order to have Jabba facing the opposite side that he does in ROTJ.

It would be great if we could get some actual alien masks/gloves and film some quick shots in front of a green screen, but until then I think these are some potentially doable ideas that could add just a pinch of familiarity. Luckily, both of these shots are very brief, from less to a second to four or five seconds at most.

New Scene - New Republic Senate

Create establishing shot using shot of Resistance ships returning to D’Qar. Remove all the ships except troop transport. Have that ship flying toward a new planet. It is a city planet, but clearly not coruscant. Maybe you can see oceans and green earth on the sunny side, but city lights on the night side. Add other planets/moons around it. This is the Hosnian system. Otherwise you could simply have a establishing shot of a new planet, no ship needed.

Maybe you could add some New Republic ships to the space around the planet as well.

Not necessary, but could take an establishing shot of something like future Earth from one of JJ’s Stark Trek films (maybe with some tweaks) to again reestablish that this is not Coruscant.

A little trickier, but here we could take some wide shots of the Senate chamber scenes from the prequels to establish the interior. Unless we shoot new footage, we can use shots of the Trade Federation/Nemoidian delegation and the Malastare representatives from TPM, but redub them to create new dialogue regarding how the New Republic sees the First Order.

Maybe the Nemoidian feel like Leia claiming the First Order has a superweapon is nonsense, that she is a warmonger. Maybe they’re saying, “There is nothing to fear, the First Order is merely a fringe group with little real power”, for example.

Maybe the Malastare delegation wants the Republic to take action, or vice versa. Some reaction shots of Senate pods could show everyone breaking down into arguments, which could be augmented by shouting crowd soundbytes. A quick shot of Kor Sella in a pod might could be made where she is silently watching this breakdown occur. I know there is only a brief, artificial shot of her not speaking in the reinserted scene with Leia, so this might be difficult. Maybe it could just be used as a quick reaction shot between the Nemoidians and the Malastare senators, just to establish she is there.

The shots in the senate chambers could be recolored (new color grade) and flipped to help differentiate it from it’s original use in TPM. This is without shooting anything new, but it is possible new senators could be shot with the use of green screen, but this is an idea that would require no new footage. There is also the deleted footage of the Alderaan senators that could be used in some capacity. Maybe Kor Sella could be sitting next to one of them (maybe they represent some new Alderaan colony).

The good thing is, since the speaking senators are all aliens, we can redub them to really say whatever we want. So we could throw ideas around for what they could actually say, since there have been several different ideas throughout the last few years regarding which approach to take for the political situation in the new films.
