How about No Escape? Definitely underrated in my book.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Can't say I'm quite familiar with No Escape.

Like many older genre movies, I think it truly was a 'you had to be there' kind of flic. Back in the 80s, during the pre-CGI heyday of genre films, there were lots of Star Wars knock-offs and there were lots of cheesy but fun 'barbarian' style movies (which I miss!) as well as some just weird movies. These days it seems everything skewed towards a younger audience it based on a video game or comic book. Back then some 'big' films could be made that were just plain strange. And of course they don't always stack up to modern viewers. Case in point Krull. Pure cheese- but fun, silly, rousing (to a young crowd back then) action/adventure. And a neat sci-fi/fantasy blend. Great cinema? No. Does it hold a dear place in my heart like many other such genre flics? Yeah.

It just depends on the individual as to how they view movies and what they will and will not watch; for the life of me I can't get my wife to sit and watch either a black and white film or a film that *looks* dated (clothing, hairstyles, etc) and I know lots of people like that. So basically, if you can watch with an open mind, you might wanna give several of the films the people here talk about a try.

Don't forget to throw The Last Starfighter on that list as well. Grade A, 80s sci fi flick.

Krull = Awesome. I used to own the Atari game.

What about Dark City? That movie was awesome. Same goes for Starship Troopers. And Total Recall. Hard to say what's underrated really.

Very true. What does "underrated" really mean? I wouldn't consider Total Recall to be underrated. It's been given the props it deserves over and over again. Dark City I would consider underrated. It's a relatively unknown flick. Emphasis on "relatively" of course. I loved the movie. But most people I talk to have no idea that there is a film by that name even with the name actors it has.

I suppose that's underrated...when people don't know what movie you're talking about.

Everyone knows about Total Recall, but I had to pull teeth to get people to watch Dark City. They thanked me afterwards too. Saw it 3 times in the theaters. Its one of my favorites.

Let's see if I can think of some other ones...I know its not SF, but I didn't think D&D was too bad. Would've been better if they didn't get screwed.

I'll probably get flamed for this one!

I didn't see the following movie in the theater and was told by a friend that it truly sucked, but when I finally got around to watching 'The Chronicles of Riddick' on DVD I really had a good time watching it! Don't get me wrong- I'm not saying its classic cinema or anything (far from) and not saying that it doesn't have ridiculous moments to it. I really don't even care for Vin Diesel much at all... but I think I *got* what the filmmaker was trying to do. Which, harkening back to my earlier post here, was to make a modern sci-fi, 80s-style barbarian movie. Seriously- it has all the trappings of one of those cheeseball movies I loved as a kid and a tone that takes its seriously but not *seriously* seriously if you know what I mean.

I sorta had the same feeling after watching it that I did after seeing 'Buckaroo Bonzai' (one of my all-time favorite films!!!)- many general audience people didn't *get* 'BB' either... but those of us that did...

Is Return of the Jedi under-rated?
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.

Ummm... I don't even think that comes close to falling in the "underrated" category. Nor the "underappreciated" nor "undergrossing" either.

I agree with Greencapt. Chronicles of Riddick is way underrated.

It's a fun movie if you forget it's the sequel to Pitch Black.
