Since... Lincoln I suppose, every president elected every 20 years died while in office, until Ronald Reagan broke the so called "curse", by surviving that assassination attempt in 1981. Bush would be the next on the list being elected 20 years after Reagan was, but he's not dead yet. He might be re-elected and be murdered by Carrot Top with an amusing prop stabed in the heart (as I have forseen in my dreams), or maybe the curse was really be broken by Reagan and shall never repeat itself again... Or maybe Reagan DIDN'T survive, and they had someone impersonating him until now. Who? Peter Sellers.

How come Ford wasn't elected as vice president? Wasn't him Nixon's vice president?

How come Roosevelt served 3 terms, and was going for a fourth one when he died? Were those consecutive terms? Can a US president do that?

And shall we see a homosexual, or an african-american, or a woman as president of the US sometime soon? Or maybe all combined, an african-american lesbian, how's that?

Agnew was Nixon's elected VP, but he had to resign and was replaced with Ford.

When FDR was going for a fourth term, there was no limit. Now it's two terms.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

I don't know, I think the republicans would have a good chance if they supported Colin Powel for president in 2008.

yeah, come to think of it that might work.

I somehow doubt that would happen. Powell has been pissing off many Republicans lately with his willingness to say that they were wrong regarding Iraq. Democrats might welcome him with open arms, but that doesn't mean he would do it. I always felt Powell should have been the candidate in 2000. Barack Obama might be the first black pres candidate we see if the Dems continue to groom him the way they have been.

I don't think that would pan out either. Her as a VP candidate perhaps. That would be a helluva ticket for the Dems... Barack Obama as pres and Hillary Clinton as VP. A double minority ticket with big name candidates. Wow.

Actually, I'm not sure that last one is correct, otherwise I'm sure more presidents would have run for a 3rd or more terms.
(Although, on the other hand I think it was an unspoken rule set down by George Washington in his final speech).

I think he made it 4 terms because no one wanted to remove him in the middle of WW2.

Starkiller, that is correct. Presidents could run for as many terms as they wanted. Just nobody wanted to. There weren't too many presidents before FDR that really served more than one term. And many who did, did so reluctantly (Washington) or died in office (Lincoln, et al). The Constitution was amended (I believe this is in the Constitution) to not allow for any more than two terms by one person as President be they consecutive or spread out.

It's in the constitution [Amendment 22 (1951)] that a person can serve as President for a maximum of 10 years. If a president dies and has two years or less left in his term, the Vice President can serve the remaining two years plus two full terms of four years each. If there are three or four years in the first term, he can only be re-elected for one more term.
