Because the fans wanted him so bad. When Optimus was killed in the first movie, there was a huge outcry. What happened when they changed Megatron into Galvatron? Nothing much. Optimus is the Transformers. Without him, there's no movie. Having Peter Cullen do the voice is just one more thing they can do to get the fans interested. If the fans are turned on by it, they're more likely to get other people turned on to it.

Yes, I remember the outcry over Optimus being killed in the 1986 movie, but I still think having Welker back as Megatron would be better.

So no one's gonna pull this thread out of the cobwebs now that the film's actually been released?

I kicked ass indeed. The CG work was beyond impressive, the pacing was just right, the acting was fine and it was a lot funnier than I was expecting.

btw, Shia LeBouf did a pretty damn good job IMHO. His acting style is really natural. It's like they gave him a general idea of what to say and how to act and let him wing it a lot and he pulls it off perfectly.

Hey look, a bear!

Going to see it on Saturday hopefully. I really want it to be good, but I dunno . . . we'll see . . . as it were.

In the meantime, who was everyone's favorite Transformer as a child?

You'll be impressed, I was totally blown away. It is a rare occasion indeed whenever anything lives up to, or in this case exceeds, expectation.

I am the basic Optimus Prime fan. Real noble and brave with the natural leadership abilities that I have come to really respect, and hope for, in people.

I read somewhere that they really wanted to use Welker, but his voice had aged and was no longer suitable for the voice acting in the movie where people would hear it under the crystal clear systems they now have in modern theaters. He does, however, voice Megatron in the video game version of Transformers which accompanies this movie.

Definitely exceeded my expectations.

Favourite transformer as a kid. tough one, toss up between bumble bee and hotrod. I remember I had soundwave bedsheets too about 20 years ago now.

Saw it last night. Thought the movie as a whole was quite good.

**Minor Spoilers?**

The dialog and tight plot threads were a breath of fresh air, especially in an action movie. The acting was passable, and it was good to see the U.S. government and military in a fairly good light for a change. John Turturo as the Section 7 guy was great comic relief. The All-Spark story was a little weak (doesn't that thing create any good robots?).

Sam's character was well done, in spite of the usual cliched hero teen. He wasn't annoying at all, and it was good to see a teen character with parents who don't put up with their crap (for the most part).

Meagan Fox was unbelievably hot (of course you don't see the tattoos, which ruin her for me) and also not annoying.

The CG was just breathtaking, though at times during the showdown at the end it was a little difficult to know who was who. I was a little annoyed by Megatron's relative lack of screen time and also lack of ORIGINAL VOICE. That combined with the lack of Star Scream having much to do and also without original voice I was a little put off. As a first gen fan I was a little sad to not hear the voices I grew up with, and also the PC choice to not let Megatron be a gun. Also, the Constructicons...no combined Devastator??

All in all a very good experience. I've heard rumors that they've got a total of 4 in the works, so we could be looking at a nice franchise for the next 10 years or so.

I haven't seen it yet, but how was that a PC choice? They said time and again during production that all the transformations would be real size. How would Megatron possibly go from a 20' tall robot to an 8" gun? That's not PC, that's realism. The only thing they really could've done was make him a tank.

If they had made him a gun, then yeah, all the fanboys would've loved it, but everyone else would've been taken right out of the movie the moment he transformed.

Then they should have been consistent with how they applied that rule. For almost the whole last 1/2 of the film the All-Spark is almost the size of a room, then it shrank to a size that would allow Sam to carry it. Yes, you're right about it being about practicality vs politics, however in the original series Megatron is shown transforming and being wielded by bots and humans alike, changing mass as needed.

Hmm, Optimus Prime was always my favorite Autobot until the Dinobots came along (and perhaps even afterwards). He was sort of like the ultimate hero for a kid to be a fan of. In fact, I don't really know anyone who didn't think Optimus Prime was fantastic in some way. Otherwise, if I remember correctly, I think I'd have to say that Soundwave was my favorite Transformer as a child. He had such a cool design and voice. I loved the way that bird Decepticon of his looked as well.

I liked the movie a lot, but I didn't think the Transformers were in it enough. It was pretty good, but if they had toned down the military plot and replaced that with more characted building on the part of the Transformers, the film would have been classic. Having never really been into the Transformers before now, I didn't have a problem with the character designs or voices; I thought they all looked and sounded awesome. Optimus Prime is one awesome dude.

Saw it. Huge G1 fan but I recognized that this would be a good opportunity to "reinvent" the story while also sticking to certain key aspects, so i basically had let go of any sort of nostalgia and decided to just accept this as its own thing. As far as faithfulness goes it was more or less good, with most of the original series bots in there which was surprising to me, and with Optimus and his original voice it was great. But as far as the movie goes it was a bit of a stinker. I was very surprised that the best scenes were the ones with Shia Le-whatshisname; when the characters were involved and when the film actually took a minute to actually explore them it was terrific. Case in point, the scene where the kid is trying to hide the robots and a girl from his parents is not only hilarious and entertaining but brimming with the wonderful character eccentricities that make the robots endearing to us (while also presenting the absurd spectacle of giant robots roaming suburbia). They are NOT just toys, they have personality and feelings. But too often the film treated them as toys, as weapons, as spectacle, and there was way too many completely empty action scenes. Lots of explosions, lots of machine gun fire, and I found it very hard to tell what the hell was happening in any of the (many) action scenes.

Personally, I think Bay ruined what could have been a great film if they spent more time on the characters. Yeah, the robots should have had a bit more screentime, but if its just more scenes of them being shot at and smashing things then it doesn't really matter. I think its dissapointing because at times the film concentrated just on character relationships (whether human or robot) and in those moments the film really picked up, which only made the rest of the moments all the more uninspired. I also found it very hard to enjoy the action scenes on a purely superficial level because of Bay's absolutely wretched directing--i like a lot of his films and his style, but here he framed the action so closely and incoherantly that there was no communication to the audience as to what was actually happening onscreen. The robots also all looked the same--i could always tell who Optimus was because he was distinctly coloured but the robot fighting scenes, which should have been the highlighted spectacle, were just a mess beacuse it was just parts and gears flying around without any sense of what was happening. I STILL don't know how it ended--I mean i watched it but it was just shot so incoherantly that I really have no idea what happened. Bay's style is also very stale--Armageddon and Bad Boys, for example, are shot similarly, but here its just the same old things; the same music, the same sequences, the same shots, the same pomposity, the same overstated emotion; it just feels like Michael Bay on autopilot, almost like someone imitating Bay.

But I'm also glad I saw it. As pure spectacle, the notion of giant fighting robots is cool no matter the context, genre or competance of execution, and as a die hard Transformers fan it was always nice to see the references and to finally after all these years see these guys renedered in live action. I think the sequel will be much better since all the set-up stuff is done now. The original series was more science fiction while this film is more like Fast and the Furious with robots, but I like the way the ending set up a scenario that was more reminiscent of the situation depicted in the original cartoon. I went into this film expecting a dumb action blockbuster but I was secretly hoping that I would find that it was actually much more--unfortunately it was just as i expected. Okay to watch, captivating at moments where characters take center stage and not the explosions, but unfortunate that its not really worth a repeat viewing. 1986's Tranformers The Movie still stands as a million times better than this.

I thought the film was very fun. The way the story captured the original feel of the Transformers cartoon was great. Optimus Prime kicked ass once more.

If I had to pick out problems, I think that the human characters were in it a bit too much and that the CG wasn't as good as I was hoping. Still, considering what I went into the theater expecting, it was a good film.

I loved this movie. I don't think it was a very good movie but it was so much fun watching. Loved the humor, the military hardware, the action, the cars. It's been some time I had this much fun at the theatre. Now that I think about it, I love all movies Bay directed (although I didn't see bad boys (II) ).

The theatre I went to had part of the roof coming down because of very heavy rainfall or something. 9 kubic meters of concrete came falling down on the chairs (they evacuated in time). If that happened during Transformers you would have believed one of the Transformers came through the roof

And they weren't afraid that Cullen's voice had "aged" and was "no longer suitable" for voicing the character?
