Transformers The Movie: Resparked (Released) — Page 6

I watched the edit a few weeks ago, but I've been too busy to comment about it. First of all let me say that all of the edits were done with such precision that I was unable to notice where they were in the movie. I just wanted to share my thoughts.

I was glad the Bernie Mac scene was left in there. That part always cracks me up. I would say the majority of the cuts made were perfect. There are a few scenes I would have left in the movie. For example, when Sam and Mikaela are in the car for the first time, I think that whole scene works. I think Sam flexing his arm shows what a dork he is. Plus any extra screen time for FHM's hottest woman, Megan Fox should be treasured. =)

I think the problem with the part with Bumblebee "leaking" on the agent is actually the sound and not the content. It's that "BONG" sound that makes that part so bad. I think that scene could stay in the movie if a better sound was used. It just sounded so out of place with all the other great sound effects in the movie. It's not any worse that the leader of the Autobots saying, "Whoops, my bad"

I was surprised that you didn't cut the part where the government gathers all the hackers together. There is a part where one of the guys says, "that's the secretary of defense" and then the speaker says, "ladies and gentleman, the secretary of defense" I think the hackers line could be cut. We don't really need to hear that line twice. On a person note, I hate the way hackers are portrayed in movies. They always have the right software to instantly crack something in under a minute. Plus they have a nice GUI interface where they just bang on the keyboard and get instant results. Sorry a bit off topic but it's a personal pet peeve of mine.

I agree with some of the other people on the forum and don't mind the "bring the rain" line. Although I must admit all the other cuts with the military were perfect. The left cheek thing had to go. The military shouldn't be the one's providing the comic relief in the movie.

The scene with Sam's parents in the bedroom is so much better. That was such an uncomfortable scene and really slowed down the movie. You successfully removed the American Pie from Transformers.

I'm not sure why you don't like the "I'll drive, you shoot." line. I didn't think it was that bad. Plus it features Megan Fox and again any screen time with her is enjoyable.

But as I said, it's a great edit. Too bad Mr. Bay didn't have you there in the editing room before the movie was released to make this a better movie.

Just a quick little update.

I may have found an alternate source for the end speech by Optimus, and may be able to remove all or most of the Linkin Puke song at the end. I really hope this works out.

And in the meantime, I'm finishing up the motion menus, and getting ready to do a nice CCE 10-pass re-encode of TF:RS 1.1, that will be up on the Demon as TF:RS 1.2

Been pretty busy lately, so this edit and my other (ID4) are moving slowly. Should have more time to devote to them both soon.

Good to hear you're still working on it. I got those dvds you sent, but none of them except the TF:Resparked actually work with my dvd player. No idea why.

Here is a quick test of an idea I have for the end. Do you guys think that too much information is lost? I know the song is kind of cheesy, but it's the song that is playing during the voiceover from the alternate version I found.

I could also mix the beginning of the linkin puke song into the next song, but I think it would be too harsh of a transition. I kind of feel like the ending should be a little more somber, as they have lost their planet and one of their friends.

Thoughts?

Here is the original voiceover in its entirety with my notes:

With the All Spark gone [shown in the movie], we cannot return life to our planet [revealed earlier]. And fate has yielded its reward: a new world to call home [obvious]. We live among its people now, hiding in plain sight, but watching over them in secret, waiting, protecting [obvious]. I have witnessed their capacity for courage, and though we are worlds apart, like us, there's more to them than meets the eye [stated earlier in film].

(my test vid starts the voiceover here)

I am Optimus Prime, and I send this message to any surviving Autobots taking refuge among the stars. We are here. We are waiting.

The song may not be the best, but I think it works well enough. That one simple line of dialogue is more than adequate I think.

I'd be happy for a bit more of the dialgue since there's not really much else going on during it...But I have to say I am impressed with the new ending as is.

I'm making another attempt at this, that will have some of the Linkin Park song, before the vocals come in, that fades into the orchestral piece. Will post that as soon as I'm done. I might still remove a little bit of the unneeded dialogue to facilitate there being less Linkin Park. It's too bad that every channel in the 5.1 mix has that damn song all over it. There isn't even a single channel that has the entire speech louder than the music.

I may end up just making this ending a branching option (assuming that I can figure out how to do that).

Yeah, I wish there had been another song playing (or none at all) with the new dialogue that I found (it's actually a different take), but I still think it's a better piece than the Linkin Park song, if not a little too sentimental a piece.

I haven't seen this fanedit yet (can't wait!), but everything sounds awesome so far, and the cover art is brilliant.  I am a big Transformers fan being a child of the 80s, but I admit that I know little.  My biggest gripe with the movie is Starscream.  What the fuck?  I always liked how Starscream looked as if he had angel wings, but now he's a huge triangle with little stubby legs.  And why couldn't his head have been more accurate like Prime's?  Oh yeah, Megatron should have been a tank, so he could have that huge blaster cannon (which made an awesome blast sound in the cartoon).  Anyways...

I hate Linkin Fart, but I actually liked that finale song except for the heavy rock guitars in the credits (if I remember correctly).  I think your attempt at changing the song was a good try, but you lose most of a good monologue that sums up the movie well.  You could cut the small kissing shot out to fill some of that empty space.  (Plus, it somewhat doesn't go with sad music you've applied anyway, unless it's supposed to be ironic.)  Since you don't have Prime's dialogue by itself, maybe you could check out an audio book, or a version of the movie that has 6.1 or 7.1 sound.  I don't know if these versions exist.

If the soundtrack is messing with your true vision, I say "fuck it".  I was thinking that you might be able to cut and paste parts of the song and fade it out.  What I mean is, find where a measure of a song ends and paste in a previous part of the same song, so it repeats enough times that you can fade it out in the next scene.  This way you don't end up with an abrupt ending to the music when you cut something.  However, this may be impossible, because you have to worry about sound effects and dialogue getting in the way.  Maybe you could use the actual soundtrack for this instead.

I've used Sony Vegas a lot, so let me know if you need a little help.  If you fade out a track and right-click the fade-out, it will give you options like "slow-fade" or "fast-fade" which should come in handy.  I also like the "cross-fade" feature.  If you overlap 2 audio tracks, it will automatically do a cross-fade for you.  This just means that the first track fades-out while the other one fades-in.

I'm really looking forward to the Generation One version of this.  Hell yeah!  I really like someone's idea of using the old lazer sound effects.  With all of the effects manipulations in Vegas, you could come up with something that sounds like a cross between a laser and a machine gun.  I love the music from the old cartoon, but I'm afraid the hair metal music from the animated movie (like the theme and "You've Got The Touch") would add cheese back into the movie.  However, the animated movie has some gems like "Unicron's Theme" even though some have that BIG 80s reverb on the drums (not a big problem though).  It would be cool if you could find some good remixes of the cartoon music on the web.

P. S.  Keep up the good work!  Thanks for making this movie so much better.  By the way, Transformers Rifftrax is fucking awesome!

I just watched your ending clip again, and I like it much more now, so disregard what I wrote earlier.  It's like if Leonardo Da Vinci had shown me Mona Lisa's smile only, and he asked for feedback.  It's hard to judge a single clip without the whole package.  So the goodness of this clip rests on what you do with the rest of the movie.  However, this clip gives me a good idea what your aim is, and I'm digging it.  I hope you continue to send clips like this in the future.  I still haven't seen Resparked, but I will soon, and this should open my eyes more to your vision.

Well, in my planned edit, my aim at the end was the removal of the kissing on top of bumblebee shots, which were a little squick.

This works ok, but I think the way the voice-over builds in the theatrical cut is just really good.  I actually don't mind the Linkin Park song so much (though the rock guitars in the chorus aren't great), though I'm not much a fan of LP.  "What I've Done", though it makes no thematic sense with the film, has a really cool building quality that fits with Cullen's performance there very well.  But heck, this one is yours, not mine. :)

I don't mind the intro of the song, but I think it's too high in the mix, and when the vocals come in I vomit a little bit. Also the little chugga-chugga guitar bridge is amateurish at best. I'm working on two different versions of this, and will probably have a branching option for all three version on Resparked 1.2 and 2.0 (assuming I can figure out the whole branching thing).

The few times I've heard vocals for Linkin Crapola I wanted to throw up, die, and shit my pantaloons.

I hate that heavy rock song over the chase scene starring Bumblebee and Barricade. That ditty was totally uncalled for. It's like the scene is saying, "Holy shit! We're being chased by a psycho robot police car! Let's get the fuck!"----But the music is saying, "TIME TO ROCK! Awe yeah-er-er-er-er-er-er!!!"

Yeah, that's a pretty crap-tastic song. Even if you like those songs, what they ultimately do is severely date the movie. See the original Transformers movie to see what what I'm talking about. Just like Lion (Transformers movie theme) and hair metal turned into a punchline, Nu-rock (or whatever it's being called) will the butt of several future jokes.

I've got a place in my heart for "The Touch" too (dig around the Resparked DVD, and you might see what I mean), but you gotta admit, the 1986 movie would be pretty awesome with a huge orchestral score. The pop songs don't really fit the mood of the movie in several parts.

Can you guess what one of my (very distant) future fanedits will consist of? ;)

I posted this over at FanEditForum, and I know Reave will be working on an 80's edit of the new Transformers in the future. I wanted to share a quick video I made with "Hunger" applied to one of my favorite scenes in the new movie. I didn't do any video or audio editing, just applied the track over the existing audio.  I think it fits quite well, almost as if Michael Bay edited the scenes to this track.  Some of the audio cues line up very nicely with the action.  I can't wait until someone completes an edit with the entire 80's soundtrack! http://www.megaupload.com/?d=28HGMH3O

Decided to have a little more fun and take it a step futher.  Man I love the 80's soundtrack!!  I went ahead and applied the 80's soundtrack to the final 26 minutes of the film.  I probably went a little overboard, but I wanted to give as many examples as possilbe.  A final edit of this kind probably wouldn't cram as much music as I did into 26 minutes.   I really think this could be pulled off.  I wasn't able to completly remove the music from the original track, so it does overpower the added music in some places, but it's minor and not bad.

Some of my favorite cues and sequences in this quick edit are 1:25-1:56, 2:46-3:09, 4:02-4:21, 5:09-6:00, 7:36-8:00, 16:22-17-05, 18:04-18:58, 19:43-21:25, and 25:31.

You can find the Touch beginning at the 18:04 Mark.  Also featured in the 19:34-21:25 sequence which I think this is my favorite sequence.  I just love this song.

Hey all. Been a loooooong time to get back on here (far to much stuff to explain where the hell I've been & why should any of you care lol?) ANYWAY back to business.

How do I get a copy of this brilliant fan cut exactly?

Reave, please tell me you're going to be doing an edit of Revenge of the Fallen.

Resparked was awesome. There's so much to be removed from ROTF, it's not even funny.

I believe only you can make it a better film.

I'd be one of those who plan to edit ROTF.  Not really one to plan it out ahead of time, though I do have ideas running around in my head.  I was just recently (yesterday) able to finish my edit of the first movie now that I have a computer with a Blu-ray burner.  It wasn't worth editing the DVD since I wouldn't watch the lower quality medium.

I commented on fanedit, but wanted to share here as well.  My initial edit was mainly of just scenes or large sections of scenes I wanted cut out, so I only had about 17 or so cuts originally.  I was looking for ideas for extra material to cut without having to watch the movie over and over and someone mentioned your edit.  Your edit list gave me a lot of ideas, and made me look a lot closer at things.  I ended up using some of the same edits you had, and some I already had.  But in going through the movie closer I found a lot of other small bits I removed.  I also kept some stuff you cut, but that's all a matter of taste I guess.  I don't have a problem with Linkin Park for example, so the ending is unchanged.

One thing you mentioned though was the Advertisement bots and that it was impossible to keep only the dew bot.  I have to say that's simply not true.  It only took about 10 minutes for me to remove the other bots and leave only the Dew bot, and most of that time was my software screwing up.  It just takes a rearrangement of the 5 seconds or so of when Sam gets back up off the ground and removal of the unneccessary footage.  Works perfectly.

Other things I did that you didn't mention was the removal of Barricade in all scenes after his fight with Bumblebee.

The rearranging of bonecrusher and optimus transformations on the highway so that the scene flows better.

The rearranging of the Epps/Blackout/binocular scene so that Blackout is shot with the grenade before Epps gets up, making it appear that the grenade is the reason he was able to run, not because of Blackout's hesitation.

I cut a few of the lines in the flashback to Sam's great grandfather ("The ice is freezing faster than it's melting" worst line in the movie IMO, and "Don't worry lads, we'll get there")

Removed 2nd taxi arriving at Glen's.

And other small things.

I think I have about 80 cuts now instead of my original 17 or so.

Sounds great. I'd like to see how you cut the dewbot scene without a hard audio cut. I didn't think it was entirely impossible, just not worth the effort for a jokebot that shoots soda cans for a weapon.

I've thought of rearranging some of the scenes similar to what you mentioned.

Would like to see what you come up with.
