Transformers: The Movie (1986 animated version) (a WIP) — Page 3

My understanding is that Intrada Records will be putting out a new edition of the score. I don't know what will be included, but chances are that they're going to be attempting a definitive edition (possibly including the original album as well). It may sound better than previous editions, or it may not. Even if it does, the original releases my still be useful because Intrada tends to crossfade adjacent tracks and mimic film edits.

Great news on the Intrada release, whenever it gets released.  Hopefully it will have the complete Autobot/Decepticon Battle theme without the extra fade out at the end.  I doubt they will include the original soundtrack since that would create additional licensing and cost issues, but a definitive version of DiCola's score would be great in it's own right.

Really, outside of that one track, the entire score has been released via BotCon CDs but the music in the film was heavily edited from what appears on the CDs.  If Intrada plans to do this right, I suspect that they will basically be including all the tracks that were released previously along with alternate versions edited to match how they were presented in the movie.  We'll know in January, I guess.

For the record, the tweet in question from Vince DiCola himself can be found here.

When Intrada released Vince's score for Rocky 4, the rest of the soundtrack was not included. In fact, his portion of "Hearts on Fire" was by itself. So if you want a "true movie version" of the song, you've gotta do a little editing yourself.

Don't get me wrong, when Intrada releases the soundtrack, I'll be buying it either way.  I know that on several of their soundtracks they included multiple edits of many of the tracks including tracks that were significantly different between the complete score version and the film edit.  It would be nice to see this with a few of the tracks on the TFTM score since the actual in-film versions are quite different from what was on the original score album due to editing.  The Botcon "Til All Are One" CD has all the score music that was in the movie and then some, it just required a lot of editing and looping some segments to create the isolated score.

Intrada just released the score CD through their site this evening.  I will have to compare it to the Botcon release to see if I need to redo the isolated score using the newer master.

I hope remastered doesn't mean dynamically compressed .... it will so suck if it does.

Is there any chance their will ever be a region A release by Sony of the blu ray?  The Sony video line went  bye bye even before they released their versions of the G1 cartoons.

Apparently Shout Factory cannot release a DVD or Blu ray because Sony won't lease it to them.

Either that or Paramount who makes the films won't let them.

Its never been really known why.

Intrada doesn't do that. In fact, producer Douglass Fake has a thread on his message board complaining about the loudness wars.

I think Sony has the distribution rights for the movie in the US but Metrodome has the original transfers and source material.  The Sony DVD transfer is different from the HD transfer used on the UK and Australian Blu-rays.  Maybe Sony has been unable to reach an agreement necessary to acquire the HD transfer or maybe they are just waiting a couple more years so they can release it as a "30th anniversary edition".

Sunbow is now owned by TV Loonland, so Sony would probably have to license the title from them.

Actually, no. TV Loonland no longer owns the Sunbow catalog - it's now in the hands of Hasbro themselves.

I'm surprised that Sony still controls the film in the States - they have no rights to anything else in the Sunbow catalog anymore.

Well, maybe that's why the movie hasn't been released, then.  The rights keep swapping hands and Hasbro hasn't decided how to deal with releasing the film for a US blu-ray release.

That's the rumor I heard.  Apparently Paramount and/or Michael Bay doesn't want it interfering with the marketing of their shitty live action movies (that I actually enjoy on some level, but not at the expense of the original stuff).  Just like JJ with Star Trek.

I guess that would explain why the movie isn't even available in HD on sites like VUDU, Amazon Streaming Video, Netflix Streaming Video, or iTunes.

My guess is that Paramount and/or Michael Bay don't want people to see "The Transformers: The Movie" and confuse it with "Transformers".

Eh? The release of Star Trek 2009 was accompanied by Blu-ray sets of the original series and the theatrical features. This year, several sets of various television series were released. And if you're a film music fan, these past few years have been a treasure trove of Trek music, including a box set last year of everything recorded for the original series. I may not have liked the last Abrams Star Trek film very much, but it certainly has benefited me with oodles of classic Trek.

I got the Intrada CD in the mail today.  It's really nice and definitely a worthwhile purchase for any fans of the movie that don't have the original Botcon releases of the score.  That being said, it's missing two short tracks (Destruction Of Moon Base 2 - parts 1 & 2) and the remaster doesn't really sound any better or worse than the "Lighting Their Darkest Hour" release, so at least I won't have to re-do the isolated music and score track.

ok, i'm going to have to order this cd.  like now.

The UK bluray is decent, and is the only BD that plays on NTSC Region A systems. The Aus BD is filled with incompatibility issues I've heard.  The UK blu has a lousy soundtrack and is still filled with "Pink Hot Rob".  But it's better than nothing.

Actually, Hot Rod was supposed to be light magenta based on the original cels used for the animation.  They changed him to red in the cartoon series to reduce the color palette needed for painting the cels.

That being said, the DVD and blu-ray releases all seem to be over-saturated, which leads a lot of colors to come out way too bright, including Hot Rod's magenta.

Also, the Australian Blu-Ray is region free.  The only issue is that all the extras are in PAL and most of them suffer from field blending.

The original toy prototype (as shown in catalog images http://tfwiki.net/wiki/File:G1catalog86-PinkHotRod.jpg ) was also magenta, so that's likely what was intended before the change, but the movie was probably already in the can by then.

The Masterpiece Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime figure released in Japan a few years ago was also magenta-ish, but the Hard Hero bust was a closer match to the colors: http://tfwiki.net/wiki/File:HardHero_HotRod_bust.JPG

I could use some feedback on one of the features.  I plan to put together character galleries with information on the main characters in the film.  Currently, I only have the new characters introduced in the movie along with Optimus Prime and Megatron.  Should I include bios and info on the pre-movie characters as well?  I would probably have to split up the characters among multiple slideshows if I did include them.

I would say to split the slideshows between those characters introduced in the movie and those that were already established that play a primary role in the film (Optimus Prime and Megatron might go better there).

Not to be a jerk, but isn't anyone "in-the-know" enough to download these already going to know the characters quite well?

I wanted to include a lot of extras in the character galleries including model sheets, character art, early designs, and pictures of the toys.  I'm still trying to find good photos of some of the toys in their original boxes.

They will make great gifts for those not yet acquainted with the material, no?  Kids, friends, etc...
