Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - The Kitten Calendar Edition. (Released)

Having finished my edit of the 2007 Transformers Movie (Transformers: Reformatted) I’ve started on an edit of Revenge of the Fallen. My goal is much the same as it was for the 2007 movie, which was to trim as much of what I felt didn’t work and to improve the pacing while maintaining all the key points to the plot being sure not to leave any gaps that will cause confusion (I know some of you already think it’s confusing).

Where possible I will try and clean up any minor problems with consistency or inaccuracies.

The first movie I made several passes through and went back and forth working on and changing my cuts. Due to the software I’m using this caused many headaches from having to realign video to audio since it doesn’t allow you to lock an audio file to the video file. For ROTF I’ve been starting from the beginning and slowly working my way through, completing a cut/transition before going to the next. Currently I am working on the Jetfire portion of the movie.

Some of the cuts I’ve made so far include:

*The entire introduction with The Fallen and prehistoric man.
*All of Optimus’ voice over during the Shanghai scene.
*Moved the title sequence to the end of the Shanghai scene.
*Trimmed Sam & Parents at the beginning somewhat (and dogs humping).
*Trimmed Bumblebee in the garage (crying).
*Trimmed the last line from the Nest hanger.
*Trimmed Leo’s roommates some as well as some of Sam’s parents.
*Trimmed Sam/Alice at party and part of the car scene.
*Trimmed Megatron/Starscream on Nemesis and trimmed end of scene.
*Trimmed classroom flirtation bit.
*Trimmed Sam in his room and w/Alice.
*Trimmed talk in the library.
*Cut repeated footage of Soundwave.
*Cut Sam’s parents with the mime.
*Cut Galloway shutting down NEST.
*Trimmed meat shop (no more talk about teeth).
*Cut Simmon’s ass.
*Cut Leo shocking himself.
*Cut Jetfire talking about his family being there for “centuries”.

Now that’s about as far as I’ve finished. I’ve begun on the next one or two cuts and I’m trying to remove the farting parachute scene, but need to make the scene flow right without it. It’s a little difficult because the humans fall to the ground in the middle of the scene and then get back up after he falls down. I’ll keep it if I have to, but would rather not. I also want to remove (during the desert part) Jetfire talking about how The Fallen hated humans. I really want to get rid of reference to humans from when the Fallen was around before so as to allow for that time to be a lot longer ago than the 17,000 B.C. that is shown in the intro. I have an idea for this part, but I’m not sure it will work yet (it didn’t). If anyone has suggestions on the best way to do it, I’m all ears.

I’m also trying to think of a name for this edit. Right now I’m thinking about, “The Kitten Calendar Edition.” It really has nothing to do with the edit, but is just a goofy title.

I should mention that those who hated the Twins probably will not like my cut. My wife and I loved the Twins and every single frame involving those 2 will remain in this fanedit. Wheelie will also remain mostly intact, with possible minor trimming. Really outside of parts at the beginning and a little of the Nemesis scene, there will be very little cut involving the Transformers (Devastator’s balls will be cut of course). Sam’s parents will be trimmed to an extent that might satisfy some, but might not be enough for others (both home and school scenes will be trimmed though).

Edit:  I’ve started on some of the later cuts in the film as well, but not to the point of cleaning up the audio, mainly just eliminating the footage I know I don’t want and creating the clips I’m going to work with.  I think, if I get much time this next week or so I may be able to finish the editing aspect of the project (of course I didn’t get much editing done the last couple weeks).  From there it will be working on the menus etc.

Did you manage to get rid all the TF1's footage? as the scene with Optimus briefing we have there two recycled footage.

When they go and visit Simmons the establishing shot has the flag that the decepticon broke in the previous scene. Is it fixed?

When Optimus is reborn we see rises twice in a flipped footage some moments later.

Any thoughts about recroping the scenes of simmons being on the pyramid so its not visible the background with the lack of devy?

When the soldiers are on the plane during the galoway conv(before he jump) the body of optimus appearing and disappearing. any ideas?

There are stock footage showing jet planes firing flares, without a reason. Any thoughts taking footage from other movie?

Imax forest will be in?

Prime can kill a prime? or maybe not? ideas?

The scene that Grindor holds the car, we see inconsistency in the background during the flight.

Adding more G1 transformers sounds?

Cant wait :D

Still a work in progress.  I've removed some footage from the first, but I'm not sure I've gotten all of it.  I was not able to remove the double footage during the Optimus debriefing, I haven't located other footage to replace it with, at least not without repeating something else.

As far as the flag, I just assume that the city has had time to replace it since it's not the same day.

I haven't worked on the very end of the film yet to look closely at Optimus' revival.  This applies to the Devastator Simmons part as well.

As for the plane, that scene is completely removed.

For the planes firing flares, I believe I just cut that out tonight, though there may be 2 instances of that, I'll have to check.

IMAX forest will be in.

Only a Prime can kill The Fallen not, not only a Prime can kill a Prime.

Not sure about the inconsistencies during the Grindor part, I'll look.  Is it the ground below Sam, or when it's wider shot with all of Grindor?

Not adding G1 sounds.

What repeated footage from TF1?  Close up of OP's head or something?  Just curious.

The first shot of the meteor's falling from space, there's a shot of the military's drone that's the same, and a couple others I think.

The first shot of the meteor's falling from space,

For what it's worth, the shot is updated.    There are many more protoforms in the shot than there were in the TF1 version.   Doesn't stop it from being obvious as a repeated shot though.

The very first shot of the meteor's from space only has 4 protoforms, it's the same as the first movie.  The later shots includes far more protoforms and those I didn't bother with.

Thats an easy fix right? adding more duplicates of the protoforms i mean.

My mistake.  I thought you meant the shot of them hitting atmosphere.  Forgot about that first wide shot.

Definitely an easy trim.  :)

Yep, it was an easy fix.  Where I'm having trouble is removing Jetfire's telling everyone that The Fallen despised the humans and wanted to kill them.

Aw, but the Jetfire's father line was one of the few funny parts of the movie.

Something i ve noticed. When megatron yells "Decepticoooons" in the forest battle, the same exact audio(with different background sounds) is in the later scene when Megs and starscream are on the pyramid and yells again "Decepticooons begin our..."

Also When Megs yells Devastatooor , the devy groars with his mouth closed when in several frames later he opens it...

Are you going to remove the little bird in the sphinx's nose while optimus is next to it?

Any thoughts about recroping some shots when the action doesnt affects the background? For example when the decepticons are coming in asteroid form the camels in front of the action seems to dont bother with the (real even) explosions.

Any thoughts about cuting out Bonecrusher from both scenes(robot and vehicle mode?) at least recolor him(?)

ANY CHANCE to remove the song of linking park played million times in this movie? Something like Uncanny Antman did in his edit removing most of the band songs..(thanks again for that)

Replacing the silly bubble sound of megatron blaster with something more heavy?

Wow, you're really all about the little things aren't you?  Currently I don't have any plans to change any of the things you listed, but I'll take a look at them.  The only excepion may be Linkin Park (why does everyone hate their songs in these movies??)  at the end.  I can't even recall where it's played elsewhere in the movie.

Author

Yep. I can do my best making these movies even better. Yes Transformers are good movies for me (visual guy here)

Also a more extensive is an edit the more interest it has rather just an edit.

About the Linking park song i meant the nest song or whatever it called. The remixed one. You can use score from gears of war 2 that it has almost exact music with ROTF.

Cheap and awesome i know.

Ok, I'm pretty much done now.  I need to try to work on one part one more time and see if I can finally fix something. I'll try to output a video file in the next few days and maybe add some stuff up on youtube.

Other changes I've made since the original post:

*Leo/Mikeala land in desert

*Image of Autobots being loaded onto plane and Lennox comments about it being a mistake

* Removal of Lennox and Epps discussing the phone call and location of coordinates

*  Removal of Checkpoint scene

*  Remove Galloway parachute scene

*  Change footage and trim end of Petra scene to remove Simmons viewing troops parachuting from so far away, and to add time lapse.

*Remove Simmons pointing at flare right after Sam does.

*Heavily trim parts of military scenes (most parts without robots).

*Remove Galloway in desert scene

*Remove repeat shot from first movie of Drone

*Trim Simmons conversation with Captain of Aircraft Carrier

*Crop shot of Simmons on walkie talkie to remove wrong pyramid from the background

* Remove Devastator's balls (the flagrant scene anyway).

*Remove Megatron calling Devastator's name (I intended to anyway, and I know it was there when I watched the blu-ray, but on the editing software, the audio of him yelling it is just not there, though the rest of the audio is.

*Trimmed Sam's meeting with the Primes (I refuse to call this robot heaven since that's not what it is).  I don't care a lot for this scene, but I feel it is necessary.  I removed the part about Sam's destiny though, that isn't necessary.

*Removed a couple of repeated shots during The Fallen's retrieving of the Matrix.

*Removed the audio for "Give me your face!"

*And I went back and cut out the 6 bogeys coming up from the water for those that feel it's a continuity error.

Total time removed:  Just about 19.75 minutes.  If I'm able to fix that last thing, it will go a little over 20 minutes.

I may do an alternate version for those who absolutely hate the Twins and trim them down some, that will probably come in at 22-24 minutes cut.

This edit is finished, and will hopefully be available by Sunday.  As soon as it's up, I'll start on "The Real Effing Deal" version with less Twins involvement.

Does this mean a DVD version? Somebody shoot me the links, either way. ;)

PS: Watched my "Big Screen Edition" DVD for the first time not long ago. The extra IMAX footage was cool (the whole point of these movies was robot fighting, after all), but awfully short (not so jarring as people said, but I imagine the effect was much more annoying in theaters).

One thing about the IMAX footage though is it means one more shot of the "decepticon balls" (though far less "in your face," pardon the pun).

The deleted scenes were CRAP... just more lame comedy bits. I'm glad they were left out!

There will be a DVD version, both single and dual layer (not sure which will be first), a blu-ray version (the DVDs will go up first due to size), and possibly an .avi or something small.

I'll be a little later on my delivery than I thought, I watched the final product today and noticed one small thing to fix and 2 small audio things I wanted to improve slightly.  It's rendering now and apparently has another 20 hours to go, so it looks like late Monday, maybe Tuesday before I'll get something uploaded.

I figure Wednesday or Thursday I can start up on the extra edits for The Real Effing Deal version.  That probably won't take more than a day or two for editing, maybe another day for some very basic menus, then a couple days to render and get uploaded.

The dual-layer DVD version is uploading right now.  It's about half way done.  Once that is uploaded I'll upload the single layer DVD, and then finally the blu-ray.

Then I will work on removing bits of the Twins for the 2nd version.

Edit: The DVD5 and DVD9 are now available.
