Top Grossing Films of All Time

Author
Time
Okay people, this thread is dedicated to the top 100 grossing films of all time (U.S. domestic figures only, sorry). Bear in mind that the page attached to this link is updated weekly so, if you mention a film's ranking, it can easily change...

Top 100 Grossing Films in U.S.

My question is, how many of these have you seen? Which ones have you not seen?

I can say I've seen all but four of them...

The Passion of the Christ (currently listed as #46, but quickly moving up the chart)
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (now #79)
The Waterboy (#97)
The Sound of Music (#99)

Is that just sad or what?

Bossk, I can't believe out of that 100 films, you haven't seen the Sound of Music! That is a little sad. I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but I love that movie. I used to watch it with my grandma all the time, almost every Christmas.

Hmmm, out of that list I haven't seen 17 of them, and some of them are gonna stay that way (I can't stand most Sandler flicks), but I'm surprised how high some of them are. Didn't know the Perfect Storm or Twister were such big hits, I thought they really forgettable.

I have NOT seen the following movies:
(some names shortened to make typing faster)

1. Titanic
5. Spiderman
12. Harry Potter- Sorceror's Stone
17. Pirates of the Caribbean
18. The Sixth Sense
21. The Matrix Reloaded
23. Harry Potter- Chamber of Secrets
24. Dr. Suess' How the Grinch stole X-Mas
26. Monters Inc.
31. Bruce Almighty
32. Twister
34. Castaway
38. Signs
39. Rush Hour 2
41. Ghost (count that as half, I've seen parts of it)
43. Saving Private Ryan
44. Mission Impossible 2
45. X2
46. The Passion
47. Austin Powers 3
49. Austin Powers
51. The Exorcist

I think I'll stop there. Suffice to say, I don't see a lot of movies.

I think the following address has a better Top 100 list.
Top 100 Grossing Movies: Adjusted

This is how it should be. Star Wars is 2nd only to Gone with the Wind.

I also think inflation is a huge factor in the top grossing films of all time...

I enjoyed Titanic the first couple of times I saw it. But I have had absolutely no desire to see it since that time. It's one of those good one-time-only flicks.

Have never had the desire to see The Sound of Music. Sorry Sweyland. I'm sure I will sometime, just not a priority.

And, yes, inflation is of course a huge factor in this list. Gone With The Wind would still be the #1 flick of all time if inflation didn't exist. Considering there are still theaters throughout the south that play that movie year round (I mean that literally) and the fact that tickets to see GWTW were only a dime when it first came out... well, you do the math.

Not to mention that weren't a dozen new releases coming out every week fighting for box office or the TV remote or the VHS/DVD player. What else were you gonna see?

Gotta agree with you about Titanic. It was entertaining enough the first time through in the theatre, but the second I caught it on TV I almost fell asleep after 2 minutes. I still think Cameron is a terrific director will a real sense of storytelling and pacing, but that's really his weakest and thinnest film next to True Lies, but that's supposed to be a no-brain comedy.

Congrats Sweyland. I agree on Cameron. He has such storytelling ability and I'd love to see him tackle an original subject again. I love Terminator (the original only), The Abyss (one of my all-time faves), and Aliens (still my fave of the Ripleyized bunch).

I would have to say, though, that I am a big fan of True Lies although I do see your point regarding the style of this film. It is a far cry from pretty much anything else he has done.

I'm afraid my list of films I haven't seen on this list is a little larger than I thought:
Forrest Gump (no desire to see, either)
The Sixth Sense (will get around to before seeing The Village)
Bruce Almighty
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
M: I-2
X2 (I know, I know)
The Passion
The Exorcist
Pearl Harbor
What Women Want
Liar Liar
There's Something About Mary
A Beautiful Mind
Chicago
Meet the Parents
Hannibal
Catch Me if You Can
The Waterboy
Die Another Day
The Firm

Some of these I will see eventually, and some I will never see. 'Nuff said.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Actually, the gross list counts every single release of a movie. So the OV and SE of ET are all counted as one as is SW. Sorry.

Now that I look at it again, I can add M:I2 to my list of unseen flicks. Don't want to either.

Yes, do see Elf and Ocean's Eleven; I'm still debating seeing Passion, but still mostly on the side of "don't really wanna see it."

I am Surprized Mr. George Lucas has let Yahoo keep that listed Release date?!

As he keeps saying no Star Wars Film(s) Exist before 97??.
