I watched it a few years ago on YouTube. I remember it being very boring, but far better and far less damaging than the prequels.

Well, I was 3 years old at the time.....and have absolutely no memories of it.
Hell, I don't even know if it was even shown where I grew up.

I'm not sure if I saw it when it aired or not. I was 17 at the time. I likely wouldn't have bothered to make a mental note of it... probably saw part of it and got bored and changed the channel. That sort of thing you can't possibly appreciate until years later.

I remember the anxiety and excitement of waiting for it to air. I was so excitied about it actually that I remember cutting out the tv guide ad and taping it to my bedroom door like a poster on the day it was going to air! I also remember being extremely disappointed not even half-way through. I did watch it 'til the end, though - I even remember Carrie Fisher singing. But by then, I had almost completely lost interest. Way to go, Lucas. Even a 10 year old thought it was terrible back when it aired - what were they thinking? I still wish it was on the blu-ray though. They did after all release much worse than that on the blu-ray set - like the prequels.
That says it all.
Ah, Itchy and his virtual reality porn hairdryer set. Some techno geek was no doubt inspired by that scene!
Compared to other holiday variety specials of the era, it's actually pretty typical of the genre. Check out The Paul Lynde Halloween Special sometime. It came out on DVD a few years back.
I long for the day a photo of Lucas visiting the set surfaces. ;)
Where were you in '77?
I was 6 years old when it aired, I remember it very well for some reason. I was over my aunts house and it was a train-wreck from the start. I still haven't watched it since then so it would be funny to see it again.
I think it's good for a once in a 30 year laugh. I finally saw it for the first time in March. I don't think I could sit through it again, but I have shown the very worst part to some family and friends, that being Itchy's Private Moments.
Funny how Lucasfilm mostly pretends it doesn't exist, and yet we get merchandise like Boba Fett in HS cartoon colors.
Chewie's family is actually canon!
And if you've never heard it outside of the HS...

Has anyone noticed how similar Itchy and Creepy Puppet Yoda look? I think they were separated at birth. Imagine the possibilities when it's revealed that CPYoda and Itchy are half-brothers...

Now there's a thought I'm glad George Lucas hasn't had.
I can live with Darth Vader building C3PO and owning R2D2, but that would be completely terrifying!

You just had to go there, didn't you? ;)

I think I actually saw the HS before I saw SW. My memories are fuzzy - I would have been 8 at the time.
We need an official release- 33 years is too long to wait. ;-)
My fondest memory; Decades later, when I realized I could recall non of it from memory. Like a few others around here, I waited anxiously in front of the TV for it to start - and was so disgusted, I don't think I even watched all the way to the end.
I had to babysit a friend 's sons a while back. They're huge Wars fans and kept on irritatingly saying how wonderful George is, even when I pointed out that they had fallen asleep during most of the prequels several times.
So, when I babysat them, I brought round a dvd of the holiday special and showed it to them. It was interesting to see the look of excitement on their faces (from first seeing Han and Chewie) quickly disipate into extreme horror when the show went on.

Still haven't seen it.
I watched part of it, I couldn't continue. I couldn't believe there was something about Star Wars that I couldn't stand to watch.

Lazy/busy.
Listen here mister, having a so called "life" is a pitiful excuse.
;-)
I remember when it was a badge of honor to have watched the HS all the way through and survived.
One good thing did come out of it though.

i saw nostalgia critics review - the intro was funny and spot-on.
im thinking the innuendo-laden virtual reality scene with itchy and dihann carroll is what horrified lucas more than anything else.
Uncle George says :
I have heard the evil stories of the Holiday Special. I thought the stories were told to frighten children. Later, I learnt the Holiday Special was once real and did of unspeakable things. I am ashamed of what happened here so many years ago, and I assure you this will never happen again in my kingdom.
I don't think the Ewok movies even compare to the HS. Not to mention the first ten minutes of Battle for Endor rivals Alien 3 in it's wanton slaughter. ;)
