To those who own the OOT Sept Release & an HDTV

It has been about 6 months from the release of the OOT on Sept 12th and judging by many rumors we may never see the OOT ever again on DVD or HDDVD, and I was just wondering from those who bought the DVD's and have an HDTV:

Overall thoughts?
Do you still watch them?
Does the grain in the hoth & tatooine scenes bother you?
Did you go back to the SE cause they do look better?
Have you just put up your hands and accepted the quality and made peace with yourself cause it is the OOT?

I am just interested now that there has been ample time to watch these things, and I guess do you still watch them even though watching them on an HDTV amplifies its flaws.

Well, honestly, I haven't been on a Star Wars kick in a while, so I haven't watched the movies in a couple of months. But basically, I don't mind watching them on a standard TV, because the flaws aren't really noticeable there. I never watch it on my computer anymore, because, for some reason, the DVD playback software I had that allows me to zoom in is no longer functioning, and the only other one I have doesn't have a feature to adjust for letterbox, and I just can't watch it like that with two sets of borders.

I still watch my Sept. 12th set,and I have a 62' HDTV and play the discs on an upconvert DVD player from OPPO,but I ran a mild grain filter,and made them anamorphic widescreen,so I am totally happy.

Please explain more about what you did, cause a friend of mine told me if I buy a Pro-Scan DVD player, all DVD's look better. What is a an upconvert DVD player?

Upconverters are really only useful for dvds that looked good to begin with. Basically, they rescale the image to HD size, not simply blowing it up the way a "zoom" feature sort of works. The image doesn't look as good as a true HD one, but they still look pretty impressive considering. Like I said, however, this is really only useful for video that was decent to begin with. The 2004 SE dvd, for example, must look fantastic when upconverted because it was very high-resolution and about as sharp as a DVD could possibly look. The GOUT, i am sure, looks equally as crappy as it does on a SD television, if not worse. There just isn't the detail or resolution there to upconvert, especially considering it is super-grainey and non-anamorphic.

NO feelings hurt at all,it just cracks me up to read the comments from people that think they are so much better than anyone else,who cares,do you go around correcting spelling to,or writing in all caps,or using numbers in words,etc,etc,etc.
it really doesnt bother me in the least,just felt like saying something,so what.
I know what I have done in the past for this very nice community,what I have done now,and what will soon be done in the future,I also see who else does alot of productive things too,I will just leave it at that,so if it makes you guys fell more productive,keep correcting people,me included.

Geez, you seem to take constructive criticism as a type of martyring for the subject. I wasn't bullying you. I wasn't questioning your intelligence, the rest of the content of your post, or your overall contribution to the site. I don't think I'm better than anybody else. I just saw a minor mistake that I'd seen a lot of lately and felt the need to point it out. So just calm down already and enjoy viewing your astronomically large television! ^_~

Wait, if there are upconverter DVD players, then the whole problem of letterboxing is solved? I guess its just the principle of the thing...

Well, if letterboxing was the ony problem with this release, then yeah. But there's the problem of the DVNR smearing and ghosting as well as it just overall not being a very clear picture for this day and age. Like I said, I don't find those problems especially noticeable when watching on a standard TV.

Well, if it was that simple, we wouldn't have this problem. There's probably more to it; how good can a laserdisc master look when it's upconverted?

the upconverted 4:3 letterbox version still does not look as good as a anamorphic widescreen version upconverted.
I ran my regular 4:3 Sept 12th DVD's and they looked OK,but when I converted my set,I used a mild grain filter and converted to 16:9 anamorphic it looked so much better

back ot the original question:

I have a 30" widescreen HDTV. It's not any of the new technologies, but a more traditional picture tube, which delivers a great picture. Before the GOUT, i was watching my DC laserdiscs on the tv, using the tv's zoom feature. they weren't perfect, but were more than watchable. Now, with the GOUT, the picture has a bit more detail & i'm not having to change discs twice for each movie. So, they were a step up from what i had been using. Unfortunately my dvd player doesn't have the proper "letterbox" zoom option that corrects the subtitle position, but they were always being cut off on my laserdisc anyway, so no change there. I was happy with & had come to accept my laserdiscs as the "final" version i'd ever have (until the X0 comes out...) so the GOUT was an unexpected & welcomed surprise. While it's far from perfect, i could live with the GOUT quality & my hdtv & be happy* if it was never released again. Though i might eventually convert them to anamorphic for the sake of not having to zoom & getting the subtitles in the correct position some day.

That being said, it's still incredibly frustrating and unfortunate the way Lucasfilm has decided to treat the OOT & that the GOUT is the best official quality of what are arguably the most popular & successful films ever made. But, i can't do anymore to change lucasfilms hearts. I've voiced my opinion in multiple ways to them &, like they've done with all of us, they've ignored it. However, i'm able to seperate my frustration & anger with the company from my enjoyment of the films & can happily sit down, hit the zoom button, & escape to a galaxy far, far away. Even if that galaxy's non anamorphic & a bit grainy.



*happy watching what i have, not happy that this substandard treatment was the best we ever got

How much better? Probably still worse than 99% of all DVD releases

They look awesome.

They're grainy, scratchy and saturated with color. You know, the way Star Wars is supposed to look.

It's glorious. Dark Jedi's discs are the only Star Wars ones I watch now, because they are as close as I'll ever get to replicating the theatrical experience I had as a kid. And that's what this is all about, right?
