What the hell is going on?

I've read a lot of crap today, and this is the first time in a long time I've questioned the value of my work in maintaining this place and busting my ass on the redesign. This is the most childish garbage I've seen posted here--ever. I'm now beginning to understand the lousy reputation this forum has developed in the fan community. If I had stumbled across this board recently, I can't say I would've bothered to sign up.

Some of you are going to point your fingers at a certain member. I see a lot of namecalling on both sides and not one of you involved in this little playground altercation can claim to be in the right. Calling someone a dickhead because they like the prequels is unacceptable. Sending PMs with your insults so you can appear respectful in public is unacceptable.

I've always preferred a hands-off approach to forum moderation, believing people can work out their differences given enough time and discussion, but it doesn't seem to be working in this case.

All personal attacks stop now. This includes public posts and private messages. Personal attacks will result in your removal.

No exceptions. No excuses. No warnings.

I apologize for my behavior in this matter.

I am more sorry that this has tainted the effort that Jay is making here with this site. He's doing an important thing in keeping the spirit of the OT alive and the way I have acted has damaged that.

I have no excuse. If I've made you question the effort you've made, Jay...then I am more sorry about that than anything. This site and what it represents is important. I hope it continues to be a mainstay on the internet.

There's nothing wrong with arguing over aspects of the films. But arguing over whether or not someone is a cocksucker or a shithead is not allowed and just immature. Jay's message seems self-explanatory: no PERSONAL attacks.

i dont think arguing is the problem. its arguing that results in people losing their nerve that is the problem. understandably, these movies inspire a great amount of emotion, being good for those of similar opinion and all the more bad for those of differing opinion. i would imagine the webmaster has read some of the altercations here and seen that they're not entirely instigated by that one person we all know, but by others too, and thats why he made this thread. ill certainly do my best to keep awayf from any personal attacks, and hope that the webmaster is able to identify those who simply argue and disagree for the sake of it.

Because pointless name-calling is not only not constructive, it wastes bandwidth and makes us look like a bunch of idiots to people visiting the site.

So I think the general consensus is that there's nothing wrong with arguing, per se, as long as it has a point and doesn't involve putting down other people.

It's great to see the "Emperor Jay" coming here to calm down the kids!

But I think that personal attacks or not the only trouble here. Since few days, many members who don't like the SE and/or the PT claim endlessly that they hate Lucas, SE is shit and other similar stuff.
I respect the fact that some members really hate new SW stuff, but why do they say it EVERY day? And what is the point to have a "hardcore haters only" thread? I don't see the point of all that...

It really makes me crazy to come here to read the half of thread saying that "Lucas is evil", "PT is shit",... It seems that some of you are thinking that Lucas owe you something. But it's not right. You may not like all that have been made of course, but please be respectfull...

There is enough room in my heart for just about everything in the SW universe. While the O-OT may be my favorite, I respect most of the SE changes (we know the ones I hate). Furthermore, this site has taught me the most important thing ever about these films: how to fix the stuff that in my eyes is broken, so I can enjoy what Lucas created once again. Thus, I also love virtually everything about every fan-edit and the positive guys who post in that area of the board.

Politics thread excepted, I have tried to be gentlemanly in most if not all of my postings and hope that good will is paid forward even more than the tangible things we've shared. I believe the golden rule still has merit -- but only if we actually try to follow it.

The wide age range that posts on this board is often forgotten, but I hope the more mature of us will continue to set an appropriate example that grownup talk comes first from intelligent, thought-out discussion, not about trash talking. It's especially pointless in the virtual environment where we're protected by anonymity and by distance. I'm confident not one of us would hurl the kinds of insults and threats we do if we were face to face. It's an empty gesture to do so on the board.

It is equally important to know and understand that the discussion of illicit behaviors, even academically, has no purpose on this forum. All it does is draw attention to this board unnecessarily, undermining the reason why this board exists: preservation of Star Wars as we know and love it, which has about as many interpretations as The Bible itself. Whether the Latin Vulgate is your canon or the New Revised Standard Edition (tell me those analogies don't apply), what is behind them both is what should draw us together. Then and only then can we sift out the differences and come to some understanding of our different points of view.

I am not going to comment anymore on the PT and the SEs. I think that all the points that have been made about both, whether good or bad, have been made. It's becoming a dead horse that we continue to beat. None of us have any definitive answers, but that doesn't mean we can't speculate....for all the good it does us.

I'm keeping my post strictly about current or future SW news and anything OOT related. To me at least, the SEs and the PT are a dead issue. Time to move on.

It makes sense. I mean, there's a difference between saying, "I think this because this and this and this," and "The prequels suck, the OT sucks, you suck, and you're always wrong." Discussion and argument are fine, but there are some people on this board who turn an argument into a personal attack. If you can't back up an argument, it's not an argument. If you dissolve into, "Go to hell, cocksucker," then you're helping nobody. If you have an opinion, I'm sure we all want to hear it, but be civil. Respect other people and their opinions, and give some backing to your own, rather than just insulting back and forth.

Eh, just a few arguments spread over a few threads of the board stopped being about anything constructive and de-evolved into bickering and name-calling. Most of it, I believe, is in the "Star Wars From a Newcomer's Point of View" thread which, at the time of this posting, is near the bottom of the second page.
