TiVo/DVR

Not sure if there's been a dedicated thread about this.

Man, I got a DVR system with my satellite dish in July. Best investment I've ever made. We use it constantly. What a great tool...

Yeah, it's pretty handy stuff. I've been running SageTV on my PC for several months and absolutely love it. Then a few weeks ago we noticed that DirecTV is giving away the R10 DVR box (sells for $99.99ish, and has a $100 rebate) so we picked one up to put in the living room. The new setup allows the wifey to time-shift her stuff and record shows we watch together on the new unit, and lets me use the PC DVR for simultaneous programming and things I want to archive. She's quickly grown to see the beauty of a tapeless existence, and as soon as I back up a few boxes full of old tapes our last VCR will be tucked away into the back of a closet.

I don't watch a lot of tv really so I never thought I would need one. But my dvr has become invaluable due to that silly little show called "Lost". It's awesome to go back and look for the little details and hints in each show, which are too subtle/numerous to pick out in only one viewing.

My wife and I actually watch less TV now, but all of our shows are recorded and waiting for us whenever we have a chance to watch them. Very handy when you've got two working parents and two chidlren.

I have two dual-tuner 35hr DirecTivos - they were $70 bucks each at Best Buy. I can record 4 shows simultaneously.

sweet! When I finally land this job, I'll think about getting one of these tivos. My family has recently gotten addicted to 24 so it'll come in handy for that and cartoon network.

The nice thing about my situation was: my Directv unit was going out anyways. When you get Tivo, it's $5 a month no matter how many Tivos you own - the service covers all of them. I also have to pay another $5 a month for the second Directv box, but since each box has two tuners, it's like having 4 boxes for the price of 2.

The only drawback is that my wife's friend has a DISH two-tuner PVR, and it can output two different shows to two different TVs at the same time. Mine won't. It's not horrible, since both Tivos and TVs are in the same room. We use the second one mainly for my daughter's shows (we have 3-4 episodes of each of her favorite shows saved. It beats having to look for them in real time, assuming they are on at that time.) I also have it recording 80's videos from MTV, and every few weeks I sit and watch those for nostalgia's sake.

Rik: Have you heard about some people reporting that on their TiVo units they've noticed shows that have been "flagged" for deletion by the system after a certain amount of time? I believe the official line from the company was that they were testing this technology but have no intentions of deploying it. Pretty much the people who were targeted believe that it's the first steps in copyright holders protecting themselves by not allowing someone to retain copies for an extended period of time.

I don't have a DVR, so to speak.

I own a Toshiba RD-XS32. Its a DVD-burner with a 80GB hard drive, which allows me to record off TV the same way a normal tape deck would.

Call me a Phillistine, but what is a TiVo? I hear all these American Hollywood stars talking about it in awards ceremonies and on Oprah, but I don't think they've been released in Australia yet (although I'm probably wrong). Is it just a brand of set-top box? What kind of features does it have?

- Yes, I've heard of this but have not had it happen myself BUT I've had this happen in the past during beta software. NOW I know that when this has happened in the past the honest reason was that TiVo Suggestions and all TiVo recordings are kept on the HD for a set amount of time OR if a new recording has a hight priority then recorded shows NOW back in the tivo would start to delete shows as the HD filled up; suggestions first then recorded shows - some of the first software versions would auto delete shows in 7 days in order to make room for more recordings.

BUT

I also know that TiVo has been against the wall for some time and the MPAA is not gonna back down SO this MAY very well be a sign...

I don't see how this can be an issue, from a legal standpoint based on what's already happened in the past. There was a big fight about VCR's when they hit the mainstream, but as I understand it, the result was the signal is coming into my house. I can record it if I wish so long as I don't redistribute it.

Tivo is a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) device with a subscriber service.

The base equipment is basically a VCR that saves to a computer hard drive instead of tape. The advantages are that rewind and fast forward are practically instantaneous and you can save a LOT of stuff on one.

The subscriber service, which requires a phone line/network connection, offers a number of automated features.
There is the TV listings system. Every night, the system downloads the next days lists, so you can browse what is going to be on without a TV Guide.
Also (and this is the big feature), there is the ability to input a show name, and it will do the programming work related to recording every instance of that show. For example, say you want it to record Seinfeld. It will search the TV listings for every Seinfeld show listed, and automatically set itself to record them.

That's too lazy for me. I'm perfectly happy programming what I want recorded. The benefit I have is that I can then burn the stuff to DVD-R...WITH a decent menu system.

Actually, you can burn or record to an outside unit from TiVo as well. There are RCA outputs on the back of a TiVo box that will allow you to hook up a VCR or DVD burner so you can back it up. It's a wonderful thing. My wife and I finally invested in one a month ago and love it. Well, when we get it fixed, that is. The modem got fried in an electrical storm and now the unit cannot obtain program listings from Comcast (which it does via modem). We can still record but we have to set it like a VCR. Still much better than friggin' VHS tapes, which is what we used before this.

Starkiller, you missed one cool thing about the subscription... when, for example, you set your TiVo to find all the episodes of Lost to record, you can either tell it to record every instance of the show or just new episodes. With shows that are in syndication and still have new episodes on, this is great, because, otherwise, you will wind up with a TiVo full of King of Queens episodes, both old and new, when all you really wanted to see was the new stuff. But, if you are trying to catch up on the old stuff as well, then you're not just stuck with the new episodes. TiVo automatically finds them all regardless of time, date, and station.

right. at first glance, TiVo is physically the same as any digital video recorder. saves TV broadcasts as MPEG files, plays MPEG files. simple enough. but what they're actually selling, especially since the recorder itself is sold for so little (or given away, even), is the convenience provided by the interface. the ability to easily search and record things, record multiple episodes of your favorite series (even when they're shown at irregular hours) without having to select each episode individually... and the option to automatically record things which you might never have thought to record, yourself, based on genre/actor/director/etc preferences. the system essentially learns your tastes, by accepting your "i enjoy this show"/"i don't enjoy this show" responses via the remote control. it's a way of sorting through a large selection of channels and finding shows that you actually wish to see.

Ours is not a brand name TiVo, but it seems to not record episodes that are duplicates of something it recorded say in a two week period (even if you've deleted it). After that it will record the same episode again.

with TiVo, it depends on the complete-ness of the guide info. if the guide contains detailed info for a series, like episode title and description, then TiVo will be able to avoid recording each episode more than once. however, if it's a series that typically does not have a detailed listing in the guide, then TiVo will have problems with it. it shouldn't have any problem with most of the popular weekly series, but if you're interested in recording something like a news broadcast, talkshow, or syndicated series that's shown more than once per day, there's some chance that it will try to record duplicates. you could go into the "to do" list and remove the duplicates from the list, although that might get slightly tiresome.

3RA1N1AC is right... it all depends on your cable service provider and their program listings. TiVo is only as good as the cable provider. I had set my TiVo to record the entire season of Tommy Lee Goes to College (morbid curiosity... sorry) after it had already aired on NBC. A rerun marathon of the show was set for VH1 one night very late at night. So I set my TiVo because the Comcast listings said all episodes were going to be run back to back. When I watched the next day, it only caught one episode of the show because the rest were incorrect listings. Not TiVo's fault. Some kind of miscommunication between Viacom (owner of VH1) and Comcast. Maybe a last second schedule change.

Actually, I'm glad they weren't all recorded. My wife and I watched about five minutes and deleted it. You could tell just how blatantly bad it was from those five minutes. Couldn't take it.
