GRINDHOUSED SERIES VOL #4

A less serious retelling of John Rambo’s story. Rambo himself is a narrator who tell us story of his life in Forrest Gump fashion - the main narrative is the story from “First Blood” while second and third movie (along with some more additional material) become flashbacks of his earlier adventures. Everything is tied with John’s quest to find and face three mysterious bears colonel Trautman told him about.

Trailer: https://www.reddit.com/r/fanedits/comments/tjlutf/rambo_grindhouse_project_trailer/

  • primary storyline is First Blood
  • there is a flashback about Rambo’s life from before events of the movies build from elements taken from various movies
  • II and III are compressed to the form of flashbacks tied to the main plotline.
  • a fake AI Rambo voiceover created through fakeyou.com site applied to the whole film, he is commenting events depicted in the edit Forrest Gump style.
  • there was no excessive re-scoring ( I was going to do it, but source files are not re-scoring friendly) so it is still mostly Goldsmith music, but some songs and music were added to newly created scenes and to scenes which had originally no music at all. Some little re-building SFX in few instances.
  • some deleted material from First Blood and Rambo III from Ultimate Blu-ray edition has been included
  • additional footage from 12 non-Rambo movies was used.
Sometimes it is 1-2 minutes, sometimes just a few seconds.
  • additional music by: Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Jon Hare, Pornosonic, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sammy Hagar, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Pride & Glory, Mike Post, Simon Boswell and… Sylvester Stallone
  • most of the scenes in First Blood that doesn’t include Rambo himself have been cut. The story is now shown mostly from his point of view but there are still some exceptions from that (but we never leave Rambo for more than seconds).
  • grindhouse effects of varying severity added thoughout the movie
  • be warned that this edit includes high amount of swearing as well as nudity and sex scenes not present in original Rambo movies.

Final running time is 111 minutes, which includes around 67 minutes of First Blood (including credits and alternative/deleted material), 8 minutes of Rambo II and something like 25 minutes from Rambo III. So, a little more than 90% of it is Rambo, the rest is the material from various non-Rambo movies.

Fantastic edit. Very humorous and featured creative use of different material to create a new story. Was a little upset we didn’t get any Red Heat footage of “Uncle Bear”, as was implied by the preview for this edit in STAR BEAST. Seriously recommend this to anyone who enjoys creative, tongue-in-cheek edits.

The trailer was made before I’ve even started working on the actual edit. At that stage not everything was planned. “Red Heat” material was considered as Uncle Bear’s backstory, then I watched Red Heat first time in ten years and eventually decided I will use “Commando” material instead.

Ah, makes sense. I do wish that you would’ve included both sources–I feel like having Arnie play an evil Russian commando in Vietnam would both be funny and make sense, given what happens in the real movie.

Yeah, but edit ended up long enough even without additional backstory bits and Uncle Bear isn’t that prominent character to need more of a backstory. He’s “Not even that hard” after all 😉

After re-watch I think that Brother Bear segment could be trimmed a little, but frankly, I dont have a desire to work on this edit anymore. It was quite an exhausting experience.

Trying to make AI-Stallone voice to say what I wanted it to say was a nightmare sometimes.

In many cases I needed to find different words of the same meaning cause it failed every time to say what it was supposed to say. Sometimes I needed to figure out what should I write to get the result I needed cause the voice read something wrong. For example - if I wanted it to say “bear” I needed to write “baer”, because it reads “Bear” as “Beer” (as can be heard in the trailer).

Also, sometimes it reads the words differently in complete sentence compared to stand-alone words, and stand alone may sounded better or worse, so there was a need to record words separately and edit the sentence from them.

I love that FakeYou is a thing. Wow.
Watched the trailer and loved it. I hope you changed the spelling of Bears for the final version so it doesn’t sound as much like Beer.

Looks like a lot of Hot Shots 2 content. How can you hate that?

Yes 😃
It sounds more like “bear” in the edit itself. There’s more about it in one of posts above.

Wow reminds me of SAM on the Apple ][+. You had to type a lot of things as syllables rather than actually words.

I’ve just released “Final Edition” for this edit with some additional material and little changes:

  • new re-encode with higher bitrate
  • added 7 minutes long grindhouse opening including three grindhouse trailers
  • additional sfx in several scenes (mostly screams and blood splatters)
  • added new piece of music: Contra Jungle Theme, synthcover by French Riviera
  • added one additional shot that I’ve forgotten to include first time around
  • four audio options included: 1) new stereo grindhoused audio (includes changes listed above), 2) same as 1 but without added noise, 3) same as 1 but ugly grindhouse mono mix, 4) audio track from previous release

Finally started watching this tonight (only took more than a year). I’m curious if you have the subtitles in English or at least .SRT so I can do a software translation from Bosnian(?) to English.
