Things that you have always wondered about...

Author
Time
Ever since I was a kid, there are things that I have always thought about in the Star Wars movies. For example,

1. How does Darth Vader eat? ("Help me take this mask off." "But you'll die.")
2. When Luke is leaving Dagobah, how does
a. R2 get into the X-wing? (Please don't say he uses his booster rocket things)
b. after Luke climbs into the ship, where does the ladder go?
3. "Only Imperial Stormtrooper are so precise." If that is the case, why can't they hit anyone? By the time ANH comes around are they cloned from SE Greedo?

Now, these are just a few things. I am not trying to open up some big debates here. I'm not looking for any EU answers, I thought I would just share them. Does anyone have any to add?

1. In the Shadows of the Empire novel, there is a scene where he removes his armor/breathing apperatus and using some Sith healing technique to heal his lungs enough to let him breathe normal air for a few minutes. I suppose he can probably do the same thing to eat.

2a. I have wondered the same thing
2b. Yoda force moves it?? I don't know that one either.

3. That has been a question asked for years. I don't think anyone knows.

What about the scene in ESB when his back is facing the camera, and you can see the back of his head? Then the helmet is placed back on his head by that machine, and he turns around to talk to the admiral (or whatever rank that guy was). What's the deal with that?

Well, as for number 3, have you ever seen a James Bond-henchman that can actually hit a target? It doesn't just happen in Star Wars - both franchises would have been pretty short of the villains really were precise.
"The things that stick in my mind and make me laugh were, like, memos worried about whether or not the Wookie should have pants. They're looking at this thing and saying, "Couldn't he have some lederhosen?" This is great. Of all the things to worry about, the Wookie has no pants." -Mark Hamill

I think that was just the helmut. Not the face mask part.

What's a helmut? Sort of like a diabolical dog from the underworld?

Perhaps a former German chancellor

Ad.1 - it was explained somewhere that Vader uses some "starwarsish" equivalent of I.V drip and feeding tube (fluids + nutrient pulp). He could breathe on his own for a brief moments when using Dark Side of the Force and while enclosed in his Meditational Chamber (air filters etc.)

Ad.2 - continuity problems. There must be some compartment in the fighter to stash the ladder, but on Dagobah there was no ground crew to service the fighter

Ad.3 - yet another thing said by Obi which is "true only from certain point of view"
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

LOL there are many continuity problems or things that "don't make sense" in Star Wars. One of the things that bothers me the most though is in ESB when the snow speeders are attacking the AT-ATs they feel the need to fly staight toward the front, just where the AT-AT's have all of their lasers, instead of the backs where there aren't any.

There are some things that "disturbe" me in ESB:

- The giant space slug: that creature seems to close his mouth in a very slow speed, but just after the "mouth" shot, the slug moves very fastly when trying to eat the flying Falcon... pretty weird...

- During the torture scenes in Cloud City: Han is "electrified", in a way, and Chewie has to hear a very disturbing noize (oh, real torture!... ). But for Leia? What is her torture?

- in ROTJ, there is something I've never understood, even if I've read some pretty weird explanations. Why does the heroes in the Lambda shuttle have to ask for the deactivating of the "protector shield"? I though that shield was around the Death Star, and the heroes want to land on Endor, where there's just the shield generator. Maybe Endor itself has a shield, but in that case, where is the shield generator FOR Endor?...

- Darth Vader's helmet: in ESB, in the famous scene where we see the "naked" top of Vader's head, we clearly see that he has just the helmet on his head (considering he has the mask also), but in ROTJ, Luke takes of the helmet and we see another part under it, that hides the top of Vader's head. So, what's the deal with that?

- Another thing on the whole trilogy: it's not a real trouble for me, but I have to admit that I really admire the Wookiee language knowledge of Han... Some "growls" and "groar" from Chewie, and Han understands all... Amazing!

Oops on that spelling error!

As for the AT-AT and speeders flying at them from the front, I thought of that as well, but assumed they were trying to slow them down to have more time to evacuate. (I know, pretty lame)

I also assumed Leia was tortured the same as Han, or that just Han was tortured for shooting at Vader. Chewie because, he is a wookie?

Maybe they have to deactivate the shield because it is really big and they are landing so close to it?

Here's what I've always wondered about star wars: Why in THE HELL do there have to be so many damn continuity errors?

There weren't any (or at least, very few) until the PT came along.

I know. But... this being THE BIGGEST saga of all time, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY couldn't they get a continuity editor?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!

Because continuity would only hinder Lucas's vision.

And I agree with 20th Century Mark's opinions. Their main objective was to protect the shield generator as long as possible, so they had to be in between the AT-ATs and it. And I always assumed the Death Star's shield would extend out far enough that it could be a danger to passing ships if it wasn't deactivated. That makes enough sense. The torture thing. Well, I never thought that Chewie's loud noise was supposed to be a form of torture. To be honest, I never really gave it much thought at all. The closed captions call it an alarm, so I just thought that some security measure was in process. As for Leia, well, I don't think we want to know what they did to her. ^_~

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Things I always wondered....

1. Do they have a bathroom on the Falcon?
2. Why did Irvin Kershner not seem to mind the actors pronouncing Han's first name (esp Carrie Fisher who said both versions)?
3. What were the conversations like when Han, Leia and Chewie dined with Darth Vader?
4. Why did George Lucas dub over so many of the British actors with American actors? I'm sure many of them could have used an American accent had they been asked.
5. Does Vader sleep with his mask and helmet on? If so, don't his breathing sounds keep him awake?
6. Did Luke and Leia sleep together before they found out they were related? (yuck)
George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

1. Do they have a bathroom on the Falcon? - Somewhere....
2. Why did Irvin Kershner not seem to mind the actors pronouncing Han's first name (esp Carrie Fisher who said both versions)? - HE was busy counting the zeros on his paycheck
3. What were the conversations like when Han, Leia and Chewie dined with Darth Vader? - I'm sure it was nothing but small-talk
4. Why did George Lucas dub over so many of the British actors with American actors? I'm sure many of them could have used an American accent had they been asked. - Everybody knows that British accents sound more evil than American ones
5. Does Vader sleep with his mask and helmet on? If so, don't his breathing sounds keep him awake? - Yes, he wears the mask. He also uses earplugs so he can't hear his breathing
6. Did Luke and Leia sleep together before they found out they were related? (yuck) - God, I hope not (unless I was from the south, in which case, I sure hope so)

I know that the characters are siblings, but that is one romantic picture. I love it. I could stare at that photo graph and swoon all day... *dreamy flutter of the eyes*

Reason #452 why I love ESB the most.

In honor of his recent passing, I offer you this 'what if':

[weirdrandomthought]

What if, circa ESB, the 'other' that Yoda alluded to was.... Uncle Owen! What if we found out Owen had been a Jedi, also in hiding (maybe or maybe not Ben's brother or EVEN Anakin's REAL brother) but who had had a falling out with Ben for some reason. So in the theoretical ROTJ Owen shows up at the last minute to help Luke (and the Skywalker family) overcome darkness!
