"The thought of not being with you, I can't breathe!"

That has to be one of the funniest lines in the PT. Everytime I think about it I have a good laugh. I just thought about it a minuet ago and I was drinking pop at the time and I almost bursted the pop out of my mouth and all over my keyboard and monitor when I thought about it. What other lines in the PT make you laugh?

It's soda.....not pop.=)

And IMO it's not so much the line itself but the delivery.  I hate Hayden Christensen.

It's funny because of what Anakin becomes, a man who needs a breathing resperator to keep him alive. I don't know if GL deliberatly put that line in because of its irony (I doubt he was that clever) or if he just happened to put it in the script without realizing the irony of it, I don't think he had humor in mind with that line.

OK Janskeet, please add an "e" to the end of "breath" in the title. I can't stand looking at it anymore!!! :-P LOL!

Honestly, I think "I can't breath" sounds equally as bad as "I can't breathe". In fact, it sounds slightly better. Sounds like a line out of Backstroke of the West, which makes it humorous instead of just lame.

The OT has some equally bad lines, they just aren't pivotal to the story.

Quote some of the bad lines from the original trilogy and we'll compare. :)

Here's a great line that impresses the ladies:

"I hate the sand."

I was going to go down to Tosche station to pick up some power converters!

Governer Tarkin, I recognized your foul stench as soon as I got on board

I'll think of more later

Apart from the "foul stench" line, those are more than decent in comparison to what the PT gave us. Even then, Carrie Fisher at least acted that line in a way where it was believable. I could see a Princess coming up with an insult like that.

Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with the "foul stench" line. It's a good zinger.

The other line always gets a laugh because of Mark Hamill's delivery- he sounds like a whiny kid. It's typical of something that a teenager would say to a parent, telling them that they're off to do something constructive (like go to a friend's house to study), when the parent knows damn well that they're gonna go goof off.

Agreed re: the "foul stench" remark. It's a good burn. Ditto with the Luke whining; it's well delivered and fits his character. That's one reason that I always loved Luke's character arc: he goes from a whiny farm boy to a selfless hero who's totally in control.

Personally, I always thought Anakin's character arc should've been exactly opposite. He should've started as a mature, noble, selfless, likeable character, and transform into an evil villain. Instead, we got an annoying, unrealistic little boy who transforms into a leary, creepy, whiny, overbearing, unbelievable jerk, and finally turns into the cool-as-ice villain from there.

Is it a bad thing when he's far more likeable as an evil villain than he is as a "good guy"?

Yes, you hit the nail on the head with that one. Darth Vader was a very strong villain and inspired tragic thoughts. My perfect idea of Anakin was exactly like yours. If I try to think of the Anakin we got while watching the originals it turns Darth Vader into a real whiny weakling in my perception.

I have recently entertained the idea that Palps just beat the hell out of Vader everytime he displeased him. After years of being lightninged everytime he shows mercy or does something less than perfectly, he grows cold and hard and adopts some of the same strategies as his master. I would of liked to see the prequels play up the "father and son" relationship between Palps and Anakin more. It would make the turn more believable

I love Ewan McGregor's performances in the prequels, but I have to say that he had some duds of lines.  A coworker and I are on a kick where we yell at each other:

"But haven't you noticed?!  The shields are still UP!"

Oh god, I hate how they have to do that with every single Yoda line in the prequels. in ESB it wasn't every line.

Ayup. In ESB and ROTJ, his speech impediment was a mild little idiosyncracy that added depth to his character and heightened the "wise old sage" motif. In the PT, it's just impossible to understand a thing he's saying. Every single sentence is hopelessly jumbled to the point that you sometimes have to concentrate in order to translate. Even the shortest and simplest lines are affected. "I hope, right, you are."

Unfortunately, if I even think about the prequels while watching the OT, I think of Vader as a whiney little bitch instead of the true evil villain he is.  That's probably why I don't think of the prequels much :)
