Is anybody ever going to do a transfer of the 1989 LD of ANH, the one where the picture would start crawling up the screen, underneath a letterbox band, shrinking during the movie. dubbed “Incredible Shrinking Ratio”.

just for posterity sake, it would be interesting to watch this goof in action

That's a bit of work simply for "posterity's sake". I wouldn't have a problem trying it in the future, but it's gonna have to be on the back burner for now.

That brings up a interesting question. Since the Japanese LD transfers which were used for the first domestic widescreen LD's have the letterbox riding higher on the screen to accomodate the subtitles, would zooming in on a 16:9 set lop off the top of the image?
BTW, Fox quietly corrected this goof. The jacket art is identical except for the newer "Fox Video" logo instead of "CBS/FOX"at the bottom.

Would it be possible to recreate the effect on a better source for the material.

I think that this could be an important part of SW history, and not forgotten.

"would zooming in on a 16:9 set lop off the top of the image?"

Not in Vegas. After zooming, I can adjust the picture horizontally and vertically to compensate. Hell, I could flip, rotate, and warp the picture if I wanted.

Why do this to better source material? It's possible, but tedious. (Besides, we don't want any purists accusing us of messing with the source material. )

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but I don't see the valuie in preserving this transfer, seeing as it was corrected and rereleased in '92. Any differences between that particular transfer and the DC/Faces transfer would be made using the correct version. The '89 edition was purely an error that only detracted from the viewing presentation; there wasn't anything original about it. I don't see the value in preserving the whole 124 minute error.

The only reason I see to preserve a bit of it is if you wanted to insert it into some kind of Star Wars Home Video History documentary, which I won't even think about trying until I have more resources and time.

You know, I'd like to see DVD-Rs of the Star Wars I grew up with.

That's the Pan & Scan version with the 1985 audio mix.

I'll zoom in really tight on the letterbox transfer.

Actually, I have P&S LDs of ANH and ESB (they were cheap), though I'm not sure which release they are.

future shock!

"We are always impressed with how closely fans listen to the many different video transfers we have made for the Star Wars movies over the years. It is flattering to know that, indeed, the audience is watching. Consequently, each transfer comes out differently and any changes that you see on the all-new letterboxed widescreen transfer on the Star Wars Widescreen LaserDisc set are deliberate creative decisions. We can confirm that there are no technical glitches as has been reported." - 2004 Lucasfilm on the 1989 ANHLD.
