I dunno why but this one just entices me…

^ Aye, I’d be well happy with that up on the office wall etc - though would likely spend too much time just staring at it 😃

^ both images by Christian Piccolo - https://cpiccolo.artstation.com (with a fair bit more Star Wars art)

I don’t know why I’ve never seen this before now, but McQuarrie’s Wampa design was way creepier than any of the live action versions they actually built.

^ I think that came from a book called The Illustrated Star Wars Universe from 1995 . It featured concepts for the films as well as many new paintings and Illustrations by McQuarrie and others . I think this is one of his new paintings at the time and not actual concept art from the time of ESB production …https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/758653.The_Illustrated_Star_Wars_Universe

Ah, that makes sense. I’ve seen other Wampa sketches (by Joe Johnston I think) which is much closer to the one they filmed but didn’t use. Either way though, its a really cool and creepy design, and since the face was barely shown originally its fun to see McQuarrie reimagine it.

McQuarrie did some awesome packaging art for the Micro machines playsets around the same time . I saw this one at an antique store a couple of years ago and bought it immediately , it proudly sits on the shelf above my stairs …https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m80161997129/?gclsrc=aw.ds&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=11088723978&utm_content=t0&adgroup=110108419673&network=g&device=c&merchant_id=147715357&product_id=m80161997129&product_id=696733478052&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1-m2pOeR7QIVAdvACh2DGQ2aEAkYEyABEgJy-fD_BwE

Too bad they didn’t cast Bolaji Badejo to play the wampa.

I’ve always loved the book that that’s from. Wish I had it.

It really bugs me that the temple has that much livable space on the interior, even with the Rebel additions. The design of the structure seems quite clearly to be little more than massive disks of solid stone with voids between each one supported by the sloping stone pillars. It always struck me that it was like the pyramids in this way, a structure meant as a symbol of power and awe rather than a useable base. I imagined the Rebellion made do with the space between the stone disks, with only the ceremonial room on top as part of the original livable structure. Also, the massive Rebel complex seems at odds with the small rough and ready force we see in the films.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Yeah, I think it could do without all the little rooms in the central space. It’s not what makes logical sense for a ancient temple-like building.

Well, the text does mentioned “Rebel cut corridors” so I’m guessing that all those central rooms have been carved out of the temple or added into a large open space.

Plus, if you want to dabble in EU retcons then this was a Sith temple that would have needed actual hangars, living quarters, etc. Does anyone know what the temple was meant to be before the EU in the 90’s gave it a backstory?

That would be interesting to know. I mainly base my conjectures on the McQuarrie artwork that shows monolithic stones:

Monolithic

JEDIT: I found the part in The Making of Star Wars which discusses it on page 45:

McQuarrie: “We (Lucas and McQuarrie) had quite a thorough idea of what it was like. To me it was really one of these seven wonders of the galaxy, a pile of giant disks that were so dense that you almost had the feeling that there was less gravity inside this thing. It wasn’t fully a real place.”

There’s more on page 263 when it comes to translating it to the McQuarrie art to the matte painting:

“I had done squares, almost Mayan-like. I put it together, showed it to George…and he sat there in dead silence, which means he doesn’t like something. Then he said, ‘Would it be possible to make it look more like Ralph’s?’ So I went back and repainted it to make it look exactly like Ralph’s painting.”

I assume by ‘squares’, he means that he had broken up the solid stone disks into smaller stone pieces as more of an architectural structure rather than a monumental one.

I love these surreal ideas that Lucas had before the lore became more established. Reminds me of how Yoda was originally the Force personified, or something like that. I wish they’d kept more of that going forward (though I suppose concepts like Mortis and The Bendu qualifies).

EDIT: I just posted an essay (of sorts) that cover how early SW was more abstract:

Funny how the SE shot of the temple looks less like Ralph’s concept painting than the original. But of course, that was George’s vision all along. :p
