Which is why I think the "[REDACTED] movie would have been great if it had been rated 'R'" comment* I see so much is just dumb.

Great movies are great movies, despite their ratings- not because of them.

But a great movie can be made worse by cutting out certain parts in order to achieve a lower and more marketable rating.

Possibly.

I've seen my fair share of movies that are edited for offensive content.  With few exceptions- I've never really thought that the missing content went... missing.

As in "edited for television"? Savvy filmmakers have been shooting alternate takes to cover that for years. Most movies only play on basic cable these days instead of the networks, and things are more relaxed now than in the 80's and 90's.

The worst part of an "edited for TV" movie is usually the awkwardness/readily apparent nature of the edit, not the missing content itself.  As you said, Savvy filmmakers can either make the TV edit the peer of the more extreme version- or a parody.

Great example-

ENGLISH, DO YOU SPEAK IT?

Works just as well in the original, in my opinion of course.  But the bit about the MELONFARMER definitely detracts.

This thread is now reminding me of when TPM was first in theatres and I heard that Maul was going to be cut in two. I thought we the audience would get to see the "meat" of Maul's exposed innards, that the scene was going to be as gory as gory could get in a PG movie.

But we got CG Maul coming apart like a broken action figure instead.

Honestly, I wish that we could find the original version of Darth Maul's death where he didn't break apart. It would have had a healthy amount of ambiguity and also would look less fake.

Would TPM somehow be a better movie for the inclusion of guts and gore in this scene?

I think that's the question at hand.

No. Maul guts do not balance out Jar Jar. Just like deep-fried Anakin does not balance out battle droids with high-pitched voices.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I don't believe I said Maul's guts would make the film better, just that that is what I expected to see before I first saw the movie.

To all who bought the blu-ray set : is there any chance that this scene is included ? Either as a deleted scene, or maybe even some photo stills or a part of a "making of" featurette ?

Interesting though a visible decapitation probably wouldn’t have fared well in a PG Movie. I always found it interesting that the Lost Cut had the right arm on the floor but then they changed it for the final cut… Has it ever been revealed why?

Interestingly I am looking at the editing at this moment and the footage that is in the film… Is the Walrus Decapitation version although you only see the Arm severed as an end result.

Basically Evanzan get’s swiped across the chest which also get’s Poda Baba as he falls to his knees (this is where it cut’s) The light saber blade is missing coming down behind Ponda Baba or Walrus man as I used to call him. cut to Luke then back to the head.

So apart from a missing element and a few extra frames of Walrus on his knees and the decapitation shot end result it’s all pretty much there but what they did was repeat Dr Evanzans reaction to Obi-wans strike to cut short the decapitation bit. We would not have seen his head come off only the light saber coming down behind his head while he was on his knees. Luke astonished. Head on the floor.

There is a take with Obi-wan with his sabre lowered after the fight rather than upright so this may have been the logical position after the decapitation (off screen)

Also Dr Evanzan is gripping the Walrus neck so it may have been planned that he release the dummies Head.
