The old Star Wars comics - general discussion thread — Page 2

I'm almost afraid to physically handle my old Marvels at this point, so the omnibus editions are something I should look into.

The only downside is probably the lack of period advertising and the "Star Words" letters page. I still recall the angry mail Marvel got when fans thought Han really bought the moisture farm in one issue. Those were the days! :)

What's the coloring like in the Marvel reprints? I recall Dark Horse reprinted the Star Wars adaptation a short time before their own SE versions came out, and they were recolored in an almost totally bland palette compared to the originals.

It's fantastic. I remember when these were first announced there was an article I read about the effort they put into these reprints. They were big fans of the Marvel material and wanted to do it justice. So they did their research and recreated everything as closely as they could. They even challenged people to compare them with the real thing and bet that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference other than the reprints looking brand new. They did a great job.

Ive got lots of old SW Marvel comics. Ive got #1-6, which are pretty valuable, a bunch of scattered #'s and then the very last issue, which is the most valuable. I also have:

Tales of the jedi

Dark empire I, II

some of the x-wing series

Wow, that's some haul!  What series mostly did you get?  Late 70s stuff, mid 90s stuff, or PT era stuff?

And no SW Comics thread is complete without my pitch for SW Legacy.  I had really fallen out of love with SW due to all of the SE nonsense and the PT.. And a few things brought me back.  Star Wars revisited.  Re-reading Zahn.  And this comic.  It's not perfect, but I enjoyed it at a level that I don't enjoy any other new SW.

I think Rouge Squadron was my favorite series. The Phantom Affair was my favorite out of all of them.

xhonzi, what about Dark Times? I enjoyed Legacy but felt it was a little weighed down with all the Hutt talk and Yuzhan Vong stuff. Dark Times on the other hand I can't find a single flaw with other than the stupid Vector storyline that muddied up all comics at the time. To me, Doug and Randy are the perfect combo of art and story.

I read the first six issues of Dark Times and the Vector crossover.  I can't say I was impressed.

Remember where I'm coming from: I frinkin' hate the prequels.  To the degree that something reminds me of the prequels, I just can't stand it.  I can't recall anything I got from Dark Times (apart from the general setting) that gave me that vibe, I just remeber that vibe.  I guess if you made a case that I need to look into it again...

Legacy is certainly not without its faults.  You picked on at least one of them- I found the huttese slang to be ~okay~ and it reminded me a lot of firefly... But I did roll my eyes to it from time to time.  I also felt that Legacy was always setting up and seldom paying off... and then it ended... but I enjoyed the ride while it was there.

The Vong- I never read the EU books dealing with the Vong, though I knew of them.  Had I read and hated those books, I might feel more toward the Vong the way I feel toward PTisms... but I don't, so it doesn't really bother me.

I just felt that Legacy did a good job of taking a lot of OT concepts, mixing them up, and dumping them out in a way that felt both original and familiar.

I'd recommend giving Dark Times another try with the Blue Harvest storyline. I don't want to talk too much about because I think that'd ruin it but I highly recommend it, I think you'll dig it. The only real prequelish thing in it is that they use a species that was first seen in the prequels but other than that it's very self-contained.

My favorite are the Al Williamson books printed by Russ Cochrane.

Just wish i could find scans of the color Sunday pages.  Not the redo  done by dark horse under the title classic star wars.

His star wars books are great but not as good as the art he did on Secret agent Corrigan.  On that he was almost at Alex Raymond Rip Kirby level of excellence.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Most of it is the more recent stuff, to be honest, meaning Dark Empire and later.  I don't think there was a lot of the Marvel stuff, which right now interests me more.  I've lost a lot of my former interest in the EU because of its stringent requirements and all efforts to make it fit together.  I know I've said it many times, but I like the idea of a looser canon, and I'm not offended if things don't all line up.  To me I just picture it as alternate posisbilities, and therefore the old comics are more fun.  Still, I may get into the new stuff, as Tobar (who really is largely responsible for me recent interest in the comics) has made some recommendations to me :)
