I suppose you are one of the half of the people who watched it and didn't get it. To me, it's more than essential.
Another essential movie: Midnight Cowboy. One of my favorites movies, featuring Dustin Hoffman's and Jon Voigh's best performances, in my opinion.
Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

It wasn't even nominated, I don't know why.
The problem with "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is that it featured two names on it: Jim Carrey and Charlie Kaufman. The academy hates Jim Carrey and they will never allow anything slightly related to him get an important award - he should at least have been nominated for Man on the Moon. The academy is ignoring Charlie Kaufman because he is "too smart" for Hollywood, he's considered "indie" by them, he makes movies with no explosions, no guns, no pseudo-fantastic era swordfight, with no parts for Van Diesel, and the worse of all, he makes movies for smart people. So this award (which he should have got from his past films too, specially Being John Malkovitch), to me, feels like the academy saying "yeah yeah you're the best screenwriter around, here's your award, now get lost".

2. usually the Academy Award goes to a film that does not have explosions, guns pseudo-fantastic era swordfights.
3. I do not recall a best picture winner that had Van Diesel in it.
4. Million dollar bady had none of these things and was (imho) a movie for smart people.

1. Not that they hate him, they just can't get the image of him bending over and making his ass talk out of their heads. It is difficult.
2. Nada to say
3. Almost had one with Saving Private Ryan but Shakespeare in Love won that year.
4. So far as I know, I would have to agree. Just from what I've heard as I've never seen it.
