The new look official Star Wars site is up

And it takes far too much to load. Pretty ridiculous considering that the old one was fine already.

I'm not even goiing to look. This is all they can do on the 30th?

I disagree and think it is pretty cool.

Aside from it being entirely flash based, I think it's pretty cool too. I just wonder if it's permanent or if it's only a temporary thing like when they redid it for the release of ROTS.

I hate Flash video. It takes forever to load, playback is choppy, and image quality is crap. Why did they ditch QuickTime?

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

... it's coarse, and it gets everywhere. Right?

It's not a website. It's an interactive Flash animation. And not a particularly good one, at that. It did manage to bring down Firefox, which is impressive--the build I'm using has been rock-solid so far.

By website, I mean a collection of information substantially based upon and made available by the standards promulgated by the World Wide Web Consortium, such as (X)HTML, CSS, and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. The substantive content of StarWars.com is not described by the W3C standards, it's in a proprietary media format embedded into the a web page. Going this route will cost them some users and hurt their search engine rankings, but it's their choice. I'm sure there's any number of CSS geeks who would be willing to design a standards-compliant, accessible website for them when they get tired of the Flash.

Um, ok.

What I meant was they don't seem to have converted the whole thing to flash, so either they're doing it in pieces or they've decided they 'needed' a flashier (pun intended) front end to draw people in.

Blah, blah, blah. Maybe you have a buggy extension. I've been using FireFox to view the site for 3 days straight and it hasn't brought me down. I'm on version 2.0.0.3.

The interactive front end is kind of cool. It's no worse than any other site that I've seen use it. The proprietary media format you speak of is available on every major platform that exists (Windows, OS X, Linux, and I think Solaris). Going this route won't cost them anything. The majority of their users probably use IE with the Flash plugin, which works just fine. It's not going to hurt their rankings either, at least not judging by this Google search:

fficial&client=firefox-a">http://www.google.com/search?q=star+wars&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-a

Is it me or do people just hate everything that comes out of LFL related to Star Wars now, just because? It's almost like you're only cool around here if you hate any new Star Wars stuff that's not related to the OOT. I hate the PT as much as the next OT.com reader, but I think it's getting a little ridiculous.

Yes. Aside from two Star Wars conventions in two different continents.

Watch the clone wars trailer. Though seeing it on the web doesn't really do it justice. Seeing it here at the con on the big screen and incredible surround sound (twice!) was a real treat.

What I don't like in this new flash-only website (or "interactive animation" ) is the fact that the videos are no more downloadable...
I have a Firefox plug-in that allow me to download many types of videos, including the flv files from Youtube, but it doesn't work for sw.com...

So, I have two questions for the "experts":
- What system is used here for video? Is it a "real" streaming?
- Is there any way to download those videos?

Thanks

Which videos are you referring to exactly? Just the Clone Wars trailer? I haven't tried myself, but I'm usually pretty good at pulling those things down. Let me take a look at it.

In fact, all the videos present in the flash interface, like the Clone Wars trailer, are not downloadable. I mean, in theory... It would be great if you can find a way.

I was just about to ask the same thing. I'm having a nightmare with the new site, and not being able to keep the videos on my hd will really piss me off. Maybe someone could volunteer to grab them then up them to RS?

While we're on the topic of the flash pages, it really really got me furious to see that they decided of all the thousands of pages on their site to post links to the "what has changed" articles from when the GOUT was released, especially since it's not even supposed to be on sale anymore at all and it was the 30th anniversary of just one movie not the other two and some of us have been awaiting a remaster and were hoping that would be the day it was announced. It's unbelievable but at least it's gone now that they have some CIV stuff to post.

Wow, thanks a lot!

Could it be possible to have an explanation on how you extracted this, please?

And what is an .flv file and how do I play it?

Its flash video. Google vlc player, that will play anything. It's harmless to download and is well worth it.

I used a program called Replay Media Catcher. FLV is Flash Video. You can go to media-convert.org to get it converted to whatever you want or download SUPER and run it through that.
