Modern Marvel stinks.

 No kidding.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I'm far from a comic aficionado, but I'm less than thrilled about the character and story developments with the sum of the new Marvel stuff. (To be fair, I hadn't read much of anything prior, and was hoping for something substantial and carefully-thought-out, in light of the "canon/legends" announcement that framed it.) It all feels so unlikely and forced, with no real connecting tissue with the films they are supposedly bridging. I think I'll have to treat the new EU the way I did with the old one: major adult novels are head canon, and most of anything else isn't.

If there's anything the Big Two have taught us (the Big Two being DC & Marvel, of course), it's that if you leave the same loons in charge of the loony bin, you're going to keep getting the same type of lunacy regardless of whatever new paint job they've applied to the exterior.

The same people who oversaw the EU prior to the Great EU Purge are exactly the same people who are overseeing the nuEU. They didn't care about quality control then, they don't care about it now.

I fully expect the nuEU to become as much a quagmire of crap as the old within ten years, maybe less. Hell, they'll probably re-canonize garbage like TOR just to add shit frosting to the turd cake.

I was kind of hoping that the new continuity would actually be free of blatant contradiction, but I guess I've been disappointed.

The story group screwed up with the Marvel comics contradicting Heir to the Jedi, in which Luke says he hadn't heard Ben's voice during the two years since the Death Star.

Heir to the Jedi takes place before any of the Marvel comics.

I believe that's a retcon. Heir to the Jedi features Luke talking with his girlfriend about looking back on himself two years ago as immature, and they bond over this shared experience. He was talking about how he felt right after the Battle of Yavin. Luke's character throughout the book implies to me that significant time has passed for him. Shoehorning the book into what I'm sure amounts to a few days between ANH and the comics cheats the book of its due.

I'm starting to think an overseen nuEU (now featuring unbridled canonicity) will be more frustrating than just leaving contradictions ambiguous. It's sorta like how, from what I've heard, the new Marvel movies make the world an improbable and terrifying place because New York continues to be pummeled by canonized danger every other week in one continuous narrative.

But, I will just save my mental work for novels and not pay comics further mind. I'm just not a follower of comics, and haven't enjoyed what they've put out for SW so far.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Er, NYC actually hasn't seen that much action. There was a minor skirmish in Queens with Iron Man, the Hulk fought the Abomination in Harlem and then finally there was the Battle of New York in the Avengers. Most of the Marvel films have been pretty diverse with their locations.

Next week all three series get new issues. I'll never understand comic release schedules.

It says on Wookieepedia that Heir to the Jedi was originally supposed to be the third book in the Empire and Rebellion series for the old EU. Seeing as those books are listed as taking place 2-3 years after the Battle of Yavin, it's safe to say that HTTJ was meant to fit in the same timeframe.

It really just goes to show that the guys in charge of maintaining continuity are nothing but incompetent. Perhaps their failure to keep real continuity in the old EU could be (partially) excused due to how grossly complex and convoluted the EU had become, but now -- with only a handful of comics, novels, and short stories to deal with -- there's absolutely no excuse for this.

I don't understand it, either. Hell, I think they've even changed the release dates for a few of them.

Vader being  Luke's father is also a retcon.

darklordoftech, you're correct in stating the officially sanctioned view of the order of works. According to the new canon, HTTJ is shoehorned into the timeframe before the SW comic series. On the other hand, the contents of HTTJ have their intended place at a later date, which had to be twisted to accommodate continuity concerns.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I love the cyborgs in the Vader comic. A much-needed counterpoint to the overpowered Force of the prequels and legends.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhh, they were the worst. And that "base" they're on.

Ah, yes, I forgot to mention that I'm also glad that I've chosen to disregard the Vader comic, too. Any meagre doubt I had that post-PT Vader is a completely lame character not worth reading about has been finally put to rest with this series.

I was ordering the monthly issues of Star Wars, Vader & Leia but the postage was really starting to add up so I decided just to wait for the upcoming Collected Editions which are being released later this year-

I wonder why people even bother buying individual issues anymore. You rarely get done-in-one stories in mainstream comics anymore, so you're stuck having to wait months to read a single story that you could probably get through in an hour if you had the whole thing at hand.

^meh, I just like going to the comic shop every other Wednesday. It's an enjoyable little ritual.

We know the main protagonists are going to survive, so I at least want good character developments and challanges, which is something the new comics seem to lack, though: most of the new issues are standalone stories and with no good secondary characters "mortals" (that is, may be killed) there's no challange for them, no tension whatsoever. I'm not fluent in English, so I can't explain in detail.

I'm very disappointed by the new comics: Disney look at them as no more than business.

I subscribe so I can talk about them each month (or whenever they end up coming out) with you fine people.

Personally, I just download digital copies off the 'Net once they become available. Sure, that may not be perfectly legal, but that way I don't have to feel ripped off for spending money on crappy stories that aren't worth the cover price.

The wife thing feels very Firefly to me. Anyone else seen that episode?
