Info Wanted & Help: looking for... The lost footage of 2001 — Page 2

You can't blame Stanley too much. He was concerned everything from 2001 would be reused in some low budget movie the way many costumes and props from Forbidden Planet showed up in cheese like "Queen of Outer Space". There are some well known costumes in the OT that are actually from a Ray Harryhausen film!
It's interesting how much actually escaped being trashed. It appears one of the ape heads turned up in the awful "Trog", outacting star Joan Crawford. I spotted a spacesuit backpack in a Jon Pertwee era Doctor Who episode. At least one spacesuit has survived and is being restored. Someone found the
space station miniature sitting in a vacant lot. Sadly, they were unable to rescue what was left of it.
Now, if somebody could just find Dave's spacesuit and the full size pod from 2010. Director Peter Hyams apparently has a Hal faceplate!

Some stuff that is known to have survived:

* Those red chairs on the Earth orbiting base.
* One spacesuit complete with helmet.
* The fetus model used for the star child.
* The flying pen.

I've emailed Bill Hunt of thedigitalbits to see if he can find out any information about this supposed 2001 special edition DVD to come out in 2006.

This supports what I mentioned earlier in this thread about the rumors of WB planning special editions of Kubrick's films for 2006, with 2001 no doubt being one of them.

Oh great, now that I have half of the Stanley Kubrick colection box... Although I don't own Clockwork Orange and Dr Strangelove, so I would buy those (strangelove is not owned by Warner Bros, but...)

Hi. It was nice to hear all that deleted scenes info on 2001. Thank you Ricarleite! I was wondering i anyone has actually seen any vintage TV appearances done during promotion of 2001? I'd love to get hold of those... All I managed to collect is listed below. Hopefully new DVD edition will do 2001 a justice with new remastering and extras.

Regarding the upcoming SE of 2001, Warner Home Video held a chat over at HTF on Tuesday. There are a few comments about the Kubrick SEs, but they say they're not sure about the extras yet.

It was mentioned on the HTF that all the cut material exists for 2001: A Space Odyssey on B&W color separations in 65mm (made from the original negative).

To be honest, I don't buy it that Kubrick would get rid of anything. Charlie Chaplin said the same thing and now we have hundreds and hundreds of outtakes from his films in vaults.
"I was a perfect idiot to listen to you!"
"Listen here, there ain't nothing in this world that's perfect!"

Re: Kubrick outtakes, storage, etc...

Sorry I don't have a link, but either Leon Vitali or Jan Harlan was interviewed a few years ago and discussed burning outtakes from Eyes Wide Shut, per Stanley's instructions. I can't remember if the destruction of footage from other films was mentioned.
It seems odd that Kubrick would single out EWS only, as the reason IIRC was that Kubrick only wanted his final vision of the film seen...so it would make sense that this would apply to the other films.
I'm not disputing what someoen said earlier in this thread about Harlan's quote, just relaying what I've read.

I used to follow the Kubrick NG pretty closely, and I don't recall a single thing about rare footage from 2001 being in collectors' hands. I think this would be far less likely than someone coming forward with a copy of a SW 70mm print, for instance.

I've found a site with detailed and well documented info on 2001 deleted scenes. In case you haven't seen it yet, here it is:

I read somewhere recently that all remaining unused footage from kubricks films was destroyed.
This was one of Kubricks own wishes, so looks like no more footage from any of his films will ever come to light.
If i can find the link where this was stated i will post it hear

Seeing as kubrick always had final cut and delivered the films to Warner in its finished state,i doubt theres much additional footage over at Warners.
