One of my favorite experiences was at the 70mm revival showing in the Castro Theater in San Francisco, in 2001 in fact... the crowd was literally whooping and cheering during some of the scenes. An incredible movie that is still ahead of its time.

I should've added an /s tag to make it more obvious I was being sarcastic. 2001 is the greatest hard sci-fi film of all time. Well, to be honest, it's one of the only truly hard sci-fi films, along with Gattaca, Primer, Moon, and to a lesser extent Contact.
Well I stand behind my comment none the less, this was a very boring, strange ass movie to me, but I also did not really care a whole lot for THX-1138 either, another weird boring movie, I don't hate either of them, but definitely NOT on any of my favorite lists LOL.
I would rather watch Barb Wire, DOA, Legend or Labyrinth, hell, or Bring It On.

This is exactly why. It doesn't surprise me that it was ESB vs Serenity in the end, because these have the strongest and most active fanbases online. In fact, the only reason the Serenity movie existed was BECAUSE of the online fans, just to put their strength in perspective. I'm sure ST made it pretty far up the list too because of fan community.
On the other hand, films like Planet of the Apes, 2001 and Forbidden Planet, which generally are in the top 10 sci-fi films of all time, aren't popular with grassroots fans. All this poll was is a popularity contest from the tastes of i09 users, and its no surprise that Firefly/Serenity did so well when you consider that. And again--being the runner up, ESB is definitely well loved over there, so I'm not sure what the outrage is.
2001 is boring, yes. The only thing I like is that psychopath computer.
Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch etc. are not for everyone.
I'm not the Michael Bay type of guy either. I'm more into Christopher Nolan, M. Night Shyamalan or Quentin Tarantino.
Does anyone know how the pairings were chosen? I mean "Star Trek II" vs. "The Thing" wasn't really fair, was it? Or "Wall-E" vs. "GATTACA"? And why wasn't "Pitch Black" on it? ;)
Maybe it's just personal taste. Or maybe... I saw 2001 in the theater in 1968 when I was 8 years old. I wasn't bored at all -- riveted from start to finish. Perhaps it's a function of the times?

I didn't like Serenity at all. I've seen some of Firefly and liked it but the movie was a big disappointment. It fell into the same trap that most Joss Whedon projects do, "Let's kill off a bunch of the popular characters for the heck of it!" I could accept losing one or two but he killed almost the entire cast in that movie! So to see that film (people should not count that vote as vote for the show as well) win out over the Empire Strikes Back is truly disappointing.

@ Puggo: Very much so. That's maybe one reason why Serenity won. It's pretty much just as well-acted, written and visually impressive as ESB in a lot of ways, and I think people take it as representing Firefly as a whole, so it's not that one is necessarily better or worse, it's just what is more relevant? ESB is 30 years old and not quite in the "hard" sf style IO9ers go for, while Serenity is relatively new and more in keeping with modern tastes. That said, ESB made it all the way to the finals and 2001 made it to the semi's because really good films still get appreciation by many people even when they are old, they just don't retain quite the same level as when they were newer and more stylistically (and thus experientally) relevant. Blade Runner and Terminator also made it to the semi's.
It's actually a bit of a surprise that Serenity managed to beat all these, but like I said, you have to consider the tastes of the people voting and Serenity has a really intense internet fanbase. Star Wars has similar advantages. TF.N is always reported on polls to go support. Maybe they just missed this one.

2001 gets a lot of references and homage in popular culture though. Hal did that commercial for Apple as the real 2001 rolled around. MST3K's final episode on Comedy Central was a huge homage, culminating in a giant monolith in the shape of a VHS tape of "The Worst Movie Ever Made.
The Simpsons and Futurama have done more 2001 jokes over the years than I can count.
Modern movies pay homage to it as well. From the Discovery pod lying in Watto's junkyard, to Kevin Flynn's hideout on the grid.
I must confess I'm a fan of that other space opera Joss Whedon wrote the script for.

It was a good show but some Whedon fans can be scary, man. They are super-devoted and organized.
