I really don't mean to raise a big stink about anything, especially if the intent really was life.  However, as I mentioned before, I feel very strongly pro-life, with less internal ambiguity than any other topic.  Regardless of its legality, I still find it immoral, just as I find adultery, lying, and Nazism immoral, though legal.  It's an issue I will never change my mind on I'm afraid, and I completely despise the argument that a fetus is not a person.

and you have every right to despise that argument, just as they have every right to make the argument.

I don't see how this furthers the discourse at all.  I could use this response in any debate and make absolutely no progress.  You brought up that it's illegal.

um, no I brought up the fact that it is legal.

I suppose what I said doesn't really further the discourse(I wasn't aware that every post I made had to do that).    I guess all I was trying to say was what they were doing is legally protected, no matter how much we might hate it.    I wasn't trying to offend you, darth_ender.

Forget the ethics of eating sentient-shaped confectionaries, I'd much rather discuss the politics of dancing.

I thought the gummy fetus was actually pretty funny, and kind of cute. I think it is kind of weird so many of us find it as morbid as we do. It's a fetus! We were all one once! Why is it that dead fetuses and abortion are the only things some of us can think of when we see a fetus?

When I think of a fetus I think of new life, endless possibilities, and the wonders of the reproductive process. Excited parents with pictures of sonograms in their wallets.

I don't feel that a gummy fetus is any more morbid, distasteful, or crass than a gummy baby, puppy, or any other cute or innocent gummy shaped products.

So, did you not understand my reason, or did you just not read it? We were once excited parents too. I can assure you that the ultrasound changed everything.

To be honest, I did not consider this situation Frink. I certainly did not mean any hurtful disrespect by my off the cuff comment earlier in this thread.  I like shock humor, but not at the cost of hurting people feeling in that sort of area.

I was just thinking of it as a kind of social/political sensibility issue, and forgot about the core human emotional factor that it could manifest in any of us.

Anyone who may have been offended by my earlier comment, please forgive my inconsideration.

I had never heard the term mackerel snapper before either and it turns out I am one!  Must be an American thing?

Incidently, when I first saw the image of the gummi-feotus my first reaction was that it was ment more as an extreme anti-abortion message, rather than a pro-abortion message.  That was just my first thought, without reading anything about other people's reactions or what it was apparently supposed to represent.

I never knew you had lost a child Frink.  As a parent myself, I can appreciate how devastating a thing that must be.  I'm sorry to hear this.

That being said, it's unrealistic to assume everyone should share the same reaction to a stimulus based solely one person's history with said stimulus.  My wife's father died of cancer, yet she doesn't think every comedian who makes a cancer joke is an asshole, nor does she think people who laugh at said joke are assholes.

Now it was my turn to look something up.   When I did, I discovered something very strange.  For a couple of months now, Wikipedia has been running a banner with different messages from some of their authors. They rotate every few days.  Yeah, I know - but wait, it gets even weirder.

When I pulled up the Politics Of Dancing article, I noticed a very strange similarity between the featured author in the banner and the album cover for Politics.  It looks like the same guy.  Man, they're even wearing the same shirt.

Coincidence?.......Well, yeah.  But it is kind of weird.

That's what I meant.  My bad.  And you are right, it is legally protected.  I just plan on fighting it for the rest of my life.  You're a good man, Warbler, and I know you didn't mean to offend.

And to everyone else, while I was not pleased with the candy, I want to reiterate one final time that I didn't want to turn this into an abortion debate (I'm happy to debate it, but not over candy which I simply felt was insensitively designed--meet me in politics, anyone).  I see that there are various interpretations, both for those who feel indifferent and those who were offended.  I personally feel it is wise to avoid offending people, but simultaneously we all deserve to express our feelings.  I don't much care for the candy design and my interpretation of the intended message, but frankly I think this thread as met its end for me.  Again, I will gladly and passionately debate anyone in the politics thread.

Is this some abortion topic discussion hot potato or something? It starts out in the famous person thread, jumps to a thread roughly designed for it, jumps again to another thread. Where's it going to end up next? What the "this thread is currently about...", or the Cake thread? Curious minds need to know.

(FYI I do have something to say on the matter, but need to know how long the topic will stay stable in a single thread. I don't see much of a problem keeping it going here. Politics thread is full of other stuff.)

Well, for me the candy is rather meaningless.  I feel that this thread misses what I was trying to get at and will continue to do so with the various thoughts running through it and the name of the thread itself.  Perhaps a thread on abortion would better suit your purpose.

What FF said.

My comment was originally made for the famous person thread, then I decided to post it here instead. But no, I didn't read your comment at the time of posting, but you had mentioned that situation in the past.

I do sympathize, it must be a horrible thing to go through.

Not trying to sound overly insensitive or anything, but I still don't think that has a bearing on my comment about seeing fetuses as symbolic of new life. Your situation really sucked. But a lot of ultrasounds do bring many parents a lot of joy and exciting images to share with their friends. My whole point was that the fetus, being one of the early stages in the development of brand new humans (exciting stuff!) doesn't have to be seen as a morbid symbol of death and political controversy. Your personal experience doesn't nullify my point to any degree. It is unfortunate that babies die, I've seen dead babies, but I still find babies cute.

It's all good, everyone. I know no one meant any harm. I'm still annoyed at Sean Wookie, but mostly because this isn't the first time he's posted something fetus/abortion related that I found extremely offensive.

I understand why some people might not be offended, but I can pretty much guarantee you would change your mind if you went through what I went through. You can't possibly understand how it would affect you.

not sure if it would change my mind as I am already disgusted by the image.

if you ask me, the image if that candy looks more like a dead fetus than a living one.    But maybe I'm wrong.
