The computer dilemma

As much as I've always said that I'd switch to Mac given the chance, I now face a dilemma. We've just come into a serious amount of cash and would like to upgrade our computer. We'd also like to buy a videocamera. I've looked into upgrading our PC and to do the upgrades we would need to accomplish any sort of video editing, we're looking @ ~$750.00 (New case, motherboard, processor, 250 GB HD, 1GB ram). A new Mac Mini Core Duo would cost us about $929. The mini DV camera we're looking at is $450.00. I'm torn, since the mac would come with iLife, which would mean I wouldn't need to really buy any editing software. Input from anyone? I have a pretty good idea what Bossk and DAYV are going to say, but what about everyone else?

P.S. the dollar figues above are Canadian dollars.

Congrats on the windfall.

Just get the Mini. You'll be glad you spent an extra $179 (not much in the grand scheme of things) to get what you really want. I'm enjoying my Power Mac a great deal and don't regret the purchase in any way.

Besides, with Intel Macs now able to reliably boot and run XP thanks to Boot Camp, you can switch if you're ever in the mood to do some fragging or play Solitaire. I still have a Windows box I keep around for online gaming, but once the Rev. B Intel Power Macs are out next year, I'll be kissing that PC goodbye.

I say take advantage of the opportunity you've been given to do what you've always wanted to do. Life is too short.

Can I take this thread hostage to ask just one question, that is somewhat related to the topic: when the Macs switch to x86 architecture processors, how compatible will they be with PC applications? I don't see how much they could be, as those applications use OS features, and that could be emulated but not ported... Will I really be able to kiss my PC goodbye with one of those?

If I'm gonna boot up directly into a widow, I don't want a Mac or a PC involved. I just hope she's a hot young war widow.

My sister recently switched from PC to mac and likes the Mac, except for the fact that she has to now buy a bunch of new software.

Switching to an intel mac will be the best thing you ever do, computer wise. Now that you can reliably boot directly to windows when you want, it's a no-brainer slam dunk. There are also rumors that apple is going to incorporate the ability to run windows apps natively in OS X in Leopard, the next generation release in Jan 07. Maybe, probably not, we'll see. It would be very interesting. iMovie and iDVD are GREAT for home movies and simple editing jobs. If you want to do any serious editing, you'll need to pony up for Final Cut Studio or Pro and DVD Studio Pro. But, you have to do the same on windows so there's not any difference there.

It's a very good time to be a mactel user.... come on in, the water's fine....

I remember seeing a long time ago someone use a little box with a switch on it. He would press the switch and his computer would become a Mac from a PC or vice versa.

Now, did he have 2 towers (one Mac, one PC) and just one monitor, or did he have some sort of hybrid computer?

Gateway, Dell, HP, Compaq, etc. are all the same. What really counts is what hardware you have.

So the decision has been made: I'm not upgrading... for now. We're going to pay some debt down first and play it by ear. I did buy the DV camcorder though; my kids are growing up way too fast, and I need to document their progress.
