The character of Obi Wan

I think, one of the main things about the prequel trilogy is how it fleshes out Obi Wan Kenobi. While I could go on and on, I wanted to quickly point out what brought about this thread:

While watching Star Wars, the scene in which Obi Wan has the talk with Luke in the hut about the days that would make up the prequel trilogy, you just have to have a smirk on your face the whole time he is talking. Alec Guiness, through pure luck, plays the whole thing as if he is hiding ALOT from Luke. I don't know if it was intended at the time, or just Guiness's nature. However, now that we know the way Lucas wanted the past to play out, you can almost feel Obi Wan manipulating Luke to get him to join him as he had one day hoped he would. Everything from the droid showing up, to Luke's involvement is all very "Now is the time"ish. I think it makes the scenes that much better.

Of course, I'm sure most will disagree.

I agree with you totally about Alec Guiness' performance it almost TOO perfect, it's spooky.

Being a strong believer in the will of the Force, I'm sure he thought it was much more than a coincidence to be reunited with Anakin's former droids, who are carrying a message from Anakin's daughter and pratically arrived on his doorstep with their new master - Anakin's son! If that's not a sign of divine intervention, then what is?

Furthermore, I wonder if Obi-Wan was out looking for Luke (when he saved him from the Tuskens) because he either a) sensed Luke was in danger, or b) felt the presence of Anakin currently in orbit around Tatooine in his Star Destroyer and wanted to make sure Luke was not involved.

After seeing ROTS - I also wonder if, after Luke's decision to come with him to Alderraan and the obvious need for safe transport from a trusted friend, I wonder if Obi-Wan contacted Yoda, who contacted his wookie pal Chewbacca and set up a meeting at the Mos Eisley cantina. Or was that a coincidence too?

I thought that too. Or at the very least, Obi wan knew he could find chewie in mos eisley and chewie was willing to help and introduce him to han becuase of his past relationship with the Jedi.

Actually, I've always noticed that. One doesn't quite need the prequels to pick up on it either. I always did love how Ben takes a moment before answering Luke's question about his fater. It like he's figuring out how to phrase it.

No matter what he was hiding, Obi Wan should have never decieved Luke like that.

Before I begin, let me say this: The OOT IS Star Wars to me. I love it. I don't need the prequels. However, seeing as they do exist, and the ultra super edition DVDs do exist and the OOT DVDs do not exist yada yada yada, I can appreciate Lucas' 6 part saga. I consider it a seperate entity to the originals, which I love, but I can still apprecaiate what he was trying to do how they all work together. Never thought I'd say that....
