Yeah it is distracting, and unfortunate that it´s like that from the precious laserdisc source. Just take a look at the fight scene with Obi-Wan and Vader, the whole room is basicly moving about. The walls shaking and sliding. Why this is like it is I don´t know. Maybe the film prints used for the transfers were heat/cold damaged or something.

"Maybe the film prints used for the transfers were heat/cold damaged or something."

Not damaged, just that the film itself tended to jump around during the transfer. This is actually not as unusual a scenario as it seems - it's just that not many other films come under such scrutiny.
MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They're certainly beyond any repair you're capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren't one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can't say I find that very disappointing.

It just seems to me to be quite a bit more jump than even my crappy e-bay purchased bootlegs. MeBeJedi (and other experts) - any chance you could take a look at the footage that Laserschwert has posted and let us know if that is the same amount of jump that you have seen?

I think I am going to have to see the doctor about possibly boosting my prescription because surely I must be blind.

Is this one of those "making a mountain out of a mole hill", "the other sheep went that way" sort of thing? The only real flaw I can see is a silver "flash" on Vader's helmet. I can't say I have every seen that before in any other transfers but I don't really see this "jumping" or "wavy" video like many of the others have said. I guess I can watch it again in super slow-mo to see if my tired eyes can see anything

Okay, that did it... I played the video in PowerDVD and stepped through frame by frame, then I saw it, but, that is the only way I really noticed it. If I play the video at full speed, this "jump" in the video is not really noticeable at all.

I saw a comment posted in another thread that is relevent here... something like this.... only geeks like us would notice something like that. I for one will not be stepping through my DVD "boots" frame by frame on the big screen... so no crime, no foul.

Thank you Laserschwert for posting that snippet and Zion, keep up the good work

What's with the fixation on sheep?

Ok, I just watched my boots again, and the jumpiness is definitely there. It does seem less pronounced, but the fact that it is there I'm going to assume that Zion's transfer is no worse. Zion's is definietely way better in contrast and color!

Interesting though that the official DVDs are perfectly stable.
Anybody know anything about video stabilization?

Other than the obvious fact that they used it for the DVDs, but not the LDs? You do realize that each frame was scanned individually into a computer, right? Didya think they did that for the LD?

Dudes and Dudettes, many LD transfers, and some DVD transfers, share this syndrome. Hell, sometimes it's on the print itself. Lord knows how often the image "shakes" in the theater!. For the life of me, I don't know why people are acting like it's brand new, much less a big deal. If the DVDs have perfect stabilization, then by all means, go watch those. I, for one, won't waste my time placing all 180,000 frames in the exact center to please people who can't understand that problems like these stick out when one is watching the film with their face two fucking feet away on their computer monitor.[/rant]

I know what you are saying, but if you notice this again...go walk up to the manager and tell them to adjust the tension on the film. Odds are they have one of the loops too loose.

Well, the point being, myself, zion, laserman, mverta and others are already jumping through many technical hoops to make a silk purse out of this sow's ear. We are doing quite a bit more than simply "capturing" the LD's, so people really need to rethink their nit-picks.

Furthermore the problem is, that the image is not just shifting, it's kinda bending as well.

I agree with MeBeJedi, this nit-picking over something not noticable on any of the 3 different bootlegs I have unless you look at it frame by frame 2 feet away from your monitor. I must be blind because I still dont see it, besides who watches a movie frame by frame. We are lucky we're even getting the originals on DVD anyway. Thanks to all you guys that are spending countless hours restoring these great movies. Just kick back, drink a beer, smoke'em if you got'em, chill out and enjoy the movies. Maybe thats why I dont see the jump, I'm drunk.

Well, g-force, I feel I must apologize to you. You are by no means the only person who has done this - you were just the most recent. My rant was not directed solely at you, though you did make for an awfully convenient target.

To be honest, the though crossed my mind: to what extent was this DVD release intended to take the wind from the sails of the bootleg market. It really takes a hard-core OT fan (like myself) to not buy the official DVDs for their overall vastly improved visual and audio <cough>.

My father-in-law bought the set, but then again, he buys all new DVDs. He even bought "Cradle 2 the Grave" and "The Punisher". LOL. At the very least, it gave me a chance to copy the Supplement DVD, so I could use the original crawl as a template.

Oh, I didn't take it that personally, but thanks for the apology MeBeJedi.

I'm just another frustrated fan like everyone else here, wishing we had the originals looking as good as a modern DVD.

Any updates zion?

Hey there MeBeJedi,

I read the exploits of you *morally* justified bootleggers with interest, and just want to assure you that you are not alone. I haven't bought Lucas's half assed/half completed DVD releases either! Keep up the good work!

First..

THANKS so much for your support of the fan community.....

Second... These are not "bootlegs".... These are what I like call "Archive Discs" and "Fan Edits" not bootlegs. When the term bootleg is used it is cheaping the works that have been done and impling that these are street "bootlegs" when most people hear that term they hear what roughly translates to [a knock-off or a cheap reproduction]. SO much work has gone into all these DVD's that the fans including myself have created and I think that they should be treated better then "bootlegs" -

I would like to thank Zion, MeBeJedi and everyone else who has contributed to the creation of these "Archive Sets" and all those who support this site and others like it.

I totally agree with Rik on this one... that is why I try to always refer to such work as "transfers" rather than "bootlegs". It is one thing to copy a LaserDisc and burn it to DVD, it is something completely different to run through video transfers from multiple sources in an effort to clean up the video frame by frame, adjusting for screen "bounce", rot and other media "blemishes".

George Lucas claims that it would cost him millions to create DVDs of the Original Theatrical cuts of the films. He could save himself a but load of money by bringing in some FanBoy interns, giving them access to the LucasFilm vaults and making sure they have a good supply of beer, pizza and popcorn.

Hats off to Zion, MeBeJedi and anyone with the patience and will to archive these movies knowing that they don't have the time nor the budget of LucasFilm to do so

I got an email from LFL a few days ago. Of course something along those lines popped into my head when I first saw it in my inbox, but unfortunately the email didn't have anything to do with OOT restoration.

I guess I had some pics on my site that were in violation of their Hyperspace/Insider copyright policy.
