Anywhere to keep up on news, or gossip about the archival editions coming?

I'm wanting to keep up on info about what these are gonna be like, release date, media format, etc. I'm sure the official starwars forums are only gonna tell you what they want you to know so info from them will be slow in coming out.

You know about as much as the rest of us do. This is the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars, so expect some kind of DVD release of all 6 films. Supposedly there will be changes to TPM (digital Yoda) and there will be more changes to the OT. Beyond that, no one knows all that much.

An announcement should be coming in the next few months or at Celebration 4. I predict the DVD set will be out either in May or sometime near Christmas.

Time
May be even a summer release...I may plop down 15 bucks for the new version of TPM just cause, but uness there was some super special bonus material--I'm not gonna bu that archival edition.

As far as Lucasfilm has mentioned, there is no dvd set because they have never implied or hinted that such a thing is coming. Its really just an assumption of fans because, well, its such an obvious marketing point.

There have been some confirmed chatter about a DVD set this year. It was on the Digital Bits a while back when the LEs came out. I know that's not exactly 100% accurate, but most of what comes out of there is fairly reliable information.

Besides....it's just seems natural that they would release a set of all the movies together. They haven't done that yet.

There will probably be something out this year, if for no other reason than Lucasfilm has released something every year since '04. But as far I as know, they haven't announced anything, so I think the talk about the "archival editions" is a bit premature.

I hadn't heard anything about them being dvd's. That's good news tho, cause I hate to buy a new media player to get them.

Don't speak so soon. Nobody has officially said anything about if it will be on DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray or whatever. Its been assumed that it will be DVD, because studios have been very slow about releasing things on the next-gen formats, but nothing has been promised yet. We don't even have much evidence that they will do anything this year at all.

The only evidence I have seen was on some promotional material from new LEGO sets that will be comming out in the first quarter of this year that stated 'The STAR WARS DVD set, that will be released at the 30th anniversary, will be responsible for an increased sale of the new sets. There will be a anniversary logo on all LEGO Star Wars sets.'

This was on TFN a few months ago. see here.

The source of the information is a picture here which looks genuine to me.

Expect a stunning DVD presentation of the Rose Bowl Parade, presented in hi-definition with lossless surround sound and a running commentary. Plus a 2-hour making-of documentary, complete with new cast interviews.

But don't expect the O-OT to get the same treatment.
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

I would be happy if they would release it the same way as Alien Quadrilogy - that means on every film disc 2 versions of the film - the theatrical cut + the "director's cut", both wonderfully remastered, plus a bonus disc for every movie full of making-of documentaries, scripts, photos and most important - ALL DELETED SCENES. Also some bonus disc with all classic documentaries. Perhaps maybe discs with the Holiday special, the Ewok movies and all the animated shows. But I'm afraid this will happen only in my dreams

director's cut ?? you guys dont like the SE anyway am expecting a 15 disk set which includes everything !

I don't think Mr. Trek meant the EXACT same way as Alien. Emphasis on releasing the original in pristine format alongside of the new. And a crapload of bonus material.

I'm a freaking junky for bonus material. I drooled just READING about the 14-disc superman set. I watch bonus material for movies more than the movies themselves, and I can recite the production history of lots of classics to anyone who cares to ask. I love learning about movies. But if Lucas put out a 20 disc set with a shitload of bonuses, I wouldn't care. Why? First, the prequels. Don't need them, won't pay for them, nor would have anyone else pay for them for me. Second, the new SE's, for the same reasoning as the prequels. Third, Star Wars is not what it used to be for me. I love the OT, but with all the crazy shit Lucas has pulled, its no fun anymore, and for the first time, I don't care about bonuses for it, especially with all the revised (aka fictionalized) history Lucas spits out. Even if it had a remastered, perfect edition of the OOT, I wouldn't buy it. Too much I don't want. I will not pay for the prequels or the SE, and I already vowed the 9.12 release to be the only Star Wars DVD I'd ever buy again. Lucas can just shove his big boxset up his ass.

We well be lucky to get the OOT plus a 14 disk set let alone 20 .

Yea, tell me about it.

It would be great if he jettisoned the SE entirely from the set since we already have that in the form of the '04 discs. Hey, I'm not going to say it isn't possible.
Author
Time
Yeah, but if the next set is going to be in the next-generation high-definition format, they're going to want to release the Special Editions in that format, since we don't have them in HD yet (aside from rips of the HD showings on television). And if LFL views those editions as the "definitive" editions of the films, I would think that those would be the ones they would want to ensure got the HD treatment.

Cool nick . Of course not EXACT same as Alien, but the same "philosophy" - we (the die-hard fans) want the theatrical versions, George (and a couple of "standard movie fans") prefer the new versions (the newer the better, right ? ), so why not to get BOTH versions at the same time ? And to be honest, the only think that I would really like to own from the bonus stuff are the deleted scenes, and because I want to see them, that means they will NOT be released .

Second, the new SE's, for the same reasoning as the prequels.

I don't know what you understand under "SE's", but I understand under this term the movies which I have seen in 1997 in the cinema and since then a couple of times on TV, NOT the 2004 DVDs. I don't think the 2004 DVDs will be released again, because Lucas will actually make MORE changes to the movies. If nothing else, he will change the voices of stormtroopers to the voice of the "new" Boba/Jango Fett, Lucas told it in an interview when the DVDs came out. If they decide to make more changes, I really hope that they'll fix all the 1977 errors, and of course all the 2004 errors (green lightsaber, etc.). And of course don't forget the digital Yoda in TMP, or plans to include "Yoda landing on Dagobah" on the "next edition" od ROTS (as told by Rick).

Except that there's still a format war going on. If they truly plan to release a 30th anniversary ginormous box set, they'd be best releasing it either on regular DVD or having one box set being HD and the other being regular DVD, but both have the same content. Until one format comes out a clear winner, or a player is released that can play both, they'd be taking a huge risk in releasing any of the SW movies in HD. Considering how long it took Lucas to release any of the SW movies on DVD, I'm willing to bet they don't put it on any HD formats in the near future.

Wasn't the Yoda landing just a cut scene on the ROTS DVD? I think ADM reinserted that scene on his fan edit of the movie. So if Rick is telling us they'll be rereleasing ROTS and essentially just adding the cut scenes "into the movie", I see no reason to repurchase ROTS.

Wouldn't changing the voices on the stormtroopers contradict everything about there being an Imperial Academy? I thought that stormtroopers were real people, too (i.e. not all clones).

LG Announces First Blu-ray/HD DVD Player
Source: LG Electronics, Inc.
January 7, 2007

Blending the latest technologies and offering unprecedented flexibility to consumers seeking the convenience of playing both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD high-definition content, LG Electronics (LG), a leader in consumer electronics and mobile communications, today launched the groundbreaking "Super Multi Blue" Player at the 2007 International CES® in Las Vegas.

Launching in the United States during the first quarter of 2007, this advanced dual-format high-definition disc player, LG model BH100, will be the first player on the market with the capability to play both next-generation disc formats, addressing the challenge of the current format war.

"We've developed the Super Multi Blue Player to end the confusion caused by the current competition between Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. Customers are no longer forced to choose between the two formats," said Dr. Hee Gook Lee, president and chief technology officer of LG Electronics. "As Full HD TV is already gaining ground, we are hoping that the Super Multi Blue Player will play the trigger role in expanding and advancing both Full HD TV and high- definition DVD market volume together."

LG Electronics also offers flexibility to consumers in next generation optical disc drives for personal computers. The GGW-H10N, also available in the first quarter of 2007, is compatible with both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats. The Super Multi Blue 50GB drive is compatible with Blu-ray Disc, DVD, CD read/write and HD-DVD-ROM (read), offering the most universal unit available.

"We know our customers want high-definition content for their HDTVs. We also know a format war keeps people on the sidelines," said Mike Vitelli, senior vice president of merchandising at Best Buy. "With this new dual-format player, LG is offering a viable solution to this dispute. This is the kind of customer-focused approach that Best Buy looks to bring to our customers." Warner Home Video President Ron Sanders added, "We enthusiastically welcome LG's introduction of the Super Multi Blue high-definition disc player. This is a great first step towards resolving consumer confusion and uncertainty due to the two high-definition formats. The Super Multi Blue Player will allow studios to better meet consumers' growing demand for high-definition content in both the Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats."

"By providing a high-definition player that supports both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD discs, LG is delivering a product that puts the customer first," said Randy Wick, senior vice president and general merchandise manager of consumer electronics at Circuit City Stores, Inc. "We applaud the LG customer-friendly approach, as it will serve to alleviate customers' confusion about the two formats."

Michael Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics North American Headquarters, echoed comments from Hollywood and leading retailers in support of LG's dual-format approach. "The American consumers' love affair with HDTV is now even stronger thanks to LG's marriage of Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. What's more, our player upconverts standard DVDs to 1080i resolution, providing compatibility with consumers' existing movie libraries while improving the picture quality of those discs, too."

In addition to offering Full HD 1080p picture quality from high-definition discs, the player incorporates interactive functions based on BD-Java, which allows advanced menus and functions to be displayed over the video of Blu-ray discs. And, while the same level of advanced menu interactivity is not available while playing HD DVD discs, the powerful combination of Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD audio-video playback technologies is like no other on the market.

The unit supports various A/V formats, including MPEG-2, VC-1, H.264 video, MPEG1/2 audio, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital+, DTS and DTS-HD audio, and includes multiple inputs/outputs such as HDMI out, component/composite video outputs, and optical/coaxial/discrete 5.1 channel audio outputs, among others.

The strikingly designed unit incorporates elegant and easy-to-use backlit touch sensor buttons along with an ergonomic remote control that delivers an effortless command of the next-generation home entertainment experience.

LG's Super Multi Blue Player (BH100), available to U.S. consumers during the first quarter of 2007, is expected to sell for about U.S. $1,199.

So there is a player that plays both now. Just so everyone knows.

Dont know where to go for updates but I did come across this (Not sure if it was posted before)

Its a wish list and rumored possible changes for the Archival Editions

Episode IV: A New Hope

1. The Imperial March has been added to Darth Vader's first appearance on Princess Leia's ship.
2. When Obi-Wan is talking to Luke about his father Anakin's Theme plays in the background and then it turns into the Imperial March as he talks about Vader.
3. The lightsaber effects have been redone and the frame jumps of lightsabers being turned on has been removed.
4. There's a new scene which has been shot during the filming of Episode III in which the Emperor dissolves the Senate.
5. In the Cantina, the Duros (green aliens guys) have been replaced with Neimoidians and some aliens from the prequels have been added.
6. The bleeding arm on the floor in the Cantina has been replaced with a non-bleeding arm because it's now canon that lightsabers cauterize wounds.
7. The original shooting scene between Han and Greedo has been restored.
8. Jabba the Hutt has been given a makeover and Han no longer steps on his tale.
9. In place of R2 wobbling down the stairs to the Falcon's hangar, a CG R2 navigating the stairs like he does in Attack of the Clones was added.
10. The white boxes around space ships have been removed and new CG shots have been added.
11. The scene of the Falcon being chased by the two Star Destroyers was modified. The Falcon now does spinning moves, avoiding the Star Destroyers' fire.
12. When the Death Star destroys Alderaan there's a new scene of Yoda's reaction to the disturbance in the Force that is created by all those deaths and then it cuts to Obi-Wan reacting to it as well.
13. The Dianoga has gotten a CG makeover and were are now able to see more of the creature.
14. The Death Star's paneling and computers have been slightly altered to show similar displays to those in the prequels.
15. The words "Tractor Beam" with Aurebesh lettering.
16. More stormtroopers have been added to the Death Star.
17. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for use with all the stormtroopers.
18. The Obi-Wan/Vader duel has been spruced up. It is much more epic and there is much more movement. A modified version of Duel of the Fates is being considered for the scene.
19. The Death Star plans that are taken from R2 have been updated. When the Rebels are reviewing the Death Star plans they look similar to the plans we see in Attack of the Clones.
20. The Death Star battle is much more epic with more Tie Fighters and more Rebels being blown to bits. We get to see old Naboo starfighters being used by the Rebels.
21. There's a new scene (shot during Episode III) where Darth Vader goes to Coruscant and lands his ship in the same building Count Dooku does at the end of Attack of the Clones. Except now the building is all fixed up and it is now Palpatine's palace. He meets with Palpatine to ask for forgiveness for his failure and inform him of a new potential who is strong in the Force.
22. Chewbacca now gets a medal.

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

1. The taun-tauns are now CG.
2. The battle of Hoth is much more epic. We see the Imperial ships land on Hoth and release AT-ATs. The AT-ATs have been sped up a bit. There's a ground battle between the Rebel soldiers and stormtroopers featuring new ships and vehicles.
3. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for the older Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.
4. The white boxes around space ships have been removed.
5. The slug monster is CG.
6. Ian McDiarmid has refilmed scenes as the Emperor. The conversations between Vader and Palpatine is now longer and features a few connections to the prequels.
7. Yoda's face is now animated in CG allowing more expression of emotions yet his movements remain the same. Also two deleted scenes featuring Yoda instructing Luke have been restored.
8. A new scene was shot in which the stormtroopers, after they capture Han, Leia and Chewie, bring Vader the box containing C-3PO in pieces. Vader orders the stormtroopers to bring the broken droid to Chewbacca's cell so that he can fix him.
9. The lightsaber effects have been redone in certain parts.
10. Luke's fall from Cloud City has been reshot against bluescreen using a stuntman.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

1. Jabba the Hutt is now a combination of the puppet and CG.
2. The Rancor is CG and looks disgusting as ever.
3. Yoda is CG. Yoda disappears leaving his clothes behind like Obi-Wan now.
4. The ewoks are now mostly CG and there are a lot more of them.
5. The plan is to insert the love theme Across the Stars when Luke is talking with Leia about their mother.
6. Temuera Morrison's like before is now the voice for Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.
7. In the battle of Endor there are thousands of Ewoks and they are more vicious than there midgets-in-suits counterparts. More bite the dust now.
8. White boxes around ships removed.
9. The black blotches around Palpatine's face are gone.
10. Some of the lightsaber effects have been redone. The shadows that the lightsabers made on the floor are gone.
11. During Anakin's death scene it starts with a sad rendition of the Imperial March and slowly evolves into Anakin's Theme.
12. Sebastion Shaw who played Anakin when he was unmasked has been replaced with Hayden Christenson in make-up to make him look older. Anakin has much more dialogue. He apologizes for the destruction he caused, he thanks his son for turning him back to the light, he tells his son to rebuild the Jedi and he says he loves him and his sister. Just before he dies he says, "It is finished...".
13. We see more planets celebrating at the end of the movie. We see an aged Jar Jar, who is now the leader of the Gungans, on Naboo celebrating with the people of Naboo and the Gungans. We see an old Watto, who is now unable to fly, sitting in a hover chair cheering on Tatooine. During these scenes Across the Stars plays transitioning to the victory celebration music at the Ewok tree village.
14. Anakin's spirit is now played by Hayden Christenson with make-up to make him look his age. He looks on proudly at his son Luke with the spirit of Padme by his side.

Again, these are more of a wish list than accurate information.
