The Usual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 35

The extended Luke and Leia fight has proven itself very difficult to complete so it might not end up finished.

And I’ve been having a surprisingly hard time finding good audio for Threepio because of his specific intonation in that scene.

Perhaps using Anthony Daniels’s C3PO dialogue from some of the SW Audiobooks.

No worries, all good!

Also, I’ve been thinking a lot about turning the jungle planet in TROS into Naboo and have realised how fitting and beautiful it would be if Leia were to die on her mother’s planet.

Honestly, you could achieve Ajan Kloss --> Naboo with minimal changes: Naboo forest sound effects, Naboo regrade, replace Ajan Kloss planet shot with Naboo. Things like adding Elder Heads, N-1 Starfighters and Gungans would just be a plus.

I mean, it’s like the planet name is mentioned in the film, and it already looks identical. I’d say the elder heads is what would convey this idea to the audience.

I added Theed into the distance of this shot and applied color correction in order to visually suggest the idea that Ajan Kloss is Naboo.

I can’t really find any places to add Elder heads?

Wow, that was fast! I didn’t notice it at first but that is a nice little detail!

For Elder heads, I had three ideas:

  1. Add one behind Leia in her first shot in the film.
  2. Add one near the forest edge when Rey is just staring at “Nothing.”
  3. Create a new shot to insert one in, maybe using a shot from the BTS doc.

I think Option #2 would be the best moment, since it would allow the audience to reflect a little.

Theed is too small and distant to be anything more than an easter egg. We need something obvious to clue the audience in.

The New Republic should be a liberated but fractured galaxy. The Rebel Alliance successfully freed the entire galaxy by defeating the Empire. After the defeat of the Empire, it’s unlikely the entire galaxy would willingly unite under a single government again no matter how democratic and especially without the Jedi. It was the galaxy’s unification that allowed the Empire to form in the first place.

It doesn’t look identical. Ajan Kloss is a tropical jungle. Not that you couldn’t make it Naboo, but it’s not identical.

I would say that while the environment around Theed looks more like rolling hills and plains, the landscapes associated with the Gungans does look more familiar to Ajan Kloss.

I think it’d be real great if we could subtly integrate Pryde into one of the prior films. Like Boba Fett being added to ANH; just a subtle added touch to strengthen the feeling of connectivity.

Also, there’s a moment when Rose says she’s recieveing a transmission on all channels, but they just read it out. That would be the perfect place to put Palpatine’s message.

That’s actually a brilliant idea! I believe it would benefit the continuity a lot! I’m not so sure about literally sticking him into the frame like they did with Boba Fett, but I think that a subtle name drop by Hux in TFA or TLJ would be perfect. 😄

Also, there’s a moment when Rose says she’s recieveing a transmission on all channels, but they just read it out. That would be the perfect place to put Palpatine’s message.

Good idea but someone would have to pull off some incredible audio wizardry to remove the background music from the message, in all the mockups I’ve seen with the message in them, the Emperor’s theme is just way too overpowerering.

These are great ideas, Starkiller! I think replacing Dominic’s exposition and replacing it with Palpatine’s speech would be a nice way to reuse that broadcast, if you could get it to work. And it makes more sense to hear that broadcast after Palpatine has already been revealed and is preparing to attack the galaxy, rather than the beginning of the movie.

The conclusion of Hux’s story felt rather anticlimatic to me. If you can’t replace Pryde with Hux in the final act of TROS, it would be cool to introduce Pryde earlier, maybe in TLJ.

One thing that is never explicitly mentioned in the trilogy, but seems to exist, is the divide between the older Imperial veterans and the younger, and more naive, First Order officers. We see this divide between Captain Canady and his inexperienced younger officers, as well as between Hux and his older second-in-command, Captain Peavey, who regularly seems aggravated by Hux’s nepotism.

It would be interesting if Pryde could be one of these officers that sort of looks down on Hux when he is being incompetent. I think the simplest idea would be to give Pryde one or two cameos in TLJ by having him be a commanding officer on one of the other Star Destroyers in TLJ. You could cut to Pryde while he is listening in on Poe’s “prank call” with Hux, to show him being unamused by Hux’s gullibility. Maybe you could fit in another cameo later on in the film too.

Alternatively, a part of me would really like to see Hux survive until the climax of TROS, since he has been with us since the beginning, and just reduce Pryde’s role slightly. You could try and tone down any antagonism between Hux and Pryde throughout the film, then you can cut Hux reporting to Pryde and then Pryde killing him. Later, you could replace Pryde with Hux when Pryde communicates with Palpatine’s hologram. All of those shots are static, making it easier to mask out Pryde and insert appropriate shots of Hux, if you can find them.

Pryde can still bark orders during the battle of Exegol, but presumably as Hux’s second-in-command. We could add shots of Hux on the bridge of the Star Destroyer observing the battle. He could make a random comment, like, “This where we snuff out the Resistance once and for all.” Someone could even refer to him as Supreme Leader off-screen. At the end of the battle, when Finn and Jannah turn the cannons onto the bridge, you could replace the shot of Pryde running toward the bridge windows with a shot of Hux looking exacerbated from the Battle of D’Qar (like his reaction when the Resistance jumps to hyperspace). Then when it cuts to the wide shot of the bridge exploding, we can assume the man standing at the front of the bridge is Hux, rather than Pryde.

Is it possible to save the reveal that Hux is the spy until the moment he dies, like we could have the reveal be “Tell him we’ve found our spy.” instead of “I’m the spy!”

Maybe if the idea from earlier in the thread about First Order troops turning on the Final Order could be accomplished Hux could be leading them?
Actually, maybe not.

If we’re gonna have Hux survive 'til Exegol, I’d really, really, really like to shoot the lightsaber seppuku scene. That said, it might feel strangely out of place without the subplot of him trying to use the Force. Really though, it’s a cool shot, so I’d like to see if we could incorporate it. We’d just use that unused wide shot of Kylo Ren on a star destroyer bridge, crop him out, and add in someone dressed as Hux. After that you just need to have the lightsaber visibly on display at some point in the film, and add a shot of his hand grabbing it. With the right reaction shots thrown in it should work. That said, the more I think about it, the more random and out of place it feels.

I also liked that moment in the DotF script, but it would be hard to set up Hux even having a lightsaber, as well as filming a brand new scene with him using it. That’s why I think it would be easier to replace a few shots and see him engulfed by the explosion. Since Hux is responsible for the stormtrooper program, it would be really fitting for two ex-stormtroopers be the ones that get to kill him off. There’s also an extra bit of irony in the fact that Hux was aiding the Resistance in order to undermine Kylo Ren and eventually replace him, because by helping Finn escape earlier in the film to screw over Kylo, it allowed Finn to return and kill him. I just like the idea of Hux’s spite for Kylo Ren and his own creation (the stormtroopers) being his downfall.

I’m sure this will be an idea that doesn’t appeal to everyone, but I’ve been trying to think of ways to imply that Anakin was responsible for bonding Rey and Ben together as a dyad in the Force.

I had been trying to think of a clear way to resolve the conundrum between Anakin being the “Chosen One” who was destined to bring balance to the Force, according to George, but Palpatine returning and then being taken down by Rey and Ben in the Sequel Trilogy. If Rey and Ben together are meant to represent the light and the dark coming together, a literal manifestation of balance, it would be rather appropriate for Anakin to be responsible for that connection, and potentially the one figure that has the power to create such a bond, besides the Force itself.

I also think it ties into George’s lore with the Mortis gods a little, for those of you who’ve watched the Clone Wars. The Father kept balance between the light side, the Daughter, and the dark side, the Son, which eventually fell apart. Now, Anakin restored balance between the light side, Rey, and the dark side, Ben. Palpatine mentions that a dyad in the Force had been unseen for generations, so perhaps the Daughter and the Son at one point were also a dyad in the Force.

Anyway, just thought it was a simple way to tie together the Chosen One/dyad/balance stuff. Not really sure how to illustrate that idea in the films themselves, though. Maybe through the Jedi voices? Hmm.

I love that idea, RogueLeader!

Perhaps whenever Rey and Ben are bonded for the first time there could be an echo of Anakin’s voice to imply he’s the one linking them. Not sure what lines would work though and I’m sure that wouldn’t get the message across. Maybe rearrange Snoke’s line “it was I who bridged your minds” to “it was [Skywalker] who bridged your minds”?? It could also be neat to maybe add some of those Mortis-specific sound effects when Rey and Ben touch through their bond or something.
